Leo Kottke and David Bromberg should have been the headliners. The two best reasons to go (and the Earl Scruggs review would have made a nice opening act).

    Pickin' heaven.

I was a part of it, I supplied and sold the official event t-shirts. It was in '74. Back then, even the big bands were not yet selling their own t-shirts.

Within the state, the promoters advertised a small crafts festival with some bluegrass music, but in the rest of the country, they advertised it as a full blown rock festival with all that implies.

Missouri has always had corrupt politics; the promoters managed to bribe or coerce the state to let them use the state fairgrounds with the agreement that there would be no cops on the show grounds during the event. Security was provided by the promoters and basically, anything was allowed. Allegedly, the Kansas City Mob supplied the drugs which were sold openly.

During my 50 year career selling t-shirts, I never had an event that brought as many large bills into the cash register as that one, I assume because of all the drug money. The promoters were accused of helicoptering drugs in, but no charges came about after an investigation by the state.

I just recently came across a website about the festival stating that some local Sedalia filmmakers are doing a documentary on it.

  14. My mother in law passed away a while back, and while going thru things we ran across this picture from 1938. Man-o-man, no wonder my father in law wanted to get back from the Pacific theater so bad. Wow.

  27. Women from this era had such a pure, wholesome look. I think a lot had to do with the fact that they lived a more wholesome life. Beautiful photo of your mother-in-law

I'd have to disagree Doc.... there is a lot of dignity in this picture in spite of the hardship that society at the time placed on this woman and her child. She was obviously willing to make the choice to be proud of who she was and set that example for her daughter. And she was, and if still alive still is, a beautiful woman.
