the challengers from the remake all went back where they came from ted stephans junkyard in georgia im not saying they are in the junkyard ,they are in storage except for the car pictured which is going to be left as you see it at floyd garrets (as filmed)

the original movie cars all went back to chrysler to be resold wouldnt be surprised if they were painted other colors and stuff and the dealers that got them probably were not told of the movie participation

because i am sure with as many mopar guys that are constantly beating the brush trying to find rare 1of 1 cars atn least one of the original movie cars would have surfaced by now

"Fate is the Hunter" 1964 screenshot. Based on the bestselling 1961 book by Ernst Gann, the author was so disappointed with the result that he asked to have his name removed from the credits. The "Consolidated Airways" jet aircraft used in the filming was one of two fabricated from DC-7(B) donors, the second was used to create the crash scene (on the beach). The wings were reportedly removed and reversed, a Boeing 707 nose cone along with "supersonic spike" were also added in order to achieve the appearance of a modern jet airliner. Modifications to the rear section of the aircraft included the addition of two nacelles to accommodate the simulated jet engines. A rear-mounted Boeing 707 spike-styled HF antenna isolator, and antenna were also added to the tail section. An area of the Twentieth Century Fox back lot was converted into the tarmac, taxiway, and runway seen in the film. Because of the fear of litigation, it was reported that no airframe manufacturer or airline was willing to cooperate in the production of the film, making these steps necessary.

From somebody who investigates plane crashes for a living I can tell you its hokey, but entertaining.

The engines are very close to those of a DC9 or any number of business jets, albeit a little lower. "High tails" were not in wide use in those days, so it kinda' makes sense to mount on the horizontal stabilizer (though that does throw them further off centerline than a T tail would permit. Have to be a strong one, however).

I like the previous shot, which nicely incorporates the thingy at Los Angeles International Airport. It's been eons since I saw the movie or read the book, so I don't recall if that was just an establishing shot to set a "modern" tone, or if the flight actually involved L.A. in the story.

I remember I had "urgings" for Suzanne Pleshette.

 

The only thing they used from the book was the title. Great book but no real story line. Just different things that happened to the author.

 

The complete airliner sat on the 20th Century Fox backlot for many years after that, also appearing in the "Crime Wave" episode of the Green Hornet TV series. The last known photos of it were from the mid-70s, taken by a Planet of the Apes fan who was shooting that movie's spaceship (they were posted on a site which has since been deleted; hope it's OK to post them):




By the way, I think this was a DC-6; looks too short to be a DC-7. The wings don't seem to be reversed, just had extensions added to look more like swept wings.

The miniature ships and P-40 fuselage were left over from Tora! Tora! Tora!.
