Man...hard to keep up with all your posts. Isn't the Tobasco car the one that went YEARS with the OG owner and turned into a modern day bellybutton car?

Man, I loved this car. All steel. Despite its girth it won a few open shows. Off to Industry Hills for the speedway races.

Joe was here this weekend (Don't tell his cows) and I had him looking at this site. When we found this pic, he told me the story about this partner. I think he said Larry Morgan (not the same one) and that was Morgan's brother in the pic. Joe had tried to talk Montgomery out of the Mustang, but he would not sell it. Must have been after breaking off the shifter, because he did sell THIS very innovative gasser/altered which was on the cover of HOT ROD January 1971. Airoso sold the car to it's current owner Bruce Caballero of Ontario, CA. They spent some time together at 2012 March Meet. Bruce is currently looking for a Boss 429 for the car or to trade it for a Willys.

 

Pete was running with a 10.20 record and had 9.60s in the bag ...as I remember it !!!! That dude was hard to beat...

So WCD, what you might be saying is that back in those days if enough people wanted to race a particular type car/class, they just built them the way they thought they should look rather than a rule book?
Almost sounds like Georgia run what you brung to me, which certainly could be viewed a tad diverse without $$,$$$.00 as an incentive.

They did around here too. Texas Anglia Circuit comes to mind.

Lots of that still going on around here. Outlaw Fuel Altered circuit, Texas Outlaw Pro Mod Assn., some sort of Top Sportsman and Automatic ProStock.

 

This is a good example of a conventional F/X funny car with a commonly available mass produced body vs a totally aftermarket and drag racing specifically built glass' body with a tubing space frame (center driven Logghe style) car.
Note the missing hood and rear window venting employed on Mr. Taylors Barracuda in a loosing effort to keep these cars competitive. Several older supercharged steel cars like this still matched and competed on local levels well up into the later 70's.
But because automobiles were never designed aerodynamically like airplanes, advances in power brought it's own end to unlimited junkyard available stock bodied racing cars.

Yea, the associations run their own rules, but I'm sure the West Coast Gasser Assn. had some sort of rules and guidelines too. And when you think about it, even the "run what ya brung" guys didn't let rails run. So there was some sort of organization, if it was written down or not.
