In honor of Barry Lobeck, picture thread

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kelly Burns, Jan 6, 2012.

  1. In defense of him he is a fine builder with many talents and cars under his belt. To remember a person you have to take the faults with the attributes.

Barry's flamed '40, and first '32 roadster were very influential cars to me. I was always treated very well by his company, and am glad I had the opportunity to meet and talk to him on several occasions. RIP Barry.

No, the delivery I was talking about was a deuce hiboy. The one you posted is a 28-29 with fenders. Both beautiful of course.

I seem to remember seeing it at the last NSRA show in Detroit, before they moved the nat's north to Kalamazoo. Must have been 1985?

Kind of ironic huh? Anyway he built some bad ass cars. How about that brown '34 Cabriolet with '37 truck grille?

Met Barry a few times and was always a good guy, A buddy of mine (Steve Callis) bought a unfinished 32 Ford 3 window coupe from him when he was still building cars in Dayton in the late 70s. I fell in love with that car, it had the perfect stance. I been addicted to cars every since. Those where some good times, Barry is gone (RIP) and Steve has moved to Sevierville Tn and now works for Lokar.

Anyone got pictures of the 32 Sedan Delivery that Barry built after he had Paul Beck do the body?

  10. You refering to this one???

I also included a pic of the Roadster that he sold to the guy in Texas on the day it was shipped. The fella in the pasanger seat is the owner of the Cabriolet. A cold ride but with a smile.

Barry was quick witted anf always good for a laugh. As far as taking credit he was always quick to point out the talent of the guys inthe shop anytime he gave a tour. Coverage in magazines that give credit to Barry for builds don't always tell the sotry as relayed to the writer.....

I have some photos of the delivery if I can locate them. The car ended up in LA in the 90's but I lost track of it. Lombardo (CSR) had Paul Beck do a delivery for him also which I drove for a while. Paul does great work as does Barry's shop. I will scan the photos later today.

Ron Johnson called and said he had pictures of the delivery in it's new almost completed version (Black) but that the owner passed before it was finished.

I had the privledge of meeting Barry. I drive for Roadway and we used to pick up the frame rails from his Oakwood Village shop, Just a Hobby. He walked me through his shop, he was a personable man, I then bought items for my car off him, he made it appoint to say hi as did I. He didnt have to I am a no buddy.

Good guy and a class act. To many times we cant say that about people, but I can with Barry.

these cars are not Traditional. They are street rods so what are they doing on the HAMB?

  19. "Traditional" is relative.

    Lobeck nailed it every time.

You are so right and should apply for the moderators job. Good for you.
I've removed the picture which offended you. It's people like you jc that make the site what it is today!
When you are looking at the "traditional cars" with billet accessories, electric fans, and air ride suspensions at least Barry wasn't a sheep following the heard. He started his own tradition "Real Hot Rods" and drove the crap out of them.

    Logged out.

I've always liked the look of the highboys he put out since the first one showed up in a magazine spread. The cars out of that shop always seem to look well designed, well detailed and well finished but don't have the "overdone" look that some other builders cars seem to have.

maybe not "traditional" by strict HAMB guidelines but traditional in that the look maintains the all hotrod no nonsense vibe that we love from the rods from the 30's. 40's and 50's.

    obviously Gray liked it :)

Thank you, pewsplace. That's the one. Defines the look for me.

  24. My dad latched on to the Lobeck look many years ago and I helped him build some nice cars in that style.

It's not a pure traditional look, and I actually don't care for it too much myself. I think it's overdone and too "streetroddish" for my tastes.

That having been said, I respect the look and, and like I said, I've assisted on several "Lobeckian" builds.

I never knew the man, met him once, seemed nice enough. All I know is, the man had the eye. No if's, ands, or buts about it. There IS something in the Ohio water...probably out of a pipeline directly from Southern California.

I met Barry at the first NSRA Nats that I attended. I was 22 years old and had just finished my first build. Barry came up and talked with me for a good length of time and gave nothing but compliments about the car. He always had time to answer my questions and helped me a lot. I am fortunate to have known Barry and to be able to call him a friend.

I don’t know what parts of a build Barry could or couldn’t do, but he sure knew how to get the look!!

I can tell part of this story on Barry but not all of it. The last time I got to spend any time with Barry we were in Detroit and this guy walks up and starts carrying on about how he has been looking all over him. The guys is carrying a huge plastic bag and dumps the contents on the table in front of Barry asking him if he could autograph his collection. It was full of George Barris collectables. I hit the floor laughing. Barry said “Dude I’m not f***** George Barris” and he looks at me and says if you tell anyone I’ll kill you. I already had my phone out before the guy could pick his items up and get away from Barry.

I remember being in Pleasanton in about 91 or 2,checking out the rides, when Barry comes walking up to me in a fast pace and says"Dude you gotta come see this car!" he was almost shakin with excitement. we walked over to Rodzy. "Man check this out , and Look at this...Did you see this? Barry was so worked up on the quality of this car he couldn't contain himself.Talk about a true enthusiast. He didn't know me from Adam,But he had to share it with someone. Our paths crossed many times after that, and he always treated me like a long lost friend.Barry= Much Respect. Everyone of the pictures Kelly Burns posted on here were taken off my hub garage acting like they were his along with others he didnt take. Barry was friends with my parents since grade school and came to see my Mom at the hospital the day I was born, and oh yea I happen to be married to his daughter... not cool

No disrespect Ronnie, but I went back and re-read all of the post in this thread a lot of respect is being shown for your father-in-law, beginning with the very first post by Mr Burns. (who I don't think meant any disrespect, no matter how he got the pics)

Please keep the good vibe going, respect the board and do a proper intro. Maybe you have some really good old build pics somewhere that can keep this going (of course you can copyright them first, if need be)
