This is my first hot rod project, a 54' Merc Monterey 2D. It's got sweet power-seats from a 56' Packard, a 350/400 GM Performance crate engine and a few other odds and ends. The license plate reads "FRNKSTN", so hence the Frankenstein theme. I have always had a love for the old black and white Universal Studio monster movies; and Frankenstein seemed to be a perfect theme for the ol' Merc.

I contacted three different artists in my area to do some airbrush work in the interior of the car... none replied... guess they is too busy for cash money.

So I decided to take the project on myself. Using a decoupage' technique I aged and burned parchment-type paper that I printed with exerpts from Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN and a few quotes from the 1931 movie. I then printed select scenes from the movie and applied both to the driver's door panel. The panel was then sealed with waterproof/UV acrylic spray.

I intend to do the same with the passenger's door, however using a Bride of Frankensten theme for my wife.

Just wanted to get some comments, thoughts or ideas from ya all.

    Thanks in advance,
    Darren

Screw it, I dig it! Not super stoked about the wheels though, I think that car deserves a bit better in that department. BUT, I understand using waht you got too!

It's a nice car, but I'm not loving the artwork, or that type of thing regardless of the subject.

I have to agree. I love "Frankie" and have even done several shift knobs dedicated to the Monster but just do a nice Roll & pleat interior, you won't regret it later and it won't discourage future potential buyers if you decide ever to sell.

  6. Who care's, it's your car...makes a change from old decals all over the inside door panel's.

Not my style, the door panels are kinda neat in an art-car kinda way but they're ruined by the plastic speaker covers. I think it'd have a better effect if you had a more vintage looking way to cover or hide the speakers.

I say if you like it, go for it!

its just inner door panels, nothing that cant be re-done later down the road if you change your mind or decide it makes it hard to sell.

I like many theme cars. I personally would lean toward a fabric with a smaller picture, in other words it looks like normal plaid from a distance, but when you get up close you can see the monster heads (or whatever)

    Nice car!

Get real, the '54 Merc is one of the classiest Merc's ever made. Give it all the class it deserves, not cartoons.

First and formost, its your car do what you want. Second I think you did a good job with it, it looks well done, very artie. Third Squablow has a good point about the speaker covers.

IMO people just open themselves up to a beating when you post stuff like "what do you think about my (insert anything non trad or a little out there here)". If you like it (and don't plan to sell it) do what YOU think is cool and to hell with what everyone else thinks.

If ya wanta go out with a bang.
Find 2 huge bolts,I mean like Big as your legs and put one on each door like Frankie has on his neck.
You will have to cut a hole in each door but.

I can handle a beatin'! I realize most of the motorheadz here are true to the original beauty of a car... some find it sacreligous to alter the look and appeal of stock. No problem man. That's what cars, bikes, hot rodz, rat rodz are all about. Hell if we all like the same thing we would be one boring group!

I agree about the speaker cover, that bugz me too... I am looking at "perfing" the material and hiding speaker behind the panel.

The door panels took less than 5 minutes each to cut out and I have an extra blank for each door. So if I wuz to resell and the buyer was a Frankie hater, it would be easy to upholster with a traditional look.

Keep'em coming... duck, jab, jab, duck...

I like it. I did some Jack Kirby door panels on a truck I did before that magazine came out but love the use of this stuff because it is just fun. Run with it because in the end it is yours so do what makes you happy.
