Go Kart with an 8HP Briggs. We're taking it to the Nostalgia Nats this weekend at Beaver Springs (PA). Hopefully we'll see some HAMBers there. TD

That Chevelle is an absolute hoot. It and that Nova take away decades for me.

This was a wonderful era to be growing up in and watching all the run what you bung match races.

God I miss those days when drag racing was really about drag racing and not all electronic stuff.

After reading Magnante's book a couple times, I find myself daydreaming about how to construct a traditional run watcha brung car using common current day salvage parts without the need to booger an ever increasingly rare and expensive older car.
I know it can be done, but the gray cells are not quite as fertile anymore.
Any threads or sites out here on the net' anywhere that could get me rolling again? Tom S.

Do like Steve did and use a Ford Fairmont...nobody is going to flame you for cutting up one of these...

I don't want to copy a car and I'm not getting many ideas for a present day fwd car. I suppose with enough $$,$$$.00 I could start with a hemi Dart or a Thunderbolt or something. But then, that's been done too. :)
    Thanx; Tom S.

  27. Why do you want to do a modern FWD car? There are plenty of RWD cars, though not too many two-door "sedans" like back in the day. I think that more boxy bodies (like the Fairmont) look better altered than say a Taurus. I think a new Mustang done up like the Long Gone in Graverobber's post #1438 would be cool.

I doubt you'd be able to find a late-50s, early-60s car that hadn't been altered at one point in time!

For me, it'd have to be dirt cheap and fwd cars are about all you can find before a recycler. Haul away stuff like we used to use back when we had no $$ is still the name of the game today (even more so).

" I think that more boxy bodies (like the Fairmont) look better altered than say a Taurus. "
And this is what has me stuck. Fox bodies can even be a little hard to find. In the late 60's and early 70's, 2dr sedan Falcon, Fairlane, Comet, Valiant Dart and even Chevelle or Nova wrecks were not worth the price to haul away. There were enough around the country side to make a dirt track car if it took 10 of them. If it were not for scarab non professional racers, those cars would probably have oxidized away where they sat.
I can't recall how many tri-5 Chevrolets I've seen go to scrap because they were 'too' popular and so many people had one that all looked the same. But what do we have today to start from with nothing more than hand tools an arc welder and a torch?

I agree on the Mustang idea. One might even do Gunters car out of a New Beetle, but I'm thinking about how we used to race weekends by working during the week for minimum wage.
I completely agree on this point also; It's difficult envisioning a straight axle Tarus doing a burnout.
What we need is younger minds than mine at work here. Tom S. in Tn.

I've often thought of turning a modern Honda into a gasser style rwd, with side by side 4 cyls mated to a Toploader 4spd and a straight axle up front...

I'd love to drop an FE in a 2-dr Fairmont and add a teardrop hood on it... :D:D:D
