I pulled the transmission out of my '50 Chevy to change the clutch and was wondering if there are any seals or gaskets or whatever, that I should replace while I have it out? Any help would be appreciated. -Keith
No seals as I recall and only 3 gaskets. Side cover, front bearing retainer and extension housing to main case.
Thanks for the replies the original 3 is going back in it as I can't afford any type of swap right now. I'll see if I can scare up the gaskets from Napa I suppose they would be the quickest. Thanks again. -Keith
You kind of need to take the transmission apart to change gaskets, so figure out how first... http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1949_53/index.htm might help.
If it's not leaking, leave it alone. If you decide to replace gaskets and can't find any new ones? Make 'em with a wheaties box and a ball peen hammer.
If you need any gaskets or parts, try Southern Gear Co. 1-800-882-4327. I' ve used them for many repairs and they always seem to have what I need. Keep the 3-speed, It's all you'll need.
5 speed swap was the best thing I ever did. I shoulda left it as a 6 banger 5 speed. I'd probably still have it.
I have a T-5 in the shop out of a race car but I wanted to stay period correct and nothing newer than '57 or so. But this is going to be my daily driver. Also, I read where the Powerglide rear is the way to go because of the gear ratio but is it impossible or not practical to just swap the 4.11 gears to something taller? I think I might just stay with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. Thanks everyone for all of the help. -Keith
I have to agree with Rocky, If it isn't leaking already don't take it apart. I would change the gear lube in it as Ole Don suggested though. I always have my wonderments when a gent asks a simple question and a half dozen guys pop out of the woodwork and suggest he spend an extra 500 bucks and month's time on his project just because it is what they would do if they had a car.
You'll need to replace the gasket at the U joint ball cover. This is a good time to replace the U joint also. If you need it, the gland nut packing can be obtained at most any plumbing supply place, look for "Oakum". If she's shifting a mite loose try to find some new shifter bushings. I like to crawl out from under a car planning to not return for a long time.
I agree with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it until it is" school of thought........ 4TTRUK Don't disturb sleeping dogs, either,......
