The big V-6 was a 305. Sometime, somewhere, some determined yet demented soul has probably tried to make a performance engine out of it. At least its different.

The 302 was also a truck engine, but it was an Inline six, 4" bore by 4" stroke; they got raced back in the '50's, and they were running on the salt flats last month. Not to be confused with the 305 boat anchor. ;)

    Later, Kinky6

For all you inline engine lovers...a SESCO four banger....chevy V8 cut down the middle!...Ron Hoettels (spelling?) developed it in Milwaukee. This engine won a lot of Midget features!

Here is a twelve port on a Chevy 292 that is a 9,000 RPM runner with fantastic results.

Ardun was aftermarket stuff as stated before, Difference was it worked well.

Looking for aftermarket Chevy stuff that worked well, many generations of aluminum heads, but theres no standout as the 1 that made the huge impact, most were very good, but the aftermarket continued to improve.

Vintage stuff, Brownsfield heads would be a good find. Arias hemi heads were cool but didnt dominate like the Ardun conversion did.

Any of the factory rare stuff mentioned in the thread is cool and one off, still doesnt hold up to most of the aftermarket SBC stuff out there today.
A set of stock vortecs will outperform the majority of aftermarket heads from 1960's to mid 1980's

Ive got a set of "Pontiac" nascar heads from early 90's, they were outlawed by Nascar and made major power. Very cool, but theres off the shelf stuff that will out perform them now. still not vintage.

They are not really rare, but any good GM starter MOTOR with a good battery should get you down the 1/4 mile. Not fast, but maybe that far!
As for Chevy engines, a good running Corvair unit would be rare in your 52 Chevy.
Even more rare and a V-8 engine, around 1916-1917 GM came out for a short time with one. Be the only one on your block.
Here's a serious note. A friend about a mile away actually put a late Ford flathead in his 1950 Chevy. After a lot of hassle and giggles from others he swapped it with a SBC. Not a bad idea really! But you won't have the only one on the block then. Still dependable and way better on fuel than a big block.
Of course that starter motor doesn't burn any fuel! Hook it up to a solar panel or wind generator and have the rarest vehicle at the car show!;)

How about a 6.2 or 6.5 diesel? Not rare in the big sense but pretty scarce in a rod. Great fuel mileage too.
Or better yet, make a gassed from one. They have a wonderful over square bore/stroke ratio. I don't think it would be that hard to do and it would dam sure be a rarity and a head scratcher for onlookers. Just cut down the pistons, have a cam ground, devise a crank trigger for ignition and build an intake, simple.

Yep! I think there's about 5 that known to exist... Smokey Unick(sp) was in charge of doing some extensive research with those cylinder heads...

I've been trying to find info on the 315 horse 283... Some guys on here told me those heads were only "over the counter items" and not factory installed...
I do believe that those heads were recalled due to porosity issues... Some folks just kept them... The lucky ones did anyway...

If you are talking about the 4V Weslake heads, I am not aware that Smokey Yunick had anything to do with the testing but I would love to hear more about it if he did - information on these is extremely tough to come by. The heads were developed under the auspices of Vince Piggins of GM by Harry Weslake in the U.K. Originally 100 pairs were meant to be made and were to be marketed by Don Yenko. In the event only ten pairs were cast - four were destroyed in testing - and three complete engines were built up. Racer Brown had one and did the camshaft development. Vels Parnelli had one and Bruce Crower had a pair of heads but not a complete engine.

I believe Bob Evans bought the Crower heads and had an engine built up for his Deuce, Speedy Bill has two of the original engines - one of which is the Vels Parnelli engine and the other is the Racer Brown engine. There is one engine built from a head kit(?) in a race car in New Zealand. I have the third original engine - built by Alan Smith in the U.K. - complete with dry sump and Lucas timed slide injection - which I am setting up with TWM butterfly Weber type throttle bodies to use on the street in my 1940 Willys. I also have a spare pair of heads, one of which is unmachined and the other which is partially machined. There may be a couple more pairs of the heads somewhere, but that's about it as far as I can tell.

The $2800 price tag is in 1974 dollars - that would buy you a decent new car back then.....

    I was wrong... Sorry!..
I was refering to the chevy prototype "canted valve" heads that Smokey worked on for Chevrolet... Those heads were to be used on the 302 Z/28 motor for the SCCA Trans-Am series... But it never happened...:(
Someone posted pictures of those motors in the "Favorite engines thread"..... I'll go find it and bump it up to the top...

I think Floyd Garret has the only set. Are on a silver '69 Z.

  25. if you have upwards of 10,000 grand get your self a wayne/horning 12 port set up with a magneto.

not as rare but equally cool is a 261,they can be built to go fast and look very cool doing it.

the o.h.c. poncho inline 6 is super cool and rare and have over 200 ponys stock.

or find a 302 jimmy engine and buy the 12 port fontanna head set up with mag being sold in the classifieds, now your cooking with gas!

inliners are cool, keep it straight and have fun.there is tons out there for them im building a 261 with a bunch of go fast goodies on it.

They made 43 of them, but never sold any. I know there is one 1983 Corvette on display at the Bowling Green museum. But anyway... who'd want a junky cross fire 350 anyway? :D
