Well you know, when you mix too much you have to do SOMETHING with it.

I think the chop was done in the US the guy I purchased from has a spunky wife who bought the car from Ebay a few years back. At the time I think it was named " The Butcher". Im going to rotisserrie her today. Im going to cut the rear window section out today and lay it at nicer angle. Then I have a fair bit of sheetmetal work to do. I really am going to try to get away with no fillers if I can. The rust that is on and around the chop is literally only where they Fucked with it. geeeez wish it was left alone to be done properly, the roof other than that is immaculate! I am pretty stoked cause its all hands on deck today :D I have hubby to help cause its Sunday yay and a couple of friends so today will be a productive day.

Oh I got a new steering column last night, tilt, chrome, includes indicators and I am keeping column gear shift. Remote power door looks so Im going to keep the smooth no handle look. As for gauges Im thinking Autometer Classic.

The only Dilemma now is paint scheme........ I bought her because of her Matte Black and Pin Stripes. After hours and hours I have come down to Either Candy Tangerine over Gold, Candy Apple Red over Black or Satin Black with Gloss Black over ghost Flames. Last one is my choice but because Im going all out on her now will it class her down?

Oh and while Im asking she is Desoto 11 tooth Grille and Ive been thinking Corvette 13 teeth....decisions decisions hmmmmmmmmmmm

Freaking multi-quote won't let me work! RadGirl, I think I love you AND your attitude. Do NOT let the SCWANZ's take you down. Show them that good ol' AUSSIE-TUDE and show them how it's done. Some guys just have a testosterone deficiency that makes them feel threatened when a girl (female, woman, wife, daughter, mom, aunt, sister, girlfriend, whatever you want to place in the appropriate spot) knows and SHOWS it. We both know a good retort to them is,"Piss off wanker!"

    You go girl!

She's still not on the rotisserie, I have other jobs to do this week so she gets left alone now until next weekend. It really is a terrible shame she had such a crappy start. I'm going to try and salvage the rear window section. So next task at hand is spending some time learning lead wiping :-/ I can see lots of burns coming my way!

Oh new plates on order bye bye MZKITY hello 49SLED. It was a hard decision but I think I'm losing the leopard printed cowhide look and going for either black or red leather so it just won't fit her anymore. Fresh look fresh plates.

I did order a new plate....... 49SLED which I'm pretty stoked about. :D

Shit. I did some questionable metalwork for sure, but that chop is on par with the worse ive ever seen.
If it was mine i'd consider a Carson style top. You got all my respect.
On a similar note im lookin for a thread from a german fella that saved a car in very similar, or worse, conditions. Gotta post the link up later on.

About the grille. If you really are down to choosing just between the 'vette and the Desoto i'd say 'vette. I love those grilles on almost anything. I'd use 2 put at an angle and joined togheter. Hope i xplained my self decently.
Paint....satin black is frowned upon here, i like it on some cars, and of course on projects. But a bangin straight sued black with gloss black flames is nice imo, just like the DeRosa 47 Cadi. Most people hate that car, but i think its bad ass.
I say it could work if done with some restraint.

This '49/50 is Lamborghini orange, which I would consider pretty close to a candy tangerine. The color is outstanding. I recently saw it oin the sunlight and you can't take your eyes off of it.

The Lambo colors are beautiful. I think they are pearls, or they have pearl in them.
Ive seen them live a few years ago at an hotel i was working at. I crawled all over them checkin them out throughly and remember how the color was pearlescent. Im guessing its spendy too.

Anyway, heres Oliver's thread. I have no idea if its finished or not, but im sure you'll find it intresting. PS-nevermind the bullshit, althou half of it has been erased

I have that orange on a Series 6 Mazda RX7. I thinks it's Muchelago Orange. I will post a photo of it. It does look really nice...... But I think I will look like a tool with my Rice Burner matching my hot rod :)

Actually I also have a flat tangerine mini truck. Yup I'm a tool already ;)

I would vote for the satin black with gloss black.....I did this on my OT '69 mustang and the satin with gloss black accents looks wicked as hell, everyone seems to like the bad-ass look. Your bodywork needs to be perfect, and even though mine is perfect, the car still has yet to win it's first trophy at any car show... people like glossy, shiny things...... this like for shine also drove me to buy the dull, as cast, wheels for my gasser pickup I'm building... no shine at all.... the wife claims I'm anti-social....LMAO

When I got her she was matte black and bad ass, with her crooked DeSoto teeth and all. I actually really liked it. I like the vette grill idea I might just have a play with that, as for colour........... I think I really so like the "satin" black (to please the haters) with gloss black flames but also with ghost flames airbrushed under the gloss? And Red pinstriping. Not sure yet but I will get a test panel painted first in case it looks shit. I have been reminded over and over how I am bastardising her with satin and de-valuing her....... But I can't see myself ever selling her so she's priceless to me already and as I keep pointing out...... I'm kinda White trash anyway :D

Keep doing what you do and let the haters hate! Love seeing fellow felines work on their own shit! Sending support from the dirty South!

  22. I see most of the HAMB formerly-boogered-up Mercury club has chimed in except for Mick. Best of luck at least the work you do increases it's value.

  23. Looks like you have a pretty good plan. Hope it all works out for you. I'm for saving ANY Mercury,no matter how bad it is. Matte black sounds good to me! Of course...i'm biased, haha.

Well I hope so cause geeeez Im in over my head (or so they all keep saying) but Im stubborn so I wont listen. Maybe if I lie to myself it wont be a huge task hahaha.

Few more issues Ive come across today. Front window was butchered but looked a bit out. I made a template of half that looked the best and flipped it and............ yeh waaaaaaaaaaaaaay off. Thats OK because Im rebuilding the front pillars anyway.

Need to make whole new Boot/trunk pan, door sills, Parcel shelf....well really anything sheetmetal related in the interior, roof and pillars. The Firewall is flimsy as and pretty ugly so need to make new one as well, Booster and Master look shit, so ordered new ones today. Still not sure if I will put in Cleveland or Windsor? I will suss that out next week.

But for now she's all braced and the rear window section is gonsky. Yup she'd make a pretty cool convertible but I will fight onwards toward a hard top coupe as she should be.

Anyway more photos for a chuckle.

What's to hate? You're taking a complete hack job of a chopped Merc and doing it properly.
I can't believe the state of your roof and that someone thought that a bucket of filler would solve the problem.
You have the determination to get her done right and sounds like you love the car warts and all, so it's only a matter of time until you're cruising in style.

Have to say that it's great to see build thread with some attitude and a lass with bottle and know how (more than I have for sure!). Keep the updates coming, I want to see the car finished.
