The AutoCross wasn't intended to replace the drags. Lots of people like the AutoCross.

Drags though, are really tough to put on at the scale Goodguys did them and be able to keep them safe and fair. Pretty much all of us that work there are drag fans, especially the President, and would love to see them come back.

Not being spectator friendly would be my guess. It would be really cool if something could work though.

  7. Sooooo.....

Now they're gonna allow ricers and tuners in?!?!

The next thing you know everybody involved with the event will be wearing uniforms made in China.

    1. I don't know. I think we did shoot it though.

    2. Because we'd sell out of every issue before everyone got one.

    3. Because they're awesome!

    4. No comment.

    5. Always.

Kirk, first I want to say thank you for your regular event coverage posts. I always enjoy seeing pics from shows I couldn't make it to and even pics of cars I missed at the shows I do make it to. Also, thanks for taking the time out to personally seek out our questions, concerns, suggestions and praise of the GG events in hope to improve them.

I have been a regular attendee of the Ohio shows (Medina, Norwalk and Columbus) since the mid 90s and I'm still a fan of the show as a whole. My only two concerns are the vendor building and the possibility of a one day registration. I know you have no control over the content of the vendors products, but it would be nice to see the main building be 100% automotive related. I'm always looking for parts for something I'm working on so that building is kind of sacred to me. I could do without the jewelry dealers, and the gutter and lawnchair salesmen. I've always believed that that is what the womens world building was for. As for the registration, these past couple years I have held back from taking my car since I'm only coming down for the day. The $90 price tag (renewal & registration) is a bit much for just one day. Now that GG is no longer running Blue Suede Cruise in Norwalk (*note to everyone that asked it is still going without GG), the membership is just for the one day I can make it to Columbus. The one day registration would get atleast my dads and my car back on the grounds for one day... which was sunday this year

    Hey Dude!
You are a brave man to take this upon yourself with the Q and A deal. Well answered and keep up the good work.

As if I needed to say it, but right here is GIANT hell yes for the Autocross! I have been bummed that it didn't get plugged into the Scottsdale deal untill AFTER the Plymouth got whacked and couldn't compete. The car is currently healing nicely at Elpolacko's shop and will be front and center for it's debut as a cone slaying tool in the spring. I think I can talk Steve into doing the same wit the Green truck as well. We built these things to go around corners, so why not use them to the fullest?

The other comment is this. I was one of the first that I know of to bitch about the Super Sunday deal. I really don't like this at all. But how about this... I think maybe my dislike of the concept stems from my locallity. EVERYBODY, and I mean EVERYBODY in this part of the country doesn't even leave the new car lot without the purchase of big alloy wheels and striping. Period. That makes the idea of a late model modified come one, come all kinda deal very boring around these parts. You see all that stuff in traffic everyday here (exotics too!) and I know Southern California is the same X2. I'm looking through the responses over the last fourteen pages, and I notice the positives on the Super Sunday concept are largely coming form the midwest and eastern parts of the country. How about looking at this as a regional thing? No offense to the guys back there, but with the amount of traveling I used to do there, the one thing I noticed was how uncommon it really was to see tricked out cars on the road, late model or otherwise. There might be more of a regional tolerence for that sort of thing. I hope that doesn't piss too many people off, but I have seen really good cruise nights here in town all but completely taken over by the "2 day old Corvette club guys", to the point where I no longer attend. I just don't want this for something I value as highly as the two Good Guy's events here in town.

You're an Alliance Vendor, so likely a business owner, and you understand business ecomics, right? GG is a business that serves enthusiasts. Participation is completely voluntary on our part, and if its too expensive don't pay it. They've never charged me more than I agreed to pay, haven't auto-renewed my yearly subscription without my permission, or charged my credit card without consent. So for me (and others like me) please explain this gouging you describe.

Do you have first hand experience of this alleged gouging as a vendor, participant or spectator? Or are you just against a business who serves the hot rod community and makes money doing so?

This isn't my fight to fight, I'm just curious.

    Okay, that's funny!

Since the Socialists took over. I'll say no more as I don't want to have Kirk's thread closed over a political argument.

  15. thanks for the reply to my post. you say you want to bring back the drags. if cost is a issue how about finding a smaller less expensive facility. indy columbuus, norwalk, chicago cant be cheap. there are plenty of tracks that could hold a event cheaper. and as far as the over used nationals description to all events lets face it the shows are really regional shows. most hot rodders have already seen the cars in there area. the point im making is what are you offering for my entertainment dollar. stand by a exit mid aftertnoon and there isnt a net big enough to catch all the people leaving. a night race would help keep people around and entertained. there is so much local competition with local car shows out there gg has to find a way to be different. after all a asphalt lot or grass field full of cars is all the same regardless whose banners are zip tied to the fence.

On the other side of the coin of what Flamin' said, I like the mix of booths. I usually stroll with my wife and kids, and they don't typically want to stop where I do. This way we all stay together and have a good time.

Not to disagree with Flamin' just another point of view. But I very much see what he's saying.

I gotta agree with you on this. My girlfriend does dig on the "girlie" kinda booths that the Scottsdale show has, and when she is happy to be someplace, I get to be happy to be someplace! A little of my time spent pleasing her nets me many more hours of enjoying the stuff I like without drama.

Yeah, the mix seems to make it easier for those whose wives may not want to go otherwise. Personally I'd like not to be all car stuff, but the mix seems to work.

I just want to thank you for the cheaper renewal rate [digital] and want to thank Goodguys for only allowing 1932 cars to be judged for Duece pick.I know NSRA is doing a Duece pick and has picked at least two Chevy Nova for thier Duece pick instead of a 1932 vehicle.I would also like to see a one day entry if possible.I agree with a lot of the other comments that have been said.Power parkers are always going to be a problem and the only way to stop them is to tow them no questions asked.

  21. Not really any question, just more old man ramblings. :D

I used to be a GG member for many years, and attend many shows, but not anymore (since about 2007, I quit).

First, the cost. Not for the membership, cause I do like the magazine. I just wish it was the size of normal magazines because Im a pack rat that saves mags and it was harder to store. The cost of the shows. I'm a hard working family man and money is scarce enough to make the bills. To enter my car AND bring the kids it just is too much. Plus, like most of you, I can get attention with my car going ANYWHERE, so handing out the money, just isn't there FOR ME. I think its great if its for you.

Next, the years. I get the reasons behind Sundays, but IMO it brings in the wrong cars and wrong people, but I do understand the reasoning. It just keeps me away. I'm just into 64 and earlier (58 and earlier really). I'm not even a fan of including muscle cars, but thats just me. Of course, its me AND my money :D

Saving spots. I sure hate pulling into a show and seeing row after row of fold out chairs holding countless spots, or even wood stakes with caution tape. Scottsdale was bad with this last time I was there. Once I even parked next to a car, but his buddy showed up and wanted my spot, so they put my car in nuetral and pushed it to the next row. I don't blame GG for that, assholes everywhere in life. But the saving spots I totally blame GG for allowing it.

My wife and kids like the variety. They even had to come and get me from the car to sit in those kick ass hammock chairs things.

  24. How about a gigantic pinata of a late model car for the Saturday croud to smash so they can get their feelings out about how much they dislike super Sundays.

  25. Kirk,My thoughts on the later model stuff is Based on ,What did Gary base the GG idea on? older cars, right? he got hundreds of members on that basis..now change it up?.Why not just keep Dancin with the one that brung ya?..Maybe I'm just a cynical old fart,,(78)..

And this makes a good point for being able to enter a GoodGuys event without having a membership. You don't have to be an Alliance member to enter the HAMB drags or the Revolution.

I know you get 12 issuses of the Gazette for your $35,but like the news stand stuff, most of it does'nt interest me.

Can you make the swap meet bigger? or does it just kinda self regulate itself on the size?

It definitely self regulates. When it grows we give it all the room it needs.
