Old plane spits oil all over the shoebox, another paint job bites the dust...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sparkydeluxe, Sep 2, 2012.

  1. Since the day I saved up enough money to buy a cobalt blue metalflake paint job for my first car, I've had some pretty ****py luck with paint.

The day after picking that car up from the body shop a m***ive hailstorm ruined it for good. Years down the road I tried my luck at having another car painted, with the paint not even fully cured a basketball hoop owned by the neighbors next door fell on the roof and ruined that job, and then once again on my third attempt, a drunken friends Honda CRX left a 6 foot creese down my car as he attempted to leave my downhill driveway with a wide open door, parked next to my freshly painted t-bird.

Yes me and paint have a tumultuous relationship. So over the years I've downgraded significantly, from that first spendy over the top paintjob, to now a thin cheap coat of spray bombs on my current car. Covering it in one color, and costing me roughly $40. My shoebox "paint job" doesn't even have a season of use under it.

Which is a good thing as it seems the curse of me and fresh paint has yet to be lifted.

So yesterday me and the family headed out to the airport for a small car/air show the city puts on. Only ended up with about 8-10 cars (it's a small town, you take what you can get), and I ended up parking my shoebox on the end of the line nearest to the airport hanger. Left the show for a bit to get food and hit yard sales with friends, and I come back to find oil spit on my car. Hard to make it out in the pictures what oil spit actually is (if you've followed your buddy with an engine leak to a show you've probably seen this on your hood), but oil spit is just splashes of oil that try as you might will never fully come out of primer. The shoebox is COVERED in it. Top to bottom, back to front, every square inch! Windows, chrome, interior, everything!

Turns out a 70 year old plane with a small oil leak was handing out rides all day within feet of the shoebox. From the looks of it the oil was getting spit from the plane just far enough to hit my car, and a small bit on the white truck next to em. Had no idea they were going to do that, and to date this may be the oddest reason why I yet again have a ruined paint job to add to my collection.

Unfortunately after putting some time into it at the car wash, the spots just aren't going to come out before the paint comes off. So this coat of paint is toast. Now I'm not complaining or angry in the least as it was a cheap temporary job that I needed to re-do anyways. It's just the idea that hail, basketball hoops, CRX Hondas, and now World War II planes have all taken out my fresh paint jobs, it's just hilarious to me! As hard as it may be to hear, curious if anyone else has a story behind a brand new paint job ruined by unfortunate cir***stances.

That ****s. I feel you on the paint luck. My toyota was always cursed. Whenever it had a shoot lined up with Courtney it would get hit hard. It it finally got shot the article was called 'truly cursed'. Just roll with it. It will eventually become funny. But that is a neat plane.

Wash it with Simple Green, it'll probably be fine.

That's a DC-3, worked on them years ago. The oil cooler was probably leaking like they often did, though they bleed oil all over tne place no matter what. Gallons of oil

I jad an O/T pickup, my first bew truck. Long story short in Florida hurricanes tear **** up. My truck took a hell of a beating busted windshield, p***enger mirror tore off, dents in every panel. Took 3 months before it got fixed. Day after I got it out of the body shop I hit some ***hole standing in the middle of the highway at 4 in the of morning. I slid into the median and took out about 10 metal poles. Rippled the hell out the right side. Cobalt blue paint was ruined. The ******* I hit was lucky he had a few bumps and bruises bit otherwise was ok.

  11. Oil spit and weld scars add character!
Primer is like a sponge by the design of the stuff.
It sort of ****s itself to the metal and ****s in what ever you put on top, paint is best but it will **** water, dirt , and oil too.

    Damn that's some bad luck

Like 31Vicky said , primer is like a sponge & soaks it up & holds it . Paint put over it will not adhere right :( . I'd try Simple Green cut with water to see if it helps to pull the oil out .

That is some bummer luck for sure ...

Oil would literally soak into primer. Soap and water isn't going to do squat.

In reponse to the OP, I feel your pain. I've played with the idea of painting my T for quite a few times. But something always steals the money. Just before summer, a shop offered to paint it for $600. 3 weeks later, the ****** went out. 2 months ago, with money in hand, my engine let go. So, I've just convinced myself that it'll remain in white gelcoat for a long time.

Gloom ,despair and agony on me, deep dark depression, excessive mysery. If it weren't for bad luck, i'd have no luck at all, etc, etc, etc, Ya might spray the spots with some Thrust and then blot the oil up, or then again the Ether might kill the patient. Try a small hidden area first. With your luck ya definitely don't need an expensive paint job. Good luck!

**** I'd have the pilot sign the dash. That Airplane earned the right to pee wherever it wants. You've got the coolest story on why there's minimal spots on the car. But if you really want ot erase them try Comet in a can and a foam scrubby. Use the soft side.

oil spit on primer. what's underneath?

I'd say don't ever spend money on paint for that car without going to bare metal.

sorry about your primer. good thing it was oil and not bullits she spit on your car. someone should have a quick fix for your little delemma. cheap inexpensive paint jobs do hurt less when messed up

  21. you could always go the other route.............. lol get a gallon from the old girl and rub it in like wax till the spots dissapear i bet the water shure would bead up for a while ..... in all reality sorry for your pain and good luck with a cure

  22. You win the cigar Sir! C-47 Dakota. It's like a Harley, changes it's own oil a little bit at a time.

  24. First... I'm sorry to hear about your painted car luck... mine is with Red painted cars!

Uhhh... if old planes don't leak they tend to crash... it means that they are out of oil!

You can tell the guys that work on the "Old Birds" by the stains on their flight suits.

I suggest that next time you should park it closer so that he can complete the job... that way the whole car would be covered evenly and it'll never rust!

The guy that owns that plane is a friend of mine! That is a C49 not the usual C47. It has especially leaky Wright R1820 radial engines on the "Southern Cross". Man that ****s about the paint. My truck is painted olive drab and I have the same problem with oil.

  26. Having a hard time seeing the right side p***enger door that the C-49 had whereas the C-47 had left side door. C-49 very rare bird with only 3 known Ser. Numbers 41-7685 41-7689 and 41-7694

If it was painted properly the oil would have wiped off, or required washing with dawn at the worst.

  28. Well, your right, it's a C-49J, but you knew you were right all along didn't you. Rare bird indeed.

  29. Great to hear more about the plane. Kind of an honor my car was baptized by it. Like I said I really got a laugh out of it just cause if the past luck i have with paint jobs, and though I do very appreciate it, pity of any kind isn't necessary. Now i'd be lying if I didn't say that hail storm on my first car years back didn't just piss me off, but since then priorities changed and I really don't care. This was a cheap paint job and if it hadn't of been the plane to damage it, than it would have been kids having fun with nail polish or something. Things happen, no big deal.

C-47, C-49, Dakota are all military designations. The airplane is a Douglas DC-3
