Hi guys... I know there are a lot of Drag Racers here... so I figured I'd ask. I just picked up a used TH400 with a trans brake. It has a reverse pattern valve body. I already have a Hurst Quarter Stick shifter... but it is for a forward pattern. To go from 1 ro 2 to third with this shifter... you bump it into 2nd from 1st, then pull the lever and run it up into 3rd... and then let go of the lever and you can bump it into nuetral. I kinda ran through the process with a reverse valve body (I think) and it seems as though it would work. It would mean I could bump it back and forth from 1st and nuetral (which is good)... and then pull the lever to go from 1st to 2nd and then bump it into 3rd (from 2nd). Would this work? I know they make special shifters for this valve body... but this car is an ultra low buck '31 RPU drag car... so, I want to use what I got! Thank you, Sam
Nope, it can kinda work. The 1st to 2nd shift is just a hard pull - no devices, just pull the handle. The 2nd to3rd you pull handle and lever. If you use yours and pull the lever to go from 1st to 2nd you'll have so much addrenalin you'll pull straight to 3rd. You might be able to buy just the 'gate' for that shifter to change it to reverse pattern.
Thanks oj! I see where the gate is TIG welded in... I can ver easily replace it. Or, modify it to pull, and then pull the lever for third... like it should be. Just a little wleding and grinding! (I'm such a tight****!) Thanks for the tip! Sam
I don't know about the Hurst shifter but with a B&M shifter you can buy the "gate" to convert a forward pattern shifter to reverse. Seeing that many Hurst auto. shifters look like a B&M, I'd contact Hurst to see if you can convert yours before hacking it up.
That's the nice thing about the B&M... that gate is interchangeable. On the Hurst, it is welded in... but a little work with a Dremmel, and my TIG welder, and I think I can replace it! Thanks for the TIP guys! Sam
