my homemade exhaust flame thrower

    Maybe its already posted somewhere on this forum ,but I wanna share my directions on how I made a exhaust flame thrower.
    I dont really think this will work on cars with catalytic converts.
    Cost is cheap too.
    Most important is if you have a 6 volt system it wont have enough voltage to open the solenoid but if you temporarily jump start your car from a 12 volt car/battery it will work .
    when your all wired up, hold down the gas pedal to about 4000rpms and push in the button and you will get flames.

    )How to install with a Relay.
    2)How to install with a 3way switch.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    1) Remove your Catalytic converter (s) (rarely, but some cars may work with out removing) in
    removing your CAT. you MAY no longer pass emissions tests.
    2) Make sure that your exhaust system is solid and has no holes anywhere along the system.

    Check list of Items you will need:

    The Relay method

    1) 1 Coil (if doing a single exhaust system)

    2) 1 Relay (recommended MR125 GP-Sorensen Relay, used in alarm systems)
    3) Several feet of good electrical wire color Green, Purple, Black, Red, and Yellow (wire for power
    should always be thicker, colors not necessary as long as you don't get confused.)
    4) 1 working sparkplug (or 2 if doing dual exhaust)
    5) An on/off push button switch (momentary recommended not needed if trying the 3way
    switch)
    6) Electrical tape
    7) Standard Ignition Cable (longest you can find)

    The 3 Way Switch method

    1) 1 Coil (if doing a single exhaust system)

    2) THREE Way On off ON switch
    3) Several feet of good electrical wire
    4) 1 working sparkplug (or 2 if doing dual exhaust)
    5) Electrical tape
    6) Standard Ignition Cable (longest you can find)

    A list of places you can find the needed items:

    1) Coil can be purchased at AutoZone www.autozone.com part number "C-819" or any old
    working coil can be used that matches the one in the diagrams.

    2) Relay can be purchased at AutoZone www.autozone.com part number "MR125" make sure
    the relay has the numbers 87, 87a, 86, 85, 30 on it, if it doesn't then you will need to know how that
    relay works.
    3) Wire can be purchased at Radio Shack or any electrical store colors do not need to match,
    but be sure not to mix them if you are using different colors. we will be using Purple, Red,
    Green, Yellow, Black for my explanation
    4) Sparkplugs Can be purchased at any auto store or you can use your old ones as long as
    they are not damaged and in working condition.
    5) On/Off Button and Black Tape Can also be purchased at Radio Shack.
    6) Ignition Cable is the wires that connect to your sparkplugs you can use old ones or buy new ones. If the length is not enough you can take two and cut and splice to make them long enough but you risk
    loosing quality electrical signal.
    Installing the System (w/Relay)

    1. Find a place for your relay. You can put it anywhere you like. (I put mine under the hood)

    2. Look for your car's coil, Here is a picture of mine. Yours will look different or may even be
    two square type boxes.
    3. Once you find it you will have to look for the negative wire on the coil. You will need to either cut
    this or disconnect it. (Check trouble shooting if you don't know which)
    4. Run a wire from your car's coil to where your relay will be located and connect it to the Green wire on
    the relay 87a.
    5. Take the wire that was going to the negative side on your coil and wire that to your relay on #30
    Yellow wire. (Simply put 30 and 87a will be reconnecting the wire that you cut on your car's coil.)
    6. Find a wire that gives power and connect it to the red wire #85 on the relay. Use a wire that gives
    power when the car is on or just connect directly to your + on your battery.

    7. Mount your Switch, one side to Black wire on relay #86 and the other to ground - on the car (Any
    constant - Negative contact or - on the battery)

    8. Mount your store coil in the trunk.

    9.Drill or find hole in your trunk, then drill a hole about 5 inches from the end of your muffler tip make sure the sparkplug fits and the hole is not to big. Screw in the sparkplug and connect the Ignition cable
    to the coil and sparkplug.
    10. Run a wire from your car battery (positive) to the coil in the trunk, positive side of the coil.
    11. Run the purple wire on the relay 87 to the rear coil, negative side.
    12. Check all connections if all is well. Start your car. Your done and ready to test.

    Installing the System (3Way Switch)

    1. Find a place for your switch.
    2. Follow Steps 2 and 3 from the Relay Install.
    3. Wire the wire that is going to your - Negative side on the car coil to the Center of the 3 way switch.
    4. Wire the top of the switch to your Car's Coil negative side.
    5. wire the bottom of the switch to the coil in the trunk negative side.
    6. Run a positive wire to the coil in the trunk from your battery.
    7. Connect the spark plug and install it in your exhaust.
    8. And your done. When you flip this switch to ON for trunk coil your engine will start to stall
    make sure you flip it back to main before the RPM's go under 1000.

    TESTING

    Make sure nothing is behind your car and that you are in a open area. Take the engine to about 5,000
    RPM and press and hold the switch, the engine should start to stall. *POOF*

    SHOOTING FLAMES!! Enjoy!
    TROUBLE SHOOTING
    1) No Flames?
    a. Try changing the wires around for the Green and Yellow on the relay box.

    b. Make sure the spark plug and coil work, use Step #4 in install instructions to test them.
    c. Make sure you have no Catalytic Converter.
    d. Make sure there are NO HOLES in your exhaust system.
    2) Trouble starting the car?
    a) You did something wrong on the wiring with 30 and 87/87a on the relay, Green and Yellow
    on the control box. Double check the wires from start to finish make sure they are securely
    connected and not cut anywhere and wired correctly. Try switching 87 with 87A.
    3) Finding the Negative on your Coil
    The easiest way to do this is to take the coil you got from the store and connect 2 wires to it.
    a. One on the negative/One on the positive.
    b. Connect the ignition wire to the coil and to the sparkplug and place the sparkplug near something
    metal (turbo or something)
    c. Now take the wire that is connect to the positive side of the coil and connect it to the battery +.
    d. The negative side you will use to find what wire in your car's coil is the negative wire.
    e. Start the car and take the negative wire from the store coil and touch each one of the wires on your
    car's coil till you see that the spark plug is firing.
    (You may need to splice into some of the wires to get contact) Once you've found it, cut engine off.
    Label this wire and cut it.
    ***DO NOT HOLD THE SPARK PLUG WHILE DOING THIS UNLESS YOU LIKE THE FEEL OF ELECTRIC SHOCK***

    You may get FLAMED for this thread. However I think they are cool and will be doing a set on my 54 chevy. You probably just saved me a few bucks thanks. The best part is its an easy to follow diagram and you gave part numbers. Thanks man.
     
  3. hey man nice post, like the diagram.
    only saw one problem with the way you have the flame thrower coils wired, they are hot/12 volts all the time. this would cause them to overcharge and burn up because they are not firing the plugs and releasing the energy. you could easily fix this with an additional relay. didnt want you to burn up those new coils!

    Flamed? any auto store should have the relay ,for the plug i used a plug with the long thread and after drilling the spark plug hole about 5 inches from the end of the tail pipe I welded on a nut to screw the plug into. for all the wiring i used 14gauge.

    Subject matter is questionable.
    I'm not so sure I like the 5000 rpm free rev .

    The old way was to just pull the choke with a plug and coil in the tail pipe. Not throwers more like oozers & paint burners.

    How far do these come out of the tailpipe?

    Actually not. When he pushes the button, the relay disconnects the distributor from the engine ignition coil and connects it to the two flamethrower coils. You are correct in that there is always 12 volts on those coils, but they do not have a ground until the relay is activated by the pushbutton.

    Unless you're injecting fuel to the exhaust from another source, blowing fire with the engine running, you're diluting the oil on your cylinder walls, which allows more wear.........I put a different home-made setup on my car and use it VERY rarely as a result. Each time you rev the engine and cut the ignition you suck in fuel which rinses out the oil instead of being burned in the cylinder. Granted it is fuel vapor which shouldn't saturate the walls and most of the oil should be below the piston rings, the effect may be minimal but I can't afford to fix the damage I made over time because the fire is neat....

    Intresting. And nice diagram. Ive heard this way of doin it b4 but never grasped it.
    Your diagram made it super easy to get.

    Years ago i wanted to do it without the relay, straight sparkplug to coil and coil to battery with a button in between. Whats the drawback of doin it this way?

    Am I missing something on this setup or 12v straight to the coil/spark plug in the exhaust? What causes it to spark repeatedly? If I'm understanding this right, you'll only get one spark and the coil will be discharged. That's why points in the distributor have to open and close. It recharges the coil between each spark plug wire as it rotates. Looking forward to hearing how this works!
