I am curious how many have raced their cars at the track. It would be cool to see some pics with the combo and et they run. Thanks , Ron
Im a hot rodder who went racing. Have a blown BBC bucket and the start of a FED project. Best run in bucket with the blown 454 was 10.2@131. Engine had 627hp on the dyno and car weights 2700lbs with me in (both me and car are overweight). Building new blown 540 that should get well over 900hp so I can get deep into the 9s
There is an ET thread floating around here somewhere but I couldn't find it... I make maybe 50 passes or so a year including a few at the HAMB Drags at Mo-Kan Dragway in Joplin Mo where she has run in the high 10s. She runs a bit better than that here at my home track (6.90s/105mph in the 1/8) and I drive her every single day. She runs a 389inch Pontiac with a 671 @ 10# of boost. See ya, -Abone. PS. You got a pic of yours?? If you dig racing, you should DRIVE your hot rod to the HAMB Drags in August. You will dig it, I promise.
I recently started running my model a. I have about 30 passes in it so far over the last 2 seasons. I haven't done any 'real' racing yet because I'm still just having fun trying to get the most out of my setup. It sure is fun tinkering with it at the track. I really enjoy it. I started out going 14.2 @ 99 last year and I'm down to 12.6 @ 108 as of my last outing. I really wish more people on this site would talk about their setups and what they run. I've always felt that drag racing was the purest form of our hobby. After all, the original idea of putting a larger engine in a smaller car was for one purpose - speed! So go race your hotrods!!! I have a whole thread about my experience here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=607595 Here's my junk at our local track (Island Dragway) I have to say I'm awfully proud of this thing running deep in the 12's on an open 2.79 rear and 28" 235 tires. haha
Holy*****...you run in the 12s with those tires??? Must be the PONTIAC power. See you at the HAMB Drags next year??? -Abone.
Yes haha. I have admired your car the whole time I've been on the HAMB. Poncho power for sure. I have never mounted slicks on this car. I actually ran a 12.6 with 225 tires once. All that low end torque overcomes the tall gear I guess. Not sure about the HAMB drags. I'm gonna do the Jalopy Drags at Beaver Springs this year, we'll see what happens.
Mine is a 63 Sport Fury. Its a street car I drive to the track. Runs on 92 pump and I race it like I drive it through the full exh. It is a 440 done to look like a 426 Max Wedge other then the crossram. I use Indy EZ heads and a 4.15 crank. At 3700 lbs it has run 10.70's @ 124.49 so far. I think it has at least 10.50's if I ever get around to some serious tuning. Ron
You need a WAAAAY bigger air cleaner. If that is really the air cleaner you run on a 10.70 pass, then a 14X3 K&N will get you to 10.50. I spent some dyno time on air cleaners....HUGE gains to be won or lost.. Nice car, see you at Mo-Kan in August. -Abone.
here i picture from last year pontiac catalina 1963 best time 1/8 is 9,56 4-speed 330 389 engine ken sweden
Still testing best et this combo 11.10 best mph,121.34 pumpgas 383/4-speed,5.38s 3300lbs. gets faster with every try.....many more changes comin...ten-os is the goal.....someday....thinkin more inches....
I have ran the old truck, a couple of time as year for the last 12 years. It is not very fast as its best pass ever was a 13.1 but I have sure enjoyed every run down the strip. Best part of going to the drag strip is driving to the strip and driving home afterwards. I always look around and see who drives the car they race. Just behind the old truck in this picture is a blown Willys coupe owned by "Fang" here on the HAMB. He drives to the strip and back home every time he runs. John
Here's my 550 coupe which I race in our Gasser Racing Series. 371" Olds with 6 Holley 94's. Best 1/8 mi.run was 6.99 / 98mph at Thompson, O.
Just tried it for the first time last week in the Off Topic car. I suggest everybody does this. Even if it's in the 1/8 mile. It was a lot of fun. I blew out my head gaskets and did everything wrong at the track, but it was worth it. Get yourself a rule book (I found one on line, search NHRA rule book, it's free but a coupe years old, PDF format, open and print basic tech.) Follow tech, the track official will be WAY happier if you're aware of the rules. Get a up to date helmet and go break something. I'll be running the Willys when it's ready. I'll probably never build a car that can't show a timeslip. How's that for an endorsement?
Im crew chief on this car, also had the quickest pass at GG hot rod of the year with my 33 coupe in 2006. http://www.nmcadigital.com/2012/07/15/sunday-notebook-rt-66/
My cars OT so no pic but with an Olds 468, 3300 lbs, 3.42 gears and through the mufflers does the eighth in 8.2.
My 55 runs a blown 454, it's pretty mild....best et was 11.25 at 122 at Speedworld near Phoenix. I drive it to the strip, I drove it to the HAMB drags a couple weeks ago and ran mid 11s. Still working on the rear suspension. Mill is an old LS-7 with the old TRW blower pistons (over 100k miles on them), Comp hydraulic roller cam around 230 at .050, .547 lift, 3000 stall switch pitch converter in the TH400. 2.75 gears in the 9" for the drive, 3.70s for racing, but I ran the quickest times with it using 3.25s and shorter drag radials. Heavy car....it's comfortable...it's not a race car. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xmL-QSAl1bQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I dont run it with that one. I just put it on for an indoor car show so people could see more of the carb. This is the one I run normally. Ron
Here is a pic of my buddies super sweet 67 Stang. I built the eng in it but he wont race it. He says if it goes down the track he will have me drive it. Its a 460 Ford eng that I put a roller cam in and had to fix an oil pressure problem. Its really a sweet car. It should run 10's. Ron
I have one but I did not put in in yet. The rules say you have to have one with the battery in the trunk which I do. But when I go to local test & tunes they never even check for it. I am going to put it in though because it is safer and it is the rule. Ron
The rule says if you relocate the battery, you need an external kill switch, that disconnects the battery and also stops the engine. I'm paraphrasing, you need to get the rule book to make sure you do it right. There are also rules about having a firewall separating the trunk from the pass compartment, or else enclosing the battery. also about how it's anchored to the car. Get a rule book....do it right the first time. Or do like I do and keep the battery in the original location, it saves a lot of hassle, and my car still runs 11s that way.
when I had my Speed Shop back in the Day 63-75 I ran a BBC in a 64 Chevelle SS putting out 850 hp Dyno tuned First out I ran a 11.3 at a National Champion event and was Beaten by the Record holder by 1/100 of a Second by late 74 I did 3 9.87 runs Back to back & blew the Engine on the Last run I ended up selling my Car in 78 to my Pit Crew which to this Day the Car is still around Fully Lettered in Astoria, Queens, NY Dom
Been racing with my family since I was 9. Started in '63 with a D500 Dodge, then '64 with a max wedge, then '68 with a hemi 990 car, into pro stock with a hemi duster, and SS/D hemi GTX, on to drag bikes and a turbo nitrous top fuel/funnybike. Just getting back in the groove again with a '72 Scamp w/ an Indy stroker, and a '66 Dart stretched nose exhibition match racer (early funnycar). Mopar or no car...
