There was a 307 in the 50 Chevy Pickup I bought in '99. Ran good. Purely stock except for dual exhaust. No complaints from me - but I wasn't trying to race it or anything like that.

  3. And what if you could get + 0.030,40 or 60 pistons for 137.00 plus shipping ?
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/380466026069?redirect=mobile

    Does that sweeten the deal?

How about the whole damn kit with oversized pistons for 285.00

My 307 developed a bad knock the other day, started it up and within 5 minutes it sounded like a jack hammer! It was a good motor, was in my buddys truck for a while, then I put it in my drag car and got about 60 passes out of it so I cant complain about a free motor. The crank isnt hurt so im gonna do like porknbeaner said, take the 307 crank and put in a 350 block. ;)

Hmmmm. yea, nominally .016 in the hole?? Yes that does, actually. A set of lightly milled Vortecs with a ghetto grind and some pocket work...Yea, that sweetens the pot alot.

Jack hammer noises pretty much guarantee you the crank needs work.
How loud and how long will determine how much work to be true or a mailbox post.

I had 307 parts advertised here on the Hamb, standard crank and blocks,a complete engine. No one wanted them here or Craigs list. After 6 months of the stuff being the way,I scrapped if all.

That was a few dozen with 327 crankshafts..
You sir should be horse whipped...;)

  20. Well if you get a few dozen more,
let me know. Actually probably worth the trip down for just a couple if they run with good compression.

  21. Well nobody wants them.
Several reasons for that, there is a stigma attached to them because the factory screwed the pooch when they made them. What they did wrong was use shity quality cams, nylon gears and huge combustion chambered heads. However most gear heads change those things around first on any hop up. But because its a 307 and Everyone has "treefidy" on the brain , they come out in good working order never to be thought of again. The other thing was chevy never used it in anything performance related, therefore it never will be any good.

    Wow cool 283, fast too.
    Whoa bitchen 327 , screamer.
Eeew a 307 , slug, dog, grandma motor, junk, boat anchor, scrap

I went round and round with a guy over here about his 383. Blah blah this, blah blah that yadda yadda the other thing and back again. I listened politely and at the end of that I ask how much did it cost and how much power. He says 4,000 and 400.hp. I say fair enough and I'm sure it will run hard. But you're spending 10.00 per 1 HP or 10:1 dollar HP ratio, not bad in the big picture. Now we were talking about this standing next to my blown hemi so there's no need to think I'm a cheap skate but .....

I said look at this, a running 307 - free . 305 heads free. Cam, and gaskets less than 200
Should be 300-325 HP. My ratio 0.60:1 or 60 cents per 1 HP.

$0.60 per 1 HP compared to $10.00 per 1 HP is a pretty easy choice to make. Unless that extra 75-100 HP is worth $ 3800.00

Let's say you spend 300 for a good 307 engine ( insane) and 100 on 305 heads ( insane too) and the 200 for cam and gaskets. That's 600.00- hell call it 1000.00 .
Now the ratio is $3.00:1 HP still a no brainer.

All of that works out financially when you find one of those lowly 307s being discharged from duty solely because its a 307. If its tired and needs plenty or if you are planning a total rebuild of a worn out engine, or build up of a ultra high performance machine, the dollar to HP ratio gets flipped around a bit to far on the 307 and better choices are there.

Rather than something to brag about, scrapping 307s left right and center is a pretty solid indicator that someone doesn't know shit about sbc's. Seriously. You do realize you just pitched a truckload of large-journal 327 cranks, right? And if any of those 307s came from trucks, at least a few of them would have been steel.;) Way to go...

I have one in my 53 that I have been working on for a while. People wonder why I put a 307 in my custom when there is a 350 on a stand next to it. I do not think they will be wondering when they hear it run now that it is running. It sounds gooooood!

  26. For sale 307 crank - ........ EEEEEW

    For sale large journal
    327 crank - .......... Cool

    307 truck engine. .......... Eeeeeew

327 forged crank .......... very cool , I want two please.

It funny how many gear heads on all the internet forums just beat the 307 like a red headed step child but just would kill for a forged 327 crank. 307 is the worst engine ever made by chevy , complete garbage blah blah blah.

But I'm going to shut up now, seems the price of 307s on CL just tripled by the latest listings.

Oops! Oh oh. Yea, 307s are shit, man, you dont want one of those. Now that you mention it, so are small journal 327s. Steer clear of those too. Get a 350!:p

  28. I bought a bone-stock 72 nova with a 307-muncie 4 speed..only modification was a hurst shifter.
I found a free 350 HP cam, and a factory 350 Q-jet setup for it...installed a Zoom clutch and new dual exhaust with glasspacs.
It still gave me 18 MPG on the hiway and ran pretty hard. Was a lotta clean, cheap fun.

Don't feel too bad none of those cranks were steel.
