some states now do this, there was a huge complaint about it and people screaming it's not fair, but driving is a privilege and not a right, if you are not able to safely drive anymore, you don't need to be on the road, not being mean or cruel, but that's a simple fact. this ought to be the law in all states, it's not fair to risk the lives of everyone when someone is not able to drive anymore, this would also take a huge burden off of families who are the ones who often have to do this, who wants to take away mom or dads license? I haven't had to get to that point yet, my dad is still very well able to drive at 70 but some people aren't that lucky, it's got to be a terrible decision, I was a kid when they had to take away my grandmothers license, she would do things like drive on the wrong side of the road, forget stop signs etc, just her getting old

it's not that, some people get to a certain age and can't drive, some people drive fine until the day they die, thats why the retest, if you are a good driver still nothing to worry about, if you don't have the reflexes etc to drive any longer, it's time to give it up , it's never a good thing to have to, but sometimes it has to happen, on the teens texting they p***ed a lot of new laws about that, I believe if they get caught they lose their license until they are 18 or something. No place for staring at your phone driving down the road., teens have started doing something that I think is really cool now, they are appointing a designated texter, he sits in the p***enger seat and handles all texts while the driver concentrates on the road. maby there is hope for this generation, kids came up with this on their own

  3. I agree In past 60 and have a CDL I feel I should be retested every time my Licence is renewed. I see 80 + years olds driving a motor home and towing a boat or car and that can barely walk hear or see. they should be tested often be required to have a CDL & health card. I had a drunk 82 year old woman cross the center line and hit me head on totalled out a very nice 66 chev pickup. It was a hard fight but i finally got $2000 and kept the truck. Her Insurance only wanted to pay $380. OldWolf

my grandma is slowly losing her mind. my dad reported her to the DMV so they brought her in to do a test to which she failed. she pitched a HUGE fit so they let her retake it again, but her instructor for the 2nd test was a friend of hers so she p***ed.

back on topic, glad no one got hurt and your Olds isn't any worse.

I didn't go off on the guy bad not nearly as bad as I would have if he was a lot younger. At first he claimed he didn't do the damage to my car until I pulled out my phone and showed him pic taken last week . Then he told the cop the sun was in his eyes. First of all if you can't see what's coming you just pull out and see what happens? Secondly the sun was to his left I was to his right before he pulled out. After I called his insurance company I find out he has another open claim from another accident.

That was pretty much the way it was with my Dad, he p***ed on at 91. But as the years went on he gradually called for a ride more and more often. If I didn't happen to be available he'd take a cab. I tried hard to always be there when he wanted a ride, but we travel a bit, so that wasn't always possible. He was pretty good at shrinking his driving range on his own, getting down to only going places where he was very familiar with the roads and the traffic levels.

I hope my judgment is as good about this stuff as I get older (66 now).

    Now he's an "old ****".
The HAMB sure has changed. As if young and old alike don't have and cause accidents.

Sorry as hell to hear about this, but I suppose it is a chance we all take when we make the decision to drive and enjoy our cars. My more-door duece has a pristine, rust-free body and I'd have a heart attach if someone hit it, but the desire to enjoy it outweighs my fear of it getting damaged. Hope the old gentleman's insurance does right by you.

one time I was coming back from Valdosta, all two lane country road, got stuck behind a car that was all over the road, they would cross the center line, weave back to the right, almost go off the road, and back across the center line, they were nearly hit a dozen times head on, the entire time my wife was on the phone with the state patrol, they never did show up, all I could see was two little gray heads sticking up, they weaved into a gas station, so I pulled in too, it was two little old ladies, I asked if she was ok, and she said "well my friend can't drive since she's sick, so I'm driving, but I'm not supposed to because I can't see" they got back on the road and left, Now this had gone on for 30 minutes, the state patrol had the exact location, their car description, their tag number, and they NEVER showed up, I thought for sure they were going to die, every time they would be on the wrong side of the road I would lay on the horn and this seemed to wake her up, these two nearly hit four tractor trailers head on, retest them, I asked the person at the state patrol if I should do anything to stop them from getting back on the road and she said let them handle it, which of course they didn't

I'm only 64 but have had a lot of concussions that are finally catching up with me. I still race some but really, anything much faster than about a 10.0 second car is getting to be too much for me. I hate it, but I know that my time to stop driving is coming sooner than later.

It took 40 minutes for the cops to show up. The sheriffs station and the troopers barracks are only a 5 minute drive in either direction.while waiting the guy told me he had an appointment to get to. I told him he would have to wait but I didn't ask him if it was with the eye doctor.

Some cars get to a certain age and they just aren't safe any more, just wait until the great power decides to make that decision for you too.

Who is this great power that grants me the "privilege" to drive?

  14. thank you! it was the right thing to do , as her abilities had diminished considerably. but her 88 year old brother is still driving , farming and flying and is in excellent condition. i wouldn't hesitate for a second to drive or fly with him. everyone ages differently , so each situation is different. i'm sure some day HIS kids will have to pull the keys

the same people who give you your license, if something happened to me and I couldn't safely drive anymore I wouldn't want to risk others lives, this is not an easy thing to have to do for anyone, but if someone retakes the test and the instructor decides they simply can't drive anymore, then it's not safe for them to be on the road ,this has nothing to do with the age of the car, but the fact that some people simply lose the ability to drive

I know someone who does driving tests for the DMV and he has told me he hates to revoke an elderly persons license, he gives them every chance he can, but some people get to the point where they simply can't drive, the bureaucrats you refer to are regular people, and i'm sure they don't enjoy telling someone they aren't safe on the road any longer, it's a touchy subject

I am a firm believer in everyone having to get retested every time they renew their license.

This thread is getting way OT, but I hate going down there and dealing with those ****ers just to renew....imagine having to retake the test.

this is why I won't even answer a cell phone while driving, they are working on laws about them, with a hands free kit under 40 bucks and new phones that work by voice, there is no reason to even have to pick up your phone while driving, the manufacturers have voluntarily made the phones safer to prevent accidents and people refuse to use the built in features

When I totaled the Dodge in my avatar,I went though my ins co.They told me I could go through his as he was charged with the accident, but I decided to use mine rather than argue with his....much easier, plus he was only insured for $10,000 the minimum liability....mine paid $11,500, what the car was worth.

My ins then subrogated to recover THEIR money.

My Mom still drives well at 92,but I do road tests with her frequently to monitor.

I think when people use their phones to surf and reply, the phone automatically adds this to the post or e-mail......a forced add that the folks may not even know happens, and can't do anything about if they do (unless not using phones for surfing the net)

One thing to consider, the freedom of being able to go and come as you please, is usually the worst thing an elderly person can give up. If more people didn't abandon the older person in thier lives, giving up the keys wouldn't be so hard. Unfortunately, taking the keys is the first step leading to an old folks home for a lot of the elderly.

OK, If that is true I'll accept it. If they are adding it to impress others they aren't impressing me. Bob
