I find it hard to believe that a car as unique as this one has not been found yet!

A 57 that Dan previously owned (prior to the gold car) has been found recently. After several emails between the new owners friend and I, and then Dan Glover, it seems that Dan is now in touch with the new owner. This previous car was a black 57 that was supercharged and I believe the engine then made it's way into a front engine dragster. Later the black 57 was sold and the new owner painted it the orange color with "The Great Pumpkin" lettering.

The current owner found the car with the quarter panels un-radiused back to stock and primered, and there was a thin coat of orange over the lettering. He was thinking of selling the car again, but after discovering the lettering underneath and learning a little more history, he has now decided to keep it as is.

I would love to see it returned to it's former street racer/drag racer configuration complete with cut quarters, but that remains to be seen.

Here are a few pics of the original engine and the car when it was black (Notice the very unique carb setup that appears to fit under the hood.) There is a pic of Dan and the dragster. Then there are some pics of it's later "Great Pumpkin" look, and finally the primered pics of how the car sits today in Michigan.

Still no trace of the gold car, but cool that this one has been found...

I've seen pics of the great pumpkin here and there and never gave it a second thought, that's pretty cool that it was one of Dan's cars. Sure wish that damn gold car would turn up though.

Just a short reply to the Great Pumpkin story.
I'm not the guy in the dragster, but one of the guys pushing it just to the right of the guy in the drivers seat. In the drivers seat is Bob Thompson (Big Bah) illustrator of the late 60's Hot Rod mag "Shop Talk" column. Remember the cartoons that went with every story?
PLEASE, NEVER trash can the wheel wheels ever again...I'm so glad they have been corrected. It has always bothered me that someone did that. The correct way to get big tires on a car is to narrow the rear-end!
    Thanks.

    Dan

  16. Sorry. A bit OT. I had a 63 Belvidere / 440 / TF. I got the valve body out of a record holding mopar from Yak, Wa. This was maybe late 60s / early 70s. What a cool trans with the free wheeling. It was a manual shift and stout on the shifts.

Hope the 57 is found. Great thread.

The fun thing about this engine is that the blower could be turned off from inside the car while driving and again turned back on at any time.
My friend Don built the whole deal before I meet him.
The way it worked was the side draft manifold on the blower was in a "Y" in between the carb and the blower. In the “Y” was a valve that would rotate to allow fuel to either go into the blower or into the manifold under the blower and block fuel from going the other way. Linked to the valve were two push rods and arms that engaged the blower by rotation of the valve through a '39 ford trans synchromesh cog located in the blower drive snout. The action was hydraulic from under the dash in the car which was activated buy a large 8"dia vacuum cylinder. A handle mounted below the dash above the trans tunnel would port vacuum on either side of the cylinder depending on if you wanted the blower on or off. The vacuum cylinder pushed or pulled a hydraulic piston that activated another hydraulic piston on the engine mechanism to complete the process. The blower could be turned off at any rpm while driving. To turn on the blower it was necessary to let the engine idle. When everything was engaged either on or off there was a small green light that came on. Anytime the on off feature was in motion another light next to the green light would be red.
The time to go from on to off, or off to on was about 10 seconds.

  18. a little o/t
hmmm so it was possible to turn the blowers on and off like in the movies mad max and lone wolf mcquade which supposedly were the same engines

Saw a movie several years ago, I don't remember the name. Had two boys and a girl, of course they were running from the law. Had a 57 Chevy that they would street race. They would race, be behind in the race, hit a switch and a blower would turn on like an early Ford square A/C compressor. The A/C like clutch would engauge the blower and the car would take off and win the race. They were always fighting, because the people they beat didn't think the race was fair. I thought it was sooooo fake because untill now I had never heard of a blower that could be cut off and on.

Actually... they call it "injection" and I don't think they ever clarify what that was... But apparently, it's legan to run at "the national championship"... or so the dialogue goes

They claim 8.7 in the Quarter (in 1958) ... hand held stop watch and all.
Gee whiz folks...is it too hard to hire people who know what they are talking about for car movies ??

That's the movie, I saw an A/C clutch that the switch was supposed to turn on. A nitrous solenoid wouldn't need a clutch, would it? I would like to see it again, even tho Saxxon is correct, they never really explained it, but I think I remember seeing a blower, but it's been years since I saw this movie.
