Thanks Brent! I looked at your build. It looks like your having fun but like all of us life is getting in the way. Don't give up. We fellow Hambers have all been through it and I for one will encourage you to persevere. It has even happened on this build a couple of times.

George- Your comment on the Impala brought back a lot of memories. The car he is talking about is the 1964 Impala SS in the background of the body shot. It has been in my family since new and was the car I learned to drive with. It is also the car that Pete, Eric, myself and others used to take down in the L. A. River for a slime slide. It is the same location they used in the movies Grease and The Terminator. What a blast especially after going to the greasy s**** called Tommy's for chili burgers. The SoCal guys can probably relate to this the most but I'm sure all parts of the country have their local food specialties.

I dropped the frame and springs off at the blaster and should be able to pick them up Friday. Then the fun begins!

  2. I was going to comment on the '64 in the background, and it was too cool to hear about your history with it. Those are great cars to begin with, and the fact that it's been in the family since new makes it even more special. So, at what access point did you guys sneak out on to the L.A. River? I tried years ago, but could never find a spot to sneak into.

And Tommy's......definitely an L.A. ins***ution. Their chili burgers are legendary. There's one over by where the wife works, and I sneak over there every once in awhile.

Are you bringing the frame to Terry's after it's blasted? If so, give me a call. It's my turn to buy lunch.

Alex- I won't be taking the frame to Terry's until after I prep the rails for paint. I'll let you know when I am going up and try to plan a dinner with Jake and Terry. Like the last time, it should be good for a few laughs.

There is a spot to get down in the river that the bus drivers used to use for training. Eric Vaughn is the one that found the spot. We also used to go down there in the '55 Chevy wagon he had. That was better. More room to get thrown around!

Just picked up the frame and parts for the E&B sedan and Pete's sedan. There was a lot of orange left from the first time it was blasted 30 years ago.

I am pretty sure it wasn't. Somewhere in the middle of this thread there is a timeline history of the ch***is and the owners after us. Pete and I bought this from Craig Wise and he owned it for over 10 years and never had it up for sale until we bought it back.
    Am I correct Craig?

    Rick,

I can se many sleep-less nights ahead of you, if you guys are going to have this car at LARS, as its only 2 weeks away.

Wish I could give you a hand to get it back together. Maybe Thursday before LARS, I should be free, until Limeworks open house.

    Stovebolt-
If I'm lucky the ch***is will be painted and ***embled by then. The main thing I have learned during this build is that it is no different than raising a family. Nothing goes as planned! I'll just keep plugging away until it's done. Feel free to contact me when your in town if you would like to stop by and see the progress in person. That goes for everyone!

    Craig-
Thanks for being such a good caretaker. This project wouldn't be happening if the ch***is had disappeared into oblivion!

I'm sure the guys my age can appreciate this. When we were members of Vintage Tin in our teens, Weedburner 40 and I had 34 5W coupes along with Mike Martinez and Craig Felbinger. Until about a year ago, we all still had them. Not bad for 40 years later. Now only 3 are left. Still not bad.

Let that be a lesson to all the young guys. I've never heard a car guy say,"I'm glad I sold that car I had when I was young". More likely to hear regrets only.

    Schools out!

  15. Yes! It's a lot different now to when we first saw the E & B tudor on the cover of Hot Rod or whatever mag it was. Man, we gully boys were young & wanted pre '48's & we dug your car !:)
As you say, life gets in the way. However, Hot- rod dude has a very nice deluxe '39 coupe (outta Modesto). My other old pal is into a '37 club coupe. I went other ways in life, but I still have my first car as a project, a '56 aussie Holden. That's O.K.
Cars like yours really helped solidify our interest, which brings us here today. Thank you!

    Dean-
I was thinking about you after I posted because I know that you recently sold your Roadster Pick-up that has been in your family for 50+ years. Finding a good home for our treasures before we exit is the right thing to do. It keeps the vultures away from the family and lets us direct our treasures to the next caretaker. If you think about it that way, it is not a bad thing to do.

I just looked at Steve Brown's link of his artwork. Take a peek. It's awesome! Thanks Steve for sharing!

Rick, you are absolutely correct. I am really glad I still have my coupe, even though it sat in storage for over 25 years while I built other cars and a business. I am in the middle of a rebuild that will make it look very similar to the way it did 40 years ago but it will be a bunch nicer. The biggest change visually will be the wheels, ETIII this time. Your recreation of the E&B sedan just reinforces the fact that we had a lot of fun when we were younger and that there is a great interest in cars that were built in our past. I'm going to miss LARS this year but I still hope to see you soon.

Hey Rick, I wore your T Shirt to the Antique Drags at Irwindale yesterday. Not only did it get a lot of comments. I figured maybe there would be some cosmic deal that would create energy, that would translate into the car getting finished quicker.
Now if guys would wear a shirt of my Blair's Anglia, I'd be back racing too.

    Dale-
Your car always had a great stance and the ETIII wheels will just enhance it.

    Don-
I was prepping the frame as you posted. Break time now. I can't do 8 hours straight any more.

Also, I'll wear your Anglia shirt! I'm always looking to upgrade my wardrobe.

Rick, I sold it 26 years ago. I would not be that stupid today!! But the car does have a good home. Just wish it was on American soil. :(

    Jim-
If I had known you were going to check out, I could have lo-balled your wife and purchased some good stuff cheap.:D Oh well I guess we're stuck with you a little longer.:) Keep in touch!
    Rick

Back to WORK on the frame. It's not the same fun now as it was then. It's not the work. The difference is my friends aren't hanging around shooting the bull like we did then. I need my friends to be flaky and hang out while I'm doing this stuff.

I don't remember anyone around when we did rear ends in the 34. Can't blame them.

wow..good point, it seems like we are working on our projects by ourselves as we get older(too many commitments..family ,etc.) but its really fun when buddies drop by to help, 3 friends came over to help lower the cameo box back on and we had a blast like to old days!
i wish i lived a bit closer so i could drop by and give you a hand, but it's a bit of a drive! lol

I wish you lived closer too! I've seen pictures of your cars and I could always use that type of talented help.
There really is nothing better than a group doing a project together. It is also great motivation when you know they are coming over and you can't get sidetracked.

Rick,,After spending the last three hours to read this entire 51 pages..I wish it were mandatory reading for all the "Young" builders of today..Maybe there would not be so many ****py R Rs being built..This is the way we built back in the 50s when I was starting in this hobby, now at 79 I cringe at the junk being built today

    wbrw32-
You are not alone in feeling that way! Making it mandatory reading would only be good for the young guys that wanted to learn something from the "old guys". That won't fit very many people today. A guy I know has a sign in his shop that says something like,"I don't care how you would have done it, this is what I wanted!". I've always learned from the older guys but some guys just feel compelled to re-invent the wheel.

Steve- I'm not that bad. I've known Jim since our teens. Met up with him for a couple of hours today. Lots of good stories to remember.

I just got off the phone with Pete. If this isn't crazy, I don't know what is!
Brent Bodily called Pete to say he was coming down to LARS. Brent is the guy that bought the sedan body. He raced it as "The Bandit". I actually have a video of it at the Fremont drags.

He is bringing us the original dash still painted orange and just sitting around for the last 30 years. I'm trading him the freshly painted dash for it. I would rather have the original one with a few scratches. Good move or not?
