Do any of you guys have an opinion of who makes the best one piece fiberglass front end for a 55? We bought one for this project but the fit and finish is not that good. I would appreciate any help on our search for a good one.

Here's one from the mid 60's. I stole the picture from Rick Finch.

  21. Went racing at the annual nostalgia drags this easter, new 3,500 convertor and upped the rev limiter...found a weak link with the front universal.Need a new trans housing and HD driveshaft....a few holes in the floor but the driveshaft loop saved more damage.:DYou can see some shrapnel in a couple of the pics.

I thought some of you might like to see some fenderwell work. We have a friend from Denmark who is an old style craftsman with a torch and a hammer. His name is Kim Schults, he formed the entire lip out of flat sheet metal, then hammered and welded it to the quarter panel. Looks like the Buick trim is going to fit fine!

56 Ford pickup front axle? How do you connect the side steer spindle to the chevy cross steer?

This question comes from post 643

Not to answer for him, but a bolt on steering arm for early Fords spindles(32 -48 for example) will also bolt to the 56 F100 spindle. Same bolt spacing. Depending on your steering box location and pitman arm position (facing frt or rear), the arm could be mounted facing the rear.

There is a special right hand tie rod end that will accept the the cross steer link. It's made for installing Chevy powersteering to Ford solid axles. It's not specifically made for the "Gasser" application, but it'll work. I know Mid-Fifties and Speedy Bill sell them.

I'm using a 50 F-1 axle in my Pontiac which is basically the same as what you have and an Econoline axle , except mine is a little narrower . I ended up making my own rh tie rod for cross steer, I didn't want to buy a pair and only use 1. It's made out of some 4x4 square tubing 3/8" thick and also welded in an extra 1/8 on the bottom. I cut off the lh steering section from the tie rod. I also figured I was going to have 6-7 degrees caster and built it in so when I was done have a level steering arm. I made it as long as the factory tie rod and works great.

I have a rear steer gearbox, so thats why my steering arm is on the rear, don't copy what I have with a front steer box LOL.

One thing about the cross steer link I didn't like is I would have had too much of an angle for the drag link. It replaces the rh outer tie rod and has an extra hole. So figuring in that much of a drop can lead to bumpsteer if excessive. Plus for me I had to go to a heim joint draglink because of my pitman arm.
