did anyone race a torino in modified production?Im just curius and love this thread!!! my number 1 favorite class in drag racing!!!!!
Its good to see ERNIE DUTRE on here 1965 winternationals street elim winner and national record holder. the old 55 set the NHRA speed record at HALF MOON BAY at 122mph in 1964 .
Wow!! That olde "shoebox" had to push a heckuva lot of air to hit 122mph - even at HMB! Got any more pix of the 55 Ermie?
We've moved. Lots of Modified Production info over here! http://www.colesy-juniorstockforum.com/forum/index.php
My Uncle Rufus Boswell ran a B/MP 39 Chevy 2dr Sedan called "LiLBit" back in the late 60's out of Maryland, till the front end split and it went end over end, he survived but the car did not. My future project is a clone of that car, I've been gathering pics for years for it and have the help of the man himself, so someday I'll stumble on a barn find 39 sedan, till then I'll build it in my head...... Here it is at Aquasco in 1966.
I agree Modified Production was one of the Best Classed ever for the N.H.R.A. Those were the day's for sure because there were so many really great running cars. Why not bring it back again? Jimbo
Here's my '62 Galaxie during it's C/MP career in the early '70's - owned at that time by John Veermeersch. Randy Millard (Henrysnephew)
Rules question: In the early years MPs had to run with a full exhaust system, yes? Then at some point racing headers were allowed (with cut-outs?) but they still were "attached" to the stock exhaust system, yes? When did the NHRA throw up their hands and allow just racing headers?
MAN!!!!! That thing is ALL engine & tires! Very cool! You wouldn't happen to have a photo with a front end on would you?
The two Candy Apple pics were taken at New England Dragway and the one when the car was black with a red hardtop was taken in 1966 at The Spring Nationals in Bristol, Tenn.
One of my favorite memories of those days was watching the Hurst crew tear apart and rebuild that hemi in their motel room at the Holiday Inn Airport in Indy.
All is not lost. We at the North Jersey Outlaws (NJO) race Modified production rules. The class is limited to solid axle Corvettes, SBC engines, manual clutch transmissions. Sorry no 10,000 rpm launches now, too expensive. But 6000+ and shifting 7500+ common place. Oh, and most of the time these cars are on the street do what comes "naturally" ,if you get my drift. The video is an early one. Now that engine pulls almost 2000 more rpm. Old school rules. Pete, if you see this, the next time we rent the track you are invited. Jim BTW, Jim D you have to race with us some day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iKfIrZd2I8
Jim although our black cars may look similar I'm afraid yours may give mine an inferiority complex. One of these days though I am sure we will get together.-Jim
Yes, I still own it today. Bought it from John V in '77, bracket raced till around '83, street driven since '85. Randy Millard (Henrysnephew) Then: Now:
Have a photo request from a friend-he would like to find pictures of a 55 chevy hardtop out of Penn. that was called " captain crunch" . Anybody ever heard of it?
Captain Crunch was a 2 door hardtop. I used to see it sitting at a Sunoco station at the corner of Sumneytown Pike, and route 363 near Lansdale, PA. The 55 disappeared, and a Vega Panel appeared...also called Captain Crunch.
Hey Racemad55 & undergroundss, Here is the '55 Chevy 2 door hardtop better known as "Captain Crunch" you are looking for! Can you guys give me some driveline stats and where the car ended up? Thank you! Sincerely, John
Good friend Don at East Coast Chevy owns the car, just gave it to his son Don jr. don't think there's a drivetrain in it yet.
