Projects Attic Anglia

I found this 1949 Anglia in a garage attic about twenty miles from my home. I have done a 1948 Anglia as a father/son project with my son (I bought it for him when he was 13) and I think it will be a natural progression to now do a grandfather / grandchild project with this one. The body really is in good condition except for the raggedy lower edges and modifications inside that look like they were done with an axe. All correctable. This is to be a long term project since I have other ongoing car builds. But I have begun to search for needed parts.

My plan is to build a hot rod with an inline Ford six / C4 / 9 incher, similar to other builds I have done.

 

Uncovering more parts, loading up, and heading to a new home:

 

The rear axle is a GM product, 4.11 ratio, non-positraction, three-inch axle housing - I think it is a '55 - '64. Can anybody enlighten me as to what specifically came out of? There was a two inch metal tag bolted over the pig casting number, but I was unable to recover any markings from it. Somebody added a ten-leaf buggy spring off the rear and crude leading / trailing link mounting points.

I will be using a narrowed 9-inch, so this one will find a new home.

 

Cool find, If it were me I'd go with a hot little four banger or Ford V6 to maintain some of the leg room in the car. I've been around a couple Those with V8's and when you push the firewall back enough for engine clearance you end up sitting in the back seat which is ok for a race car but a bit of a pain in the butt for regular driving.

Very cool project, love those Anglias. If your rear end has 9 bolts around the center section it is a 55-64 Chevy, and from those numbers I believe it is a 1956. Is there a fill plug on the back of the housing, if so it could be a 57.

Leaf spring pads make it 55- 57, 58's had coils. I think Don's right about the plug making it a 57. If it's a 4.11 ring and pinion, that's a rare carrier.

 

That would be great with a V8 60 in it.

Great find! I've always had a spot for Anglias. Especially 60s gasser style. Pleas don't chop it. They look crap chopped. I took this shot at Pomona in 1964. Don't know any details but I love it.

You said you were going to use an inline six, I'm guessing the little 200" Mustang/Falcon six? Great little engine, runs like stink, fits where a lot of other engines won't.
I considered one in an O/T bugeye Sprite once.

 

Two comments...

One, was that Heritage Drive you bought it on?
Two- if no one else has spoken for it, I'd be interested in the rear end.

AWESOME find. At first thought, I was going to ask if you got it in Belleville, because it looks suspiciously like my ex girlfriends dad's car. If you tell me it was on Heritage drive, I'll slam my nuts in the toilet seat, as we lived off that street for seven years until last summer.

What a great find. I've always loved Anglia's from back in the 60's as gasser's. I'm another vote, for not chopping it.

You guys are right - it will remain unchopped. I don't like '33 Willys with a chop either. Some cars are better left as designed, height wise.

Don, Yes there is a fill plug on the backside of this carrier. It has a square nut and a sealing flange about 1.5 inches in diameter. The center section looks to be OEM as the ten fastening nuts still have the copper seals on them. I remember doing a posi 4.11 for one of these units and I had to grind away an internal rib to get the posi case to clear it.

Riley. PM me. Yes the rear end is available. I would rather not divulge any info on the previous owner as he is not in good health.

Mike Britton, I am thinking a 240 / 300 big six, like my son has in his Anglia. He stores it at my place so it will be an extremely useful visual aid in resurrecting this one.
