Unlikely he'd be able to do that since the Explorer shafts I'm familiar with are 3.66in diameter aluminum. The Explorer shafts are good source material if you want an early Mustang or Falcon driveshaft with 1310 yokes. The P71 Crown Vic cop-car driveshafts are 54.5in long, also 3.66in diameter aluminum, has 1330 yokes on the ends, might be a better starting point to cut from, $37 at the local pick-n-pull half that on their 2-3 half-price days per year, of course first you've got to find one that hasn't been dinged by the forklift... A good driveline shop will be able to come up with a hybrid U-joint to mix and match 1310 and 1330 yoke sizes, inside vs outside snap-ring retention, etc.
just be glad your not dealing with the old "mechanic's" style u-joint that ford made because their is no crossover u-joint!
Or, buy two joints and swap two of the bearing cups to make your own combo joint. This way you end up with a spare joint . In most cases the diameter of the yoke shafts are the same , the OD of the bearing cups matches the application. Hope that makes sense.
if he's going from 1310 to 1330, the only difference is the length of the cross...so that won't work. And I would not try that trick anyways
I'm going to try to use a Crown Vic driveshaft in a 57 chev. pickup with a 350 turbo and a 10-bolt Camaro rearend. Luckily I have some seasoned parts guys that will take the time to research the u-joint options. I'm told it can be done but that I may have to get an addition u-joint for the correct caps for the driveshaft. The crown vic caps fit the shafts on 369 and 371 precision u-joints I have. The Crown Vic shaft is a nice heavy-duty piece and just the right length for my application. Sam
I went to a local driveshaft shop with my measurements. They built and balanced a driveshaft for a 350 trans and 9" rear with a ****er shaft. Same day service for $120. No problems.
My problem is that I live in a rural area. The driveshaft shaft shop is 100 miles away in Springfield Mo. I had my current one made there and they did an excellent job. I must have allowed for the "play" two times and the shaft ended up 1 1/2 inches short. I'm using it but getting a small vibration. The yoke is only in the trans about 1 1/2-2 inches.
