Don't know if this has been posted but I looked at this a few years back - owned at that time by a Church Minister....

Weasel, That 42 blue coupe above is fantastic. My type of car and my type of color. Would not want to change that one but a version like it , less chrome, more motor (6.4 hemi 392") ATI 6 speesd automatic, and so forth. I look forward to all the new pic's and info every day ,THANK YOU ALL ONCE AGAIN.

Whilst I realise that the running board (pictured above) is not stock please can one of the resident Willys experts tell me why a bottom rocker panel / sill appears (in same place as this running board) on some pics of Willys's and not on others. Were they simply a removeable bolt on panel that most people/racers chose to remove... or is it something that changed sometime between 37 - 42 or is it a difference between models, i.e Deluxe or Standard etc? Of all the pics I've studied over the years it appears that some Willys Coupes have a panel/sill beneath the door whilst others simply do not? Is this the case or am i just hallucinating?

The other Willys mystery to me (and i'm sure there is again a simple explanation to this) is the quarterlight (wind wings?) side windows that are shown on some Coupe pics (like the blue coupe pic above) whilst others have one-piece side glass? Now i don't mean the bolt on wind deflectors i've seen which I believe are a very rare accessory. I simply mean the actual quarterlight glass windows that some Willys seem to have been equipped with whilst others do not. Again, is this just something that appeared on the deluxe models as opposed to the standard models or was it a model year thing?

My understanding is that all coupe doors are the same (except for the oval/circular door handle openings) so that must mean that there is no additional vertical metal post on doors with quarterlight windows. Therefore is it a bolt-on metal post fits between the windows, a clip-on post or again am I just plain hallucinating?

Come to think of it, i dont think its just the Coupes is it, I'm sure i've seen Willys pick-ups with and without these extra windows too??

  14. 3 day,
Weasel can better tell you the years, but rocker sills came on the '40 models and up, as that is when standard running boards became an option. Some '40 & '41 brochures list running boards as optional, but they were standard up through '39. The rocker sills bolted on in the same place as the boards...all pickups kept the running boards. I have seen a smaller (narrower) running board on '42 sedans...possibly on the coupe too. Drag cars often stripped all extra weight off where they could, so many removed them.
Wing windows were available on 40-42 models also. Possibly earlier models, but I have never seen them. You are right, sedans had them too...the inside the door window channels were different due to the shorter length of the window glass, but it still needed to slide up the guide inside the door. As you said, it was probably a deluxe option. There is a 40 standard coupe here locally, and it has the full glass, no wing windows, but the 2-toned patena 40 coupe on this page is from Minnesota, is a deluxe model, but doesn't have wing windows. As with Willys, nothing is unusual.

g-willys is right - no absolutes with Willys. Rockers sills are the same for 1940-1942 but the stainless trim is deeper on the 441/442. 1941/42 sedans are a breed of their own. Coupe specific Wind wings are extremely rare and were an accessory on 1939 and 1940 coupes only. 1940 Sedans had quarter vents (first year for these) like the 1941 and 1942 models. 1940 sedan doors are substantially different from 1937-40 coupe doors. 1937-1939 sedans had a wind wing accessory option that is different than the coupe version. The two do not interchange. I would post photos but Photobucket currently has server problems....

On the subject of rocker sills in 1940 the Speedway (standard model) did not have stainless trim but the De Luxe version did. I believe the same is true for 1941/42 models....

those are accessory wind wings right?, but do you think the wing windows (quarter-light windows) was an option that could be specified instead of the full side glass?

On a different note, does anyone know where this picture was taken, is this a museum or a private collection? Love this coupe. Apologies if it has appeared on this thread already, but i found it elsewhere on the interwebthingy

The quarter windows were not a factory option in 1940 for the coupe - as I mentioned previously, the sedan doors are substantially different from the coupe doors in 1940.

The photo you showed is from the private Lorenzen Collection in Rancho Dominguez, CA and I may have taken it. The stock coupes above are also from the same collection....

Here are some more photos of the primered 441 coupe - the boss's first Willys from his high school days I think - it raced at Lions back in the day....

Heres a stock 41 I saw drive into a show in NJ last week! I was blown away at this car, bone stock with the orig 4 banger still in it. Underside was super clean as well. The people that knew what this was were going nuts, everybody had their cell phone out when they walked away. Its not for sale.
