Anyone have any idea what Alternator I could get that could be tucked under my original generator on my 58? I don't want to "see it", but the last two years I've smoked my generator coming back from Salina! I guess that it don't like the AC blasting on high for 7 or so hours straight! preferably some cheap factory model off something, heck even import if it disappears!!
    Thanks!

When I was under my work beater 92 Geo Prizm the other day the alternator looked pretty tiny. It has an odd bracket though.

Take a look at one for a 95 or so Suzuki Samari.
If the case was painted generator black it should pretty well hide under the generator.

  4. Nippondenso alternators are fairly small in diameter. They are found on many cars especially imports.

You could also try running one off your driveshaft.

farm equipment denso alternators are very tiny but have only 40amps or so of output. They will overheat inside that case and fail, Powermaster makes a GEN/Alternator but is $$$.

Anybody know what kind of amp rating those small alternators have???

  10. High enough to run the A/C and the stereo, and the electric fuel pump and the computer, and the electric windows and . . .

  11. Ha Ha... True! ^ ^ ^

Many imports are fairly well equipped while the others are loaded. So a 'denso alternator from one of those cars will certainly have enough balls to power anything a hot rod is going to throw at it. One of my cars is an O/T BBC powered, moly ch***is street car with alot of high draw electronics including an MSD 7AL3 ignition system and I'm running one. If I remember correctly I got mine out of a Nissan but there are alot of cars out there that use 'em.

Did not intend to hijack this thread but thanks for the positive info, I will continue installing the one I have here into my project.
Mine also is from a Nissan.
    They sure are small...

I got a new 80 amp from a Suzuki off ebay for $60 and a $10 forklift one (guessing 25 amp) for the v belt pulley as cheaper than buying a pulley. Highest rating is 100 amp. Mounting circles seem to be 5" or 5-1/2".

Neat, but the ford generator case is larger than the Chevy generator case, so that one won't fit. The technique is the same though, if you find a smaller alternator.

Thanks guys, I'll check out some of those links and might do some junkyard crawling, heck my electric fans on the Camaro is off a Nissan Sentra wagon! LOL!
I'd love to use a powergen (or whatever they are called), but they don't make them with a power steering output shaft.

  17. Have you considered finding a better shop to rebuild your generator? Unless you have a really weird set up the car engine drives the compressor and all the generator does is run the fan which shouldn't be too much for it. Any chance there is an optional high output generator available (police cars, taxi's etc). If you got it at a place like Pep Boys I rest my case.

Maybe a good auto electric shop could rebuild your generator for higher output or supply a heavy duty generator. I know they were available before the alternators came in.

Or will you keep the generator and add a small alt for extra power?

  19. Sounds like he wants to run the Alt. under not IN the gen.........The gen is also the power steering pump, lots of room to hide the alt.

You might want to also check out the alt on a Yanmar tractor. They are pretty small but I don't know if they have the output you need.

I'm using a small alternator off a Mitsubishi of some sort. You can just barely make it out in the lower left of these pics.

Ditto, Powermaster....."looks like" a gen,..and has all the output you 'll ever need. I have one on my 8BA flatmotor,....no complaints .

Get a smallish alternator and replace generator with one from a 55-59 Chevy that has the Power steering pump drive from rear of generator. Make a simple coupling (they sell those springy thingy couplings that make it flexible), then mount alternator using power steering bolt holes on generator. Saves you a belt too.

  24. I had the same quandry with the roadster. Got tired of the rebuilt generatior not keeping up. Got tired of the worry. Read a tech article on stuffing one inside a Ford case and considered it. I finally gave up and got a Powergen. Solved all my charging problems - so nice!
Only problem with the Powergen is the cost! It still hurt for several days!!!

Thanks guys, I can't run a Powergen because they don't make one with the PS shaft coming out the back. I do like the idea of running an alternator off that, but then I'd loose the power steering, which I don't want to do. I really like the look of the stock setup, so that's why I'd like to hide one under it all and just "unhook" the wires from the stocker.

Go to ebay and search "Denso alternator"

You could put a newer power steering pump (1960 up) at the front of the engine. That would allow the alternator on the back of the generator. But I do understand the "keeping it stock" idea. Good luck, I would go with Nippon Denso alternators, pretty small in size and can be tucked into some crevice where it is hard to see.
