W.T Grant's filed for bankruptcy and was liquidated in 1976. At that time it was the second largest bankruptcy in US history. The most apparent cause of the bankruptcy was the company's decision to extend store credit to all customers, with no attempt made to assess the customer's ability to repay. Each of the company's stores had credit managers who authorized the opening of store credit accounts, which resulted in many customers having credit accounts with more than one of the company's stores. In addition, there existed no centralized control or record-keeping of store credit accounts which resulted in noncollectable accounts.

isn't it funny, in the minds of the people in the late fifties there was nearly everything manageable from the drivers seat, the whole future could be handled at the wheel. ... and today it's the same with the internet, tell me one thing (except making physical love) you couldn't do while sittin in front of the screen..

i, for my case, wish me back the drive-in-theaters. you're out there with pals in your car, some cold beverages, and after the movie you mix up with some chicks or listen live to some rockabill or whatever. try this at home?

Here we have a glimpse back into what appears to have been an average service garage, back in the late 1920′s. It is known to be Charles Metzger’s Garage, and it was located in Wapakoneta, Ohio. It can also be seen in four enlargements on The Old Motor.

Andrew Riker, a engineer who built his first car from two bicycles in 1894, showed what could be done on this date in 1900, driving his Riker electric to a new speed record of 29 mph over a five-mile course in Rhode Island. Riker would go on to build several successful electric and gasoline cars, eventually serving as the first head of the Society of Automotive Engineers. (And yes, in this model, the driver sits outside the passenger compartment, just like a good carriage man would.)
