FLATCAD RACING Bonneville 2011 Build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 38FLATTIE, Jul 27, 2010.

  1. Uh Buddy you might want to rethink the all thread as it will flex and move about causing it to crack at the mounting points you are just using it for set up purposes right???

Carl, initially, the all-thread was just for setup purposes. After thinking about it, I decided to leave it.

The setup has to be removable, in order to get the engine out of the car. The runs are short, so we can inspect the all-thread after every run, and replace as needed. The oil accumulator mount is currently 'tacked' to the shock towers. It will end up being bolted solid, to the shock towers.

I am, however, open to suggestions and/or alternative solutions.

  3. Uh think I would weld nuts to the plate surfaces and use some tubing with small plates welded on both ends and holes to correspond to the welded nuts, that way you only have to remove the bolts to take everything apart and don't have to worry about nuts and lockwashers all over the ground.....just a thought...... or weld the nuts on the bottoms so the bolts all go thought the top and won't just drop out.............

  4. I'm going to throw out some comments -- even though I can't really see the whole setup, but I have a few fabrication and strength worries (imagine that!)

I think the main/lower mounting plate (below the accumulator - the one that is tacked onto the shock towers) will need a much more solid mount. If it needs to be removed, then you can weld some 1/4" steel plate to the tops of the towers and then bolt the main plate to each 1/4" steel plate on each side. If things aren't really tied down, then you have all the weight of the fuel tank on top of those skinny rods - I doubt that will pass tech. Imagine the car rolling over and the tank assembly coming loose . . . fuel fire waiting to happen in my eyes.

    Just commenting from afar!

  5. Buddy, Thanks a bunch for letting me borrow your trailer to rescue my brother.

Now that I've recovered from the 14 hour drive:(....

I might have a better solution for you, that still bolts together.

Use angle for the vertical members (1/8" or 3/16" 1.5" should do)

Where the allthread goes through the plates and crossmembers, use 2" lenghs of the same angle and a bunch of bolts, we could stiffen that up a bunch.
Hell, even a diagonal across the front would be easy.

I'll be over tonight to help. (and find that short on the trailer LOL)

Buddy, I am with BoredandStroked on this one.
I've been sitting back and observing for a while now, but felt the need to cast a vote on these mounts as well.
Best take a second look at them, maybe get a bracket guy to fab some heavy sheet metal for extra lateral bracing with weld in nuts etc.

Lastly, it has been on my mind for a while now regarding your front axle.
This axle must be carrying a large amount of weight now and going by stuff being mentioned on the HAMB in other threads, maybe it would be worth pulling the darn thing out and getting it xrayed or similar to insure its structural integrity.

What brand of axle is it and is it cast or forged???

I dont mean to sound like your Mom, but at least give it a second thought since you have come so far.

Well here lies our logistical issues showing its ugly nose.. If there was a way to get the car to me for the next week while you are at work I could fab up the frame work and finish up the idler.. Buddy When do you fly back to work ? Maybe some one could drive 1/2 way and I will meet them ?

Don, That's a very generous offer, but unfortunately it won't work.

I fly out Wednesday for Pennsylvania. Thommyknocker is coming over tonight to help with a few details, then we are loading the car on the trailer. Tomorrow, it goes to Pinkees for a new super-duper bellypan, for comp coupe class.

Thom and I spoke at lunch, and we have a bolt together plan for the framework, since it received such glowing reviews! Lol!

I'll have to address the framework and idler when I return home in a couple of weeks.

Tim, I'm looking forward to it!

  11. If you don't have time to make stronger brackets, sleeve the allthread with some thinwall tubing. I sure wouldn't want the rods to flex or break and slam the whole thing into the front of the motor. Getting close....good luck!

Ok guys. I have the 2.40 QC gears (21/36 teeth).

    We need either 2.8 (17/25), 2.79 (21/31), or 2.75 (22/33)

    and 2.54 (16/26) or 2.53 (19/31) These are the 10 spline gears.

Anyone on the team have any of these?

Anyone else have them that they want to sell or loan? I'm in cheap mode!

Don, as usual, that piece looks first class! That should solve the belt issue for sure!

Looking forward to catching up with your group next month!

Hey buddy i think i have some 2:79 quickchange gears ill check tomorrow

  23. Hey Don:

I like that approach - just one big chunk of steel . . will be a lot stronger than having an aluminum housing with a steel shaft!

    Nice work!

  24. Yeah - whats up with that . . . you sneaky bastard you! :)

Time flyes, saw that there is just a litle over 2 weeks to Bonneville:)
We will cross our fingers and hope the Flatcad really flyes over the salt:)
At that moment we are hopefully setting a kind of record with the Sidewinder in Sweden:)

    Hi Carl

Wow I was hoping you were going. I will be picking up my new toy on the salt and may need your help,,,, It is 1960s 130" digger , Full roller no motor
I would love for you to see it and give me your opinion.. But I guess you really don't live far from me so may be we can get together after the salt.

As for Buddy He has been called for a few more days at work and he has been backed up. Dale is on Vacation fishing and drinking ( not sure what one is first fishing or drinking ) . Buddy, Dale and I have been emailing back and forth on the list of supplies so I will have everything we need in the trailer . Our plan on being on the salt on the 9th. and spending time buttoning up some loose ends and down the track we go !!!!
