I have been lurking around here for some time. I live in the Phoenix AZ area. Originally from NJ. I love old school rods and have traveled as far as Mitchell SD for a good show. I have gone to Rat Fink Reunion in Manti Ut and Acton CA. Bo Huffs gigs in UT. But i just cant seem to find anything close to that in AZ. I am getting tired of going to the cruise nites and seeing the same old trailer queens and muscle cars. Yes, they are cool, but i am talking about OLD SCHOOL HOT RODS, , HOME BUILT CARS, TRUCKS. Where are they? Mark
Hey Mark,i guess you didnt read the rules....sorry bud NO RAT RODS here...not my rules, but still the rules...
Mark I don't know of any early style shows in AZ. I don't do shows anymore anyway. But maybe one of the AZ fellas will chime in. I am thinking that your best bet if you want to see a traditional rod is to look in your driveway. if there is not one there I suppose you will need to get into the garage and make one appear. Not trying to be mean here just honest.
I would love to build something. but where I live the "two" car garage is barely big enough for my two motorcycles. and a tool box. I do vow some day to build something again. I miss having a hot rod. But thanks for the info.
We have been working off and on here in the valley to get a Billetproof type show going, but the economy kinda put a kibosh on that temporarily. The Nostalgia drags that happen three times a year up at Speedworld might be more your speed, and there is a Rock-a Billy weekender sponsered by Five and Diner in Feb. at Firebird. Every friday and Saturday night there are about 10-15 "cruise nights" that I can think of around town. We have a small revival going on Saturday nights on central, too. But, ya gotta remember, it's summer time, it's 113 out as I type this. We're basically shut down until about October. If by "old school" type cars (gwad I hate that term!) you mean Rat Rods, I don't know where to tell you to look, 'cause I avoid that stuff like the plague. I do traditional hot rods...
yea good reason to quote someone when you remind them of something. But you did the right thing and I didn't have to bring it up because of that.
You're welcome. He at least got the R word figured out. Now I am off to the driveway to work on my roller as my garage and ba*****t are full of other projects.
Hey Mark... Chip (need louvers ?) already summed it up pretty well. It's the off-season here for a few months, but cruise-nights are your best bet for us hokey home-built types to get out and gaze at each other's junk. It's my local spot so I may be biased, but 35th Ave and Northern usually has a decent 25+ car turnout most Friday nights, and I've heard good things about 59th Ave and Bell...
Peoples definition of the RR varies across the nation. Even looking in some of the albums from people posting on this very thread, their unfinished car would be considered the dreaded RR around here. I too hate the pieced together hunk of **** that will eventually kill the wrong person and ruin rodding as we know it, but the widely used term doesn't always mean the same to everyone. A lot of our HAMB brothers are sensitive to the words probably due to the same reason I dislike these "cars/trucks" but sometime take it overboard.
the best traditional car show is right here at your fingertips...thousands of shows posted with millions of pictures...and you can watch it in your undies...
I know its off season here for shows. Way too hot. That is why i ride up north every weekend. Old school.....pre 70's . Mercs, chopped tops, cool caddoos, old cars hot rodded up. the 59th and bell seems to be the same cars each week, with way to clicky people. I have been going to all the incarnations of that show for the past 15 years. Well I will just have enjoy the show in Utah in two weeks Bo Huff is doing. It should keep me happy for a while. And lots and tons of cool pics here.
just outta curiousity do all you AZ guys have central air in your garages? or do you wait until it gets dark to work on your stuff i have a box fan hung up in front of a window in my garage but even in ohios high humidity heat it dont do much good when the temps are in the 90's so i seriuosly doubt it would p*** out there
Its a dry heat, like and easy bake oven.....j/k. we have swamp coolers or lots of fans, or real early morning.
Hell no! We're just tough people out here! I get out in my shop about 6-6:30 AM everyday and work until about 12:00. It's usually about five degrees higher in the shop by that time than outside, unless I'm running my louver press or welding. Then I have seen temps in the shop as high as 130! Sometimes I try to work after dark if I have something pressing going on, but it isn't like other parts of the country where it cools down imediatly when the sun goes down. From now until about mid September, it will barely dip below 100 even at say 4:00 AM or so. I have to admit, when I first traveled to your part of the country and someone told me I need a "summer jacket" for the evenings, I laughed until my nuts hurt!! Never, ever had heard of such a thing! Found out later why!
I agree with Porkn******!! That's exactly what I was doing today....working on my "old school hot rod"!! Quite cool in Ohio today with a nice breeze and low humidity. 32 Spitfire http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=502413&highlight=32+spitfire
Well I just came in for a drink and to look at a roast I got in the oven (yea I know I'm a sissy). Its only 90 right now, but we have an ozone alert, which a local police officer just reminded me of. I think he was concerned for my health? Naw just nosey. I feel for you fellas that live were it gets hot. I have lived like that and it just sin't as much fun as its all cracked up to be.
Its funny you should say this, I just bought a recently released book ***led Rat Rods Roddings Imperfect Stepchildren and low and behold not only a H.A.M.B. tag on the firewall of the second car featured but the H.A.M.B. is mentioned several times through out the book. Ha Ha Ha Ha
I drove over to LA last September, took in the long beach autorama. Plenty of nice cars there. It is slim pickings in Arizona for some reason. Last summer me and three other guys got together a few times in the summer at night in our old cars. That's all the guys I could round up in a city of about 50,000 people.
That is why we don't use the word or encourage the habit. We don't want to be thrown in with them. I'll take quality over quan***y anytime.
I am new to the Phoenix area, but I would have to agree AZ is very light on anything that could be remotely considered traditional car show. Maybe it is because the California shows are so close???? Anyhow once it cools down I would support a traditional car show, lots of nice cars in the PHX area. Tex
