WOW Super job and many thanx for the thread! Would you happen to know if there was a series of these? I'm really interested in the early 50's, as all the car stuff seemed more homogenized... more crossover between styles, parts, people and racing contests. Gary
Stupendously great post, and that's from a custom guy. For someone like me without the use of his hands and finds the whole turning the pages of a book deal ludicrously difficult, having stuff like this virtually turned into an e-book is invaluable. I'm going to settle down this evening and read the whole thing and hopefully lessen my ignorance of hot rods. Thanks for taking the time and trouble. Paul
Thanks for sharing that one. It's a lot earlier than any I have. That one was part of a series that came out about once a year up into the 60's at least. I see one continuing thing though out the pages and that is very shiny paint on the rods and customs except for some of the obviously built only to race at the lakes cars. Shiny paint was very in in that time period.
Thanks again Jimmy, Page 52 The Mac (Shutt) Schutt roadster, is my car before Bert Mouron restyled it in 1952. Same car in my avatar.
Still have my copy that I had to buy on a "time payment plan' back in '51 when I was 13. I paid $ .48 down and the balance a week or so later. Little did I know at that time that I would eventually get to know the guy who built the cover car: Bill Waddill from Flint, MI. Interestingly, the car was never purple (it was black but the photo was printed as purple for impact.) and Bill was not pictured in the car. Seems they were at a show and when it was photo time, Bill was momentarily absent so Ken posed in the car. There were Ill feelings for a long time afterward. Sadly, the car, which was pretty far ahead of the curve at the time with its raised rear wheel wells to accomodate the channel job, was ultimately bought by a restorer who undid everything Bill had done to car. Somewhere it exists as a stock '32 roadster.
You know Dale, I just found this picture of Bill Waddill roadster on the web yesterday. And never realized it was the cover car on this trend book 102. I thought man thats neat. I wonder who it belonged to. Then Jimmy posts this thread, and you chime in with the rest of the story. You've gotta love the hamb....
One of my favorite magazines I own. Thanks for taking the time to scan them all. We just posted Monte's coupe (p.68) on our support shirts. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=709449
