The cost at a rebuild shop is usually pretty close to the cost of a high quality rebuilt at the parts house but personally I'd rather have mine rebuilt at a reliable shop.

PM me if you can't find a shop locally that can do it as I know of a shop that does a good job and takes rebuild jobs by mail on a regular basis and has a quick turn around.

Generally the local shop that's been around forever is the best to take it to. Plus you get YOUR starter back in the end.

Thanks all, I see cores on EBAY for like $20, if it is as reasonable of a price as you guys got I might just have them build me a spair to go in the trunk with my other parts, as I am planning to daily drive and road trip this Packard when I get her (anything THIS difficult has to be a "her") right.

Obviously you haven't done this yourself, maybe once. Yeah, you can throw brushes and other parts into it, but if you have to cut the commutator or do any testing in process (growl test the armature in particular), almost nobody is set up to do it at home.

get yours fixed for sure, I don't think there is much high quality available in anything anymore, you would most likely get a poorly re manufactured starter back from China or india or Mexico, stick with a local place

I just paid $100.00 for an '53 olds unit (with new arm) and $130.00 for a Chrysler one. I wanted to keep my factory units.

These are from a great quality "old time" shop. You can get cheaper, but the guy goes above and beyond.

I've been dealing with the same 2 shops since 1975, one old guy with the smaller shop has p***ed away. Both shops showed me what they do. They went through anything I brought in 100%, no short cuts, no comebacks. The older guy, he used to do my stock car starters that started, no matter how hot the engine got.

Thanks! This really sounds like the bendix spring from what I have been told. I have found the part. Should I just put it in, or just stop being cheap and drop it off at the shop?

Good point Bob but I think Id try brushes and bearings in and give it a shot. If that works then great. If it doesnt then have the pro look at the commutator. Just my thoughts thats all.
Packardwood if you have the spring throw it in. Cuz your likely right. Does the starter turn if you put juice to it on your work bench? nite nite

Yup it is in the car and turns the motor for like i second and then disengages and whines, does that every time since it has been giving me hell, I had only had the car a week then and drove it twice so I didn't know what its "normal" sound was. So no monsters huh....might try it! (DAMN I'M CHEAP! and think I can fix it all myself!) I will keep yall posted either way. Steve

You will probably get a much better job taking yours to a well established generator/starter shop than buying a reman from one of the discount auto parts stores. Typically, they do the "rebuild" as cheap as possible and fix the first thing they find wrong and quit there.

I have absolutely given up on DuraLast parts from Autozone, too many failures right out of the box. Had 3 power steering pumps for my daily driver from them and the most time I got out of any of them was 3 months. One died in 10 minutes and started whining like mad.

If you can find an old shop that will fix yours, do it.

I feel your pain, my daily driver came with a warranty PS pump from them, all they will do is keep replacing it, I'm on number 8 in 2 years, and you don't want to get me started on their electrical garbage

Autozone is just horrible in every respect. I went in today to get some flashlight batteries to prepare for the hurricane and there was no one to check me out. A guy was counting change there at one register and totally ignored me, and the only other guy in the store kept running in and out checking stuff on peoples cars in the parking lot. After about 15 minutes I was able to pay. If I didn't need the batteries I would have walked out.

When the 3rd and final power steering pump died that I got from them I made them refund my money and I went to AC Delco and bought one of theirs. It is still on the car and working great.

There's a place in marietta that did all of my non off the shelf stuff . . .

    BP Rebuilders.

Small-time shop, excellent work, 3 guys that work there are all gear heads and have pictures of customer's cars up on the wall when you walk in.

A couple of years ago they were in the $60-80 range to get a starter rebuilt . . . have since moved to the other side of Atlanta and haven't needed a starter or an alternator rebuilt in quite awhile.

they won't refund my money, I've tried, these are the same idiots who sold my neighbor a rebuilt alternator for his Ford Ranger, the mounting bolt holes looked like Bubba had hogged them out with a drill to fit something else, just complete junk, and their response was, it'll work fine that way, this was a 120 dollar alternator, my response was take this piece of #### back and refund the money. I got the guys next dorr at Oreilies to match the price and showed them the POS before I took it back, they couldn't believe they sold it to me , the casting should have been s****ped

yeah I have a place one town over that all they do is starters and alternators, and after looking in my old Motor's manual I just got, and the 8 pages on what is in the starter, it will be getting dropped off there on Monday. I will be sure to tell them the same thing I tell anyone who provides a skilled task for me....I will take "done right" over "done fast" every time!

I have long since put them on my **** list, I think the ONLY thing I have bought from AutoZone THIS YEAR was some fuzzy dice! In their defense, the fuzzy dice are numbered correctly, and are in fact, very fuzzy, so they are still good for that at least! lol

Some good advice I got from a fellow H.A.M.B.er the other day went a little something like this: If your parts store has more different types of floor mats and window tint, then they do old parts books lined up down the counter, well then you sir, go to the wrong parts store!

Back when I worked at an auto electric shop (high school job), the gear reduction Mopars cost more to fix than a "regular" starter, probably still do.
I can't say that I ever remember working on a Packard.
