Oh wise ones, elighten me,or humor me some. The Q for today is when should I install my brightwork? IE- trim, tail lights,emblems.... After a fresh paint job. History= deltron 2000. 3 coats base/3coats clear. Clear sanded w/ 2000=smooth,3 more coats clear. Wetsanded and cured for a week before re-applying last clear coat.Wetsanded and buffed.=Came out CHERRY. Seen a lot of soft paint, well,I guess wasn't "cured",and anything bolted to it left a mark (dimple, what have you) in the paint if the part(s) were removed. I don't wan't to possibly sacrifice having to remove something for any reason once I install it. Time is on my side, although I will be VERY anxious to see the finnished product. Not my first rodeo, and am not impatient. Any time frame on this? All paint was/will be sprayed with the same temp on any given day=half is metallic which doesn't matter, but curring is my concern. It's a **** shoot....I'll wait a month if I have to,but after 6 years, what the hell.....Thanks-Kid
Depends on a lot of factors. How much and what type of primers is a big one. How the parts attach and surface contact area. The old way was to see if you could leave a mark with your thumbnail. I still use that. And don't over tighten attachments.
Ambiant air...the "not approved booth". Sprayed in the am-60-65 degrees.A lot warmer in the afternoon,so curing should be happening. Will wait for final sand /buff depending on shrinkage(George Costanza). So far so good. IDK.....I know some shops-NOT CAR GUYS just paint, wait a day,and throw stuff back on. I've let cars/paint "vent" a week or two before a buff...But it's been 20+ years since i've had a nice /new paint job. This will probably be my last "NICE" car=painted and shiny,so I want to do it right once.
Primer is PPG NCP271 and it wasn't cheap concidering all altenatives. Car is a 50 MERC with ALL stainless going back on. I'm not a painter although i've painted a car before. I can see why the primer is good stuff..... Clear is PPG DCU2012. I didn't wan't to skimp, and with the current results,I can see why. After what seems an eternity, the less I can jack it up,and I mean re-***embly,the better!
I would wait 4 weeks. I would also highly recommend that you are very careful when putting the trim on. What I mean by that is that almost NOTHING needs to be torqued down. Just carefully snug things up very gently. You can go back over later and snug it up some more, but trust me, you can ruin things very easily. Looking forward to pics!
