I have run a second hand jap fuel pump 12 volt close to the tank for about 5 years now they are a sealed unit cost me about 10 bucks. The secret with any electric fuel pump is to run a good filter between them and the tank they cant stand any rubbish whatsoever. I do carry a spare which would take about ten minutes to fit probably in the rain on a dirt road.
Evilfalcon made my own headers its fun when your steering is on the other side.
Arod winfield carbs are old and generally past it unless you are after a period look here in NZ I have used Holden carbs with great results English Strongbergs work well as they have heaps of adjustment The old 97s generally need rebuilding (That means are stuffed) same with 84s but new on e should work well. The biggest cause of trouble with these is people bolting up old carbs and expecting to see them work as new why do you think they were at that swap meet in the first place.
Bigger carbs on some thing like a Rutherford or Alexander head dont always mean they go better its about fuel mix in and exhaust out so with big ports you have to look at the speed the gasses travel. Years ago I corresponded with Ed Winfield who told me the secret is with any fuel exhaust system is design to a given point in front of the carb to a given point down the exhaust he was an expert at this look at the intake on his two up two down motor there is a reason for that carb being way up there.
I believe this is the skill in getting a banger engine to run well if you study articles on the Great Man or as he was sometimes called The Rodfather you will see he was sorting these type of problems out for auto companies right up to his death he was in his nineties, he drove model tees at speeds up too 100 mph in his twentys and ground his first cams as a schoolboy .
Boy do we have a lot to relearn!

  2. I run dual BB's on my Riley 2 port, really can't see any difference between S's or SR's as far as acceleration. The 2 port ran 84 at the Antique Nationals. I now have a pair of BB's on my Winfield flathead, 230 CI planning to go to C's on that engine. Winfield flat head with the BB's ran 82 at the 2010 Nationals. Intake ports are 1 5/8", to me big is not better, whole system needs to be balanced

so you've got the fuel line running from the bowl on the firewall to somewhere under the floor where the pump and filter are, and back out to the carb again somehow?

That is about it general gow though my tank is mounted in the pickup bed out back you could hide the pump and filter anywhere the standard ford filter is not enough with a modern fuel pump you need a modern filter else you will have trouble.

Just plain bill a couple of great looking engines there I think with our motors good presentation is what sells a well built banger.

  6. Actually posted those for Hapydz as he asked about the carburetors!

  7. Exactly. Fuel bowl to pump (mounted to chassis under floor) then back to regulator then to carb.

    Sumtin' like this...

  8. Everything is exposed, got a 1/2 coffee can of bends that didn't work! Left the stock filter/screen in line. Regulator mounted to fuel tank bolt. Short length of injection hose between carburetors and regulator as vibration dampener.

After waiting a couple of months for a backordered distributor cap I finally received an email saying it has been shipped. I'll be changing the stock style out for the modern style round one with some cloth braided wires instead of those ridiculous stock straps. I would like to use the same plugs that are in the car with these Rajah terminals:

The plugs in the car are Champion C-16C and have the top screw on terminal. Does anyone know if those Rajah's will snap over the C-16 screw tops or will I need to get the other type tops for the plugs? Will the newer Champion plug tops screw on to the older plugs? Has anyone done this modification and if so can you please post a picture of the terminals you used?

I believe that all plugs with threaded tops use the same thread--probably some sort of SAE standard.

Most modern plugs have non-removable terminal tops.

  12. I love the original spark plug wires. Simple basic engineering. I love the original cap too. I use a wing cap now with insulated wires. I think I bought the wires and cap from Charlie Yapp at secrets of speed. I have a Rielly two port head. My next plan is to install the old copper strips buy connecting two together and using heat shrink where they may be too close to the valve covers and where the two old strips are connected with rivets. Those original spark plug wires are fool proof and get a lot of comments.

  13. I use this combination starting with a stock B distributor (did change the springs) using a Mallory "best" coil and condenser.

This morning I went down to a friend of mines shop and picked through his box of used plugs. I took four of them and tried the towers on the old Champions but of course they arent the same thread (nothing is ever simple). I stopped by another friends place this afternoon and had him (I'm not allowed to touch his tools  ) re-thread the new towers to match the old plugs. Problem solved. Tomorrow I order the lacquered, cloth covered wires from The Hot Rod Company. When I get everything together I'll post a picture.

Ahh..it's making sense now. thanks fellas.

  18. 2 threads are offered by most restoration company's at this time, 8 32 and a 4 mm size, my 18 mm champions use the 8 32.

  19. Bluto...Would that be the 1 2 4 3 shuffle ?:D

Here is a shot I took today of the "B"s far side. Need to do a bit of paint touch up but barring any unforeseen circumstance next week in Mn., I think I'm done. I will post a picture of the more interesting, other side tomorrow. It's running much better now thanks to Jimski and all of the other Bangermeisters that have helped !!!

  22. Happy Days

Here is my engine. Looks like we went different directions on generators and cooling. I just installed the power house generator the other day. I have a Stromberger 81 for the primary carburetor and a 97 for the secondary. The progressive linkage and the spark advance took a few days and a lot of trial and error. It is running good today. The dog has to ride in the front seat and it is a little crowded. He has lost about 30 pounds and now weighs 193. I try to keep him and the wife both under 200 pounds. Just kidding about the wife.

  23. And a shot of the interesting, near side . The good thing about next weekend in Mn. is that my engine builder and very good friend, Bob Baas from Alexandria, Mn will be there so he will be able to check the tune of the Super "B", as he hasn't seen it since the roadster was finished, if in fact it is finished .

Have any better pictures of the linkage you used , I am running twin 81's and not sure how to set up a progress linkage mine work together

Also any one running a Moon style tank in a pickup I setting one up w but wanted a gauge , still running 6 volt

    skip

  27. I like both sides of your engine. I had a fan break and it hit the radiator pretty hard. The radiator did not leak. I ran it without a fan and there were no heating problems. I bought a good radiator from Brass Works and I was in a small depression after the fan placed a battle scare on the radiator.

Could you post more pictures of the car?

    Thanks

I will try to post some picture tomorrow. The carbs have a long throttle shafts and the progress linkage is between the carbs and distributor. The arm on the front carb is twice as long as the one on the second carb. I bought the rods from the local hardware store along with the shaft collars.
I went through a lot of rods. I bought some parts from Speedway and The Secretes of Speed. I built some lever arms from 3/8 square bar and drilled a bunch of holes in them. The end that fits on the throttle shaft was slit and a hole was drilled for a screw to tighten the lever arm to the throttle shaft. I messed around with this for a long time. I ended up buying a progressive linkage kit from Secrets of Speed. I think it was about $100 but the lever arms look like small piston rods. The second carb does not start to open until the first is half way open and then they open both until they hit the stops on the carbs.
