  2. Guess I should have added that I bought it from one of my spinster aunts and she likely gave me a break on the price. But still that '60 Ford probably wasn't worth much more than a couple hundred $$ at most. I don't think it had ever been washed since she bought it in '61, and the Michigan winters & roadsalt did their thing on it bigtime. When I got it, it was quite rotted out. Both rear wheel wells were peforated, along with the quarters, trunk, rockers... Anyone riding in the back seat would get a wet hiney if it was raining.

My family had property north of Grand Rapids where there was no paved roads and the county used a salt brine solution to keep the dirt from blowing and I do remember 5 year old vehicles being a little on the rusty side.

In the early 80s, buying cars for next to nothing was still very common. I bought a 1973 Ford LTD for $125, a '72 Buick Skylark convertible for $200 and a '66 Chevy II (Nova) for $40. I traded the Chevy II to a buddy for his 1962 Mercury Comet. Also bought a '75 Gran Fury in 1985 for $150, drove it every day for 3 years and sold it for $200. Those kind of deals probably don't come around too often nowadays.

I've owned more than 60 cars in my 64 years. My late wife used to give me hell for "buying those old P.O.S. beaters!" But I could buy a car for a couple hundred dollars and drive it for maybe a year, than either toss it, or rob parts off it, or sell it for enough to buy something else. They were work cars, all they had to do was get me to work.
That all changed with the advent of the in car computer. Now, I can't even figure out what's wrong with the damn thing, much less fix it!

  17. Around 1972 or so, i bought a 56 Chevy 4 dr for 20 bucks.
    A friend bought a 53Chevy for 30 dollars.
Both cars ran, though not well. BUT, in 1972 I took home 52 Dollars a week!

That strange looking back window was used in 1960 on the lower priced full-size Ford sedans. The cheaper full-size Ford at the time was called the Fairlane and came in both 2dr and 4dr models. Both used the same rear window. Production totals show 186,335 for 2dr and 263,607 for 4dr.

Of note, the same rear window was used on 2dr and 4dr 1960 Edsel sedans.
