I had to go look for a picture of this 1952 Studebaker COMMANDER V-8 after seeing one in a genuine Commnader today at a car show. The guy who owns it told me it was sourced from GM's marine division, giving Stude their first V-8, much less OHV V-8.

I was a little surprised, but even more surprised by the plumbing on this (apparently) one-year version. The only PIC I could find is a stripped engine, but this doesn't look a damned bit like the 289 I had in my '62.

So, my question is to the STUDE HAMBERS: Did Studebaker get their first V-8 from GM and, if so, what was the displacemant and dimentions for '52??

Okay, a little diggin showed the '52 Commander had a 90-degree V-8 of 232 CID,which sounds about right.

But, is the GM marine engine the very same mill?

 

Stude had the 232 ohv V/8 in 1951 and no it's not like a Chevy....more like the early Cad/Olds.

 

No. The Stude was a Studebaker designed and manufactured engine. It had some similarities to the early OHV Cads, but was NOT a GM engine.

 

Is this up the road from Sharron Baptist Church in Forsyth Co. GA.????

The Studebaker V-8 was introduced in 1951 in the second edition of the famous "bulletnose." This same engine was the basis of all Studebaker V-8's through 1964. In late '62 it was converted to a full flow oil system, but still remained essentially the same engine that was introduced in 1951.

The engine from its beginning to its end was a Studebaker engine. It was not an adaptation of a GM Marine engine.

In 1965 all production was in Canada. When production shut down in South Bend, it also shutdown its foundry, thus shutting down engine production. Thus for two model years 1965 and 1966 The Studebakers, now produced in Hamilton, Ontario, came with GM engines made by McKinnon in Canada. Both V-8's and Sixes were GM engines.

There are lots of strange rumors and stories about Studebaker power plants, most are not true.

 

Okay, Joe, I'm not dissing anybody, but the 289 I had from '62 didn't look like the 4-bolt hold down valve cover shown in the illustration, nor on the '52 I saw today.

I'd sure like to see some pix, if anybody has any.

Thanks 4everblue. So that's a gennie 232 Stude? The front plumbing PLUS the 4 valve-cover bolts look the same as the "52 engine I saw today. THANKS to all HAMBers who showed interest and pix. I would say it's a mystery settled.

NOW, next time I see Mr. Daniel and his green '52 Commander, I can share this info with him! THANKS AGAIN!

that quote above the fireplace mantel "fancy paints at my desire, her magic pictures in the fire", it's an opening line from a Lewis Carol poem from the late 1800's called "faces in the fire". its a man writing about a woman he loved that he pined away for all his life.....don't know if he lost her, or maybe never told her how he felt...i wonder. anyways its good stuff. cool to that picture you posted with that in it.

i guess i like to picture the guy writing that poem, sitting by a fire, drinking rum, drowning his broken heart, tossing snapshots taken with an old camera of the girl of his dreams, his love lost or never had.... lol poor bastard.

 

Wichita Kansas' Union Station in 1914 looks much the same today. I don't know if it is still there, but there used to be a glass door inside with a "Harvey House" emblem in it.

 

The old library at Wichita which was replaced by a new one across the street. I remember going in here a few times while growing up in southern Wichita. When they moved the library, they closed the street and passed the books hand to hand from the old shelves to the new shelves. They asked for volunteers from the local schools, but I was busy and couldn't.

 

Butts Motor Company 1947, these Oldsmobiles were modified for soldiers who suffered injuries in WWII.

 

1955. The airport was opened in 1954, moving from the McConnell Air Force Base area.

This is the new library and the volunteers passing the books from the old library to the new. I recognize the tall, bald buy with glasses. Vernon Kirby was my junior high school principal at Truesdall. I probably gave him the flu a few years later. I was interviewing for a teaching job while I was a senior in college, had a 101 temperature, and he was the person who interviewed me. (I didn't get a nibble.)

 

This is the place I interviewed, the Board of Education building in Wichita, I believe this will be the last picture I post as the rest are in the 70's and later. All the above Wichita pictures are from "Wichita Then and Now," which shows the modern area from Google maps. Some of those are still there, some are heavily modified, and some are gone.
