LOL believe me I make all my own stuff, I have been known to trade some welding for beers when I needed welds done though, and for the record the only time I've ever been near a nail place was when I treated all my little granddaughters to having their nails done, how do women stand the smell in those places? you about need a respirator it's so strong, been getting my hands dirty pretty much my entire life:D I also have a very needy old American car too, needs this part then it needs that part, then needs more gas, I won't get rid of it though, would be a shame to send a proud old girl to the s****per, I'll park it before I do that

What was the topic of this thread again? 4 pages of cl*** warfare, trash talk, Jay Leno talk, badmouthing fellow car guys and a sprinkling of "Jap" car racism.... and I still don't know what the hell "German Silver" is.

    This thread is toast....

  3. what's wrong with someone being successful and want to spend some of it in cars? when has it become a crime to have money? whey are people with money looked down upon as if they stole it and don't deserve it? there is a lot of cl*** envy in this country right now. America used to be known as a land of opportunity where anyone can make it , and as soon as you do you get criticized for it

i'm thankful there are people with money that will spend it

nothing, The point I was making and I can't stand is some of these guys act like they have actually worked on these cars when they haven't lifted a finger, nothing wrong with having money and preserving a rare old car, I'm glad for those who do, but there is something very wrong with taking credit for work you didn't actually do, having put blood sweat and tears into cars over the years, I know how much work is involved, I have owned both import and American cars by the way, and currently own both, both also require a lot of work, I would never take credit for work others have done, EG I can't weld worth a ****, but I try to credit those who help me with welding, I hope to change that soon by the way, building a car,any car is a lot easier when you have friends with specialized skills, I can do pretty much anything on the car myself, but everyone has one weakness, the time you spend with friends building stuff is worth more then anything else anyway, and thats something the posers will never understand. I love this stuff by the way thats why I hang out here, if it has four wheels it makes me happy, had the chance to stand a couple of feet from an old slingshot dragster earlier this week, while it was fired up, having my fillings rattled out just made the entire rest of my week, try to explain that to a poser or a gold chainer

I think I must be an ***hole, because I would love to be crazy rich and have fancy vintage European cars sharing space with my old american tin...

Just before you go to sleep tonight think about the retired neurosergeon with clean fingernails and a Great Automobile collection, none of them made in Japan. Sleep well. Bob :)

Bob, the neurosurgeon I'm thinking of has a lot of Euro stuff too. Some of the best in the world, and I doubt he works on any of them. And he's definately alright in my book.

It's amazing how many guys in here complain about "snobery" when they are the ones who practice "reverse snobery". Anyone who can afford to buy paint, or new tires for their old car is a "gold chainer". Only the guys driving rust buckets, or, as a matter of fact, CAN'T even drive their old pieces of ****, are cool!
There are car guys in every strata of financial means, get over it!
The guys who work on cars for a living are glad to have guys who don't, they help pay the mortgage!

Around here there are lots of guys who come up from New York, and keep their 50 foot boats on our docks...most are nice folks who sit on their boats all weekend because they are worried about taking them out. Many are doctors, lawyers, employers, customers, etc. and keep lots of craftsmen working on their projects. But they are definetly NOT sailors, and when they are sitting out on their boats in their expensive outfits they are funny.

Boy its thick up in here!
'Traditional' right? drive em, right? work on em, right?
This car is all of that, and yes, I am quite proud to say that my father and I own the car, and guess what, we build and drive hot rods too!
I do drive the cars, thousands of miles at a time in fact, those of you who know me, know this to be true, and this is the key to promoting and saving our hobby, old cars rule, no matter what it is, or how well done, get em done, get em out, share em...
I can guarantee that this car contains MANY busted knuckles, and with hell of a lot of p***ion, from a hell of a lot of people and most every one involved is a traditional hot rod guy, who drives hot rods, it was built to drive, and drive hard, and it will be.
As for the guy who started this thread, he went out of his way to ***ist on this, repairs had been attempted, and no metal color matched, its bare polished trim, its soldered on before the fender is painted, it had to look right and BE right, or the car wouldn't be right.
Sure there are a lot of folks who build cars for Pebble Beach, who may not be too involved, and that's a bit of a bummer, but others have said it well, at least they are promoting the same values as you, so deal with it. I challenge any of you to look at these cars and not like em.
These cars are quite amazing, and I sure hope you guys will take the time to view or ride in any of them, before you start belching out all this ****, cuz you sure look like a bunch of kids when you dont know what the hell you are talking about. Do a little homework, you might start to look as smart as you think you are...

as for the science of restoration, and making a car perfect, i give ANYONE kudos who takes it that far!

building a car in any form takes a huge amount of work, and money. i have been blessed with customers who have the resources to allow me to build some neat projects. all my life i have been around hot rods and i have seen how much people with money and power have PROTECTED our sport from governmental demise. the average builder doesn't stand a chance by his self, we need everyone to be as one when it comes to our sport. weather you want to believe it or not, the pebble beach crowd is part of our car family.

SEMA AND SRMA have not gotten where they are without wealthy supporters.

For the folks that hate on the Pebble Beach participants; have you been to the Pebble Beach event and experienced this alleged posing yourself? Let us hear about the firsthand stories.

I'm willing to bet that these car owners know as much about their cars as we do about ours.

Some people are good at building cars. Some people are good at making money to pay others to build them cars that they love. What's the problem?

  15. There is not a thing wrong in the world with having money and spending it on a car or whatever you want to spend it on. Having money is not a sign of success it is just a sign that you have money.

Success often is mistakenly measured by what you have when in fact success as well as wealth is not what you have, but who you are. Lots of dope dealers have money to throw around, and they do because they want you to know that they have lots of money to throw around. I don't know that I would call that successful it is just ill gotten booty.

Its funny, I have been to Pebble Beach a couple of times, I was being paid to be there so I suppose that makes me not successful, just a mule that is good with a wrench. It is a good place to observe some exceptional cl***ic cars, and it is also a good place to observe people. The truly wealthy don't spend any time trying to look wealthy. The folks with new money make damned sure that you know it, I guess it is just hard to leave the trailer park behind.

Granted this is from the keyboard of one who is not successful so if you have money you should just take it with a grain of salt.

    Canigo,
    Nice old car.

Colonel Mustard. In the Library. With a German Silver candle stick.

  18. i couldn't agree more. everyone's definition of success is different. i have an older brother who is VERY successful money wise , but is just a miserable SOB that no one can hardly stand to be around...even our mother sometimes! he has all the toys you can imagine and a BIG beautiful home. i'm sometimes asked if i'm jealous , and i always say " hell no......i wouldn't trade life's with him for a million dollars"

  19. Too bad more people don't get it.

    Geeez...

This thread sure provided a forum for the Divas to come out & identify themselves. :D
    & there's some serious negativity within... :( .
    So be it... :D .
    But, it doesn't affect me... :D .

Me, I learned a bit more about German Silver, & where to look for different forms of it, that I didn't know of. To those guys, "Thank you" . Seriously.

For the few of you that didn't get it, German Silver could/would be used where you wanted (& had the $$$ for) "real" trim or ... , instead of just plating something. No different than gold/silver/br***/copper/pewter/whatever. Plating works well, as do veneers, but some folks prefer the item to be solid. At least w/a solid item, you won't polish through the plating. It may be that only the owner knows, or cares. Not much different than finding (or painstakingly recreating) some old rare part instead of a re-pop, or metal-finishing vs filler (any kind), because "that's the way it was originally done". In "some" cases, it's called personal pride. Bill Harrah & Leno come to mind... Each to his own...

For you guys that have "issues" w/folks that have more $$$ than you, try an at***ude adjustment. Start w/something known as: The Law of Attraction. It works, you'll be a lot happier, & while $$$ aren't everything - not by a long shot, they can be useful. :) . What do you really want? Since you become what you think about most of the time, thinking about what you don't have, lack of, & negativity, just gets you more of the same. Unfortunately, that is the "other side" of the Law of Attraction. Took me a hell of a long time to learn that. Now I can appreciate something that someone else has & displays - & not necessarily for the reason(s) they chose to show it off. :D .

    FWIW.

    Marcus...

  21. I actually don't have a problem with folks that have money. I just don't respect people that think that having money is what makes them respectable. I guess that would be you at this point. Respect is earned.

The thread is actually about a fella touting his company, we normally call that spam. I think that it is nice that he performs a service for restorers, and now we know how to get ahold of him if we are ever restoring an old actor's Bently. Opps too late already done that. I'll give him this I am not a chemist and wouldn't have known that a trim piece was made from German Silver if he hadn't told me so.

Tell you what when you get around to making some of that German Silver into trim for your Saab be sure and post it. I am pretty sure that Saab used it on most of the trim didn't they?

Well maybe I am not good enough to talk to you, I haven't been around long enough to rub the nickle plate off an old Ford bumper. But this is just one diva to another.

I was kinda shocked nobody called him on the spam thing earlier, but I ***umed there was too much cl*** warfare goin on for anyone to notice...

  23. So many fellas tout their shops anymore that I think that it is a moot point.

I would have been more impressed if he had shown us the process involved in making the piece or at least showed us the finished product. Then other than knowing about his service we would have had something of value.

I have a problem with everyone and anyone that ARGUES on the internet. Even more so for people that actively seek out those arguments. In my opinion, those people are nerds... ****s... lack self esteem... and just generally ****.

Sorry. If you do it on gr***, you don't get to claim you did a burnout. Especially if it's only a one-tire-(non)fire! Where I come from that's called "turfing." Get a locker :)

And canigo, thanks for chiming in an putting the Internet name-callers to shame.

I'm sure some of you guys realize this, but I can see many do not. The percentage of people with money who are ***holes is pretty much eqivalent to the percentage of people with no money that are ***holes. Having money does not make you a jerk, people tend to be jerks independent of their financial status.

I know a few cars guys that are mega-wealthy. Not one went to college, and all started out poor, driving trucks or working as used car dealers. They have all shown at Pebble Beach and won trophies. If their cars were posted here a bunch of you would be making snob/rich jokes about them I'm sure.
