readin the thread about the bottom of 32 grille shells and what happened to the ones that were cut off got me to thinkin. what did we take off and scrap, and wished we had back. i.e. 32-34 truck doors, front seat for 55-57 chevys, oil bath breathers,(well the housing anyway). fenders ect. be interrested to see what some of the more mature HAMB members can come up with.
i called myself doing a search so if this has already been discussed, lock er down.

That list is too damned long for me to even think about writing down.

  4. There ya go Bruce, stirrin' it up again :D

Stock 4 speed shifters(I hope Mr Hurst got rich :))
Back in the 60s I thought front bumpers for tri-5 Chevys were an option.

and....Most graphic for me, 63-7 Corvette front bumpers.

my older brother used to tell me in the 60's and 70's he and his buddies pulled bumper guards and trim off cars all the time and just threw it all away.
he would tease my other brother who was into lowriders and wanted all that chrome.
I picked up an old chevy years ago with all the extras on it, an old east L.A. lowrider and I shaved a lot of the trim, bumper guards and sun visor, I took it all to a swapmeet and got about 1/3 of my original purchase price back.

I am sure the landfills are full of treasures.

I was just thinking about the 59 chevy pickup truck seat and fleetside rear bumper that I took to the dump in the late 70s.

And all those volvo 544 parts...makes it tough to restore the car 30 years later.

Off topic, but the two seat tracks that I carelessly tossed away back in April for the pair of super early Porsche sport seats that I forgot I had in the attic. Found them early last month, vacuumed them, put them on e-bay and sold for 3000.00! would have been 3500.00 with those two dumb pieces of metal...

I don't even want to talk about it! My computer doesn't have enough memory to make a list!
Still, it's amazing all the junk I still have that no one wants till I scrap it someday. I also thought 55-57 Chevy seats, steering wheels, air cleaners were just junk.

Think about all the old Corvette Fuel Injection units discarded because people didn't know how to keep them running and they put carbs on the engines.
I personally gave away a lot of parts off of my 32 coupe when I changed stuff like the firewall, front suspension, steering. No telling how many thousands of fenders were discarded when hot rods were built.
I once thought about hoarding all the old VW fenders when the dune buggy fad was strong but I didn't have the storage space.

  11. 32 ford front fenders.
One of them had a spare tire well in it, figured nobody would want them anyway....

In defense of our short sightedness, who in their right mind back then would think that old junk would have ever been as valuable as it is today?

  16. Linguini and clams. I think I may have had too much to drink once and tossed linguini and clams. Really wish I hadn't done that.

Acquired an Edelbrock X-C8 cross-ram manifold with linkage and twin 450 Holleys from a guy in exchange for some random junk in my garage. Sold it a few months later (back in 1997) for $175 at a swap meet. Thought I did good, until I saw an identical setup at Goodguys Columbus last weekend for $900. I instantly felt sick.

After I was diagnosed with cancer, I came home and started loading stuff in my truck and took it to the scrap metal yard - fenders, axles, lots of stuff, good stuff. I was sure I was going to die and I wanted to make it as easy for my wife as I could.

Looking back, I guess I was just in shock and not thinking straight. I came through the bout with cancer OK, but I've often wished I had this or that back which was tossed, especially when I go to buy replacements.

  22. No a dumbass who tossed cherry early GTO doors to the scrapper for under .10/lb Criminal I say!!

  23. Watched my Dad cut up and toss away an old hot rod frame from his car. Worst part is he told me I could have it. Now I realize, I could have used it, straighted it, and fixed the boogered welds and replicated his Coupe in the earlier years. DUMB I was...maybe still am.

Hey, I had one of those once! To this day I'm convinced that red heads are still just one ounce crazier than even Asian women....

Tossed the entire bed and rear fenders from my '38 1/2 ton. Sure would be nice to have that around right about now. Also, a lot of little random stuff from builds that you think you won't need, and then have to buy again later on. My cardinal rule now is to not toss anything until the build is done (unless someone is willing to pay the right price for it).

So many things and cars that I kinda get sick just thinking of all the stuff I've gotten rid of or scrapped over the years. :( I can't begin to count how many old cars I owned from the time I was 11 until I was in my 30's, or how many Willys or Model A's I passed up in the 70's for around $ 200. I cut so many Fords, Dodges, Crosleys, Studebakers, etc etc up when I was in my teens that the local scrapper had me on speed dial. :(

We were SO dumb about not looking at the future back then.

    Don
