Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by radgirl, Aug 21, 2012.

  1. You have to hide shit welding behind something! Shame it's not lead - you would be rich!

  2. Pretty much sums up my take on the project, forget the assholes, there are plenty of the 120,000 members here that want to see what a bit of Oz ingenuity can produce.,....not to put any pressure on :p I mean you are not doing it for the HAMB....you have chosen to share ..that's all....
    Go girl......:D

  3. Looks to me like you have it covered. Doing more work then some guys I know who have had Mercs for years....Keep it up!!

Why thank you! I am doing it for myself :) The reason Im sharing is Im proud as punch that I made a plan and have moved heaven and earth to stick to it. I havent given myself a time limit as that'd be just stupid, but Im not stopping. If I hit a wall, I find something else to do on her.

I have other projects that I kind of lost interest in or put myself in a position where I was dreaming too Big and too Expensive for now but she is not one of them. She will be my everyday driver so Im doing it realistically. I will be using an engine and gearbox I already have no Bells and Whistles, (Cleveland or Windsor not sure yet) same as on of the trans and diffs I already have. I thought 4 link and bagging but again thats a time factor? So it might just be air shocks yet.

We'll just see as we go. Anyway she's calling me. Lets see what I can get done today.

Yea looks good so far and keep up the good work, every one on here is gonna have an opinion and most are gonna talk shit because "it isn't how it was done back then" well guess what it isn't back then anymore so sometimes you start with someone else's ratrod that failed and if it's labeled that at first who gives a shit it's your car build it your way!

Hi Radgirl, did you buy that from NSW? I saw it for sale a little while ago. Where do you live? I'm in Melbourne and was looking at this one when it was for sale. I ended up buying one from Perth. Good luck with your project. It's still a Merc and we need to save her.

    Cheers

Could you take a few steps back and snap some photos so we could see what you're working with, overall?

This is the one from NSW to be honest me baggin out the chop job is prob a bit unfair. Ive been searching the web and it isnt the worst by far. I was more worried about the steering, battery, Fuel pump, weak chassis etc. I could have just repaired those issues as I had already cleaned up the sheetmetal issues inside......but I never do anything by halves

Much nicer. Well after full inspection I cant promise there will be no bog/bondo. It will be 100 times better than now but some of the previous work is pretty nasty, and Im not a miracle worker. I tried to get accurate measurements today and it was hilarious. I had strings everywhere and a very friggin frustrated frown. I ended up getting out my laser level and had to pin point marks and use them as guides as everything is out by ridiculous amounts. Im surprised I didnt have to get a bloody GPS and plot it hahahahaha

  12. Hey you're not alone ! I too have a background as an Automotive brake specialist and have been EXACTLY where you are now . Offered up some advice on thread about brake woes , suggested clamping off hoses and letting go one at a time ( Oldest trick in the book I thought?? ) and got lined up real good by the "firing Squad !

Stick around , ignore the haters and once people realise you're a "doer" not a "gunna" you will get respect . Hell you have mine already ! I had a '49 Mercury Tudor as a 16 year old kid ( I'm bugger all older than you are now ) , sold it in my 20's and have regretted it ever since .

Im in Port Macquarie. Mine is registered so I have no dramas. Its at sheetmetal stage and its slowed down a bit the last few days. But in my defense I made some mean school treats for my daughter and she comes first. Back to it tonight.

  16. That's actually pretty good advice about clamping off the brake hoses. I never thought about that. I like what you've done to your Merc as well. Some of the pictures of what the last bastard did to your car make my stomach hurt.

Trust me!!!!!!! Its making my fucking head hurt :( Its a lovely 31.5 Deg c today, I have the man flu and Im getting there very slowly. Replaced roof section above rear window frame, just filling with weld bit by and filing at the moment. Not going too hot and heavy as I dont want to warp anything and cause myself more work. This part is going to be a slow process but it will be worth it in the end.

I'm a firm believer some cars deserve a second chance and they usually end up with stubborn saps. I say that because my 52 Chevy was a hack job too, and i am one of those stubborn saps. Keep pluggin away. You got this...

  19. I've got an old Dodge truck with the same problem. Some shit head who had more ambition that he had talent destroyed the roof by butchering a chop, and I've been more than anxious to get the new roof I have on it. One piece at a time, mate. One piece at a time.

  20. I'm gonna add you to the HAMB Merc Club list, radgirl. So,,,when you get a chance, post some pic's of your car, maybe the "before" pic so we can follow your progress.

Glad to see another one being saved. Wish more women here in Texas were into doing work on their own cars.

I got lucky and married one of the few good ones!

So all excited today! I just opened and assembled my English Wheel, Air operated Hammer and Foot operated Shrinker Stretcher.....BETTER THAN XMAS DAY HERE FOLKS!!!!!!!!! Now just awaiting the arrival of my power assisted Bead Roller and like Tom Cruise I will be hugging my new toys and telling them "You complete me". The window section Ive replaced so far needs to a fair bit of work yet so next section I will clean up on the English Wheel before welding in to hopefully make less work with a Dolly. I will upload some photos of progress on sheetmetal work around rear window frame. Im just doing it section by section to keep it sturdy, then I will remove the second ugly window frame some bright spark tack welded in. Cant wait to cut out the (as I call them) lovely lady lumps that stick out like boobs on the roof and continue the new slick bodyline. Removed Factory firewall today and refitting with custom made 3mm one to give smoother look and cover chassis sections. I thought I may have gone beyond my ability but so far Im doing OK. Again its only metal :D

Anyway sheetmetal sucks but its so much fun when you've never really worked with it before. Learn new things everyday thats my motto. Tonight its more research on upholstery and sewing. Im now looking for an industrial sewing machine as my pathetic $3000 one wont sew thicker fabric than denim (WTF?) another note to self expensive doesnt always mean best
