Dog, great contributions! THANKS for these ads showing the "High Pockets" Packards. For those who find them appealing, there's a certain delicacy of body lines, belying the power under the hood! Too bad cost prevented the Pan American from being built in great numbers. What a beaut!

And the ad for the original "Continental" kits, so famous on '50s cars (along with Fulton visors!), is something special too. THANKS EVERYBODY for our daily stroll back through time!

JIMI's HEMI: Amazing how this ostentatious '50s "Googie" architecture could be so outrageously futuristic, yet actually be attractive and effective! It DID reflect an optimistic, can-do attitude of folks during the post-war period, didn't it?

GLAD to here that the one in Fayetteville survived!

I miss slot racing a whole bunch. Still remember taking the buss on saturdays to the hobby shop with my case/cars/controller to run in the weekly saturday races. I'm sick that I threw all my trophys away years ago. I held the track record with a Classic Asp with a Champion 500 motor in it. Still have my Monogram Chapparal 2D coupe.....

 

Owned by Charles Shipman Payson of New York. His wife Joan Whitney Payson went on to be the first majority owner of the NY Mets. They had a fabulous mansion on Long Island.

The yacht is a 69' Commuter named Saga at Clifton Dock in Northeast Harbor in the 1930's. His brother-in-law, John Hay Whitney owned Aphrodite II and it was common for the two yachts to race from their neighboring Long Island estates to New York City. Saga always won. In 1937, Whitney ordered the 74' Aphrodite III, with twin V-12 Packard engines so he could beat Shipman.

I also miss the slot cars and those huge tracks, but not so much the racing as the new ones are SO detailed it would be a shame to go out and start cracking them up! Gary

Yeah, the new super detailed ones are very cool. To me what ruined the fun was the older guys getting into the hobby with lots of bucks and the advent of the "unlimited" class with cars that looked like plastic wedges, and all you had to do was hold the controller wide open and never let up. Whoever had the most money to produce the fastest car won. Hell, you couldn't even see some of the cars going around the track they were so fast. Kind of like professional drag racing today.......
