I never heard of a Chevy called a Shoe Box. It was always Ford , 49 and 50 years roughly.

It is strange the way things change their title, Like the grass strip between the road and the side walk, many name like Tree lawn, Devils strip, ect... or pop, soda, coke.... The titles keep going. WHats right?

Maybe it depends on geography. I always thought that the 55-57 chevys were called shoeboxes. Never heard it used on fords until I joined here. Also never heard of tri-fives. It was always tri-chevys.

I'm from Ohio and we always called the Chevy a shoe box. we also call the 74-88 suburban a bread box. we call it a curb-lawn, soda is called pop, and a circular burnout is called donuts. So if you spill your pop doing donuts causing you to hit the curb-lawn and roll your shoe box we call 911.

In Elyria they call it a "curb-lawn"? In the Akron area we called it the devil's strip or devil strip. (But definitely "pop" and "donuts"!)

I only ever saw the term "shoebox" in old magazines, so I never heard anyone use the term for either shoebox Fords OR tri-five Chevies. Even the hardcore wheeler-dealer car builders I knew growing up just called them "old cars." Although in high school when my dad got a nice '50 Ford and I told people they would ALWAYS say "a '54 what?" so I learned to really ennunciate the d in Ford. I suppose saying "a shoebox Ford" would have eliminated that problem.

I'm still happy. I just try not to wave limp wristed or wear a pink shirt in public! Never did drink Pop. But love soda. The center grass is the mediun and the right side is the shoulder. We did donuts in Illinois too. Any boxy lookin car, especially tri-five Chevys and 49-51 Fords were shoeboxes.
Tom McCahil was really good about giving cars names because of how they looked or felt. Those early car books were the "little pages." But that wasn't until after the big pages came out.
Anytime a reporter made a new comment about a show car kids copied it and then it stuck.
I'm so happy I could hit ya with my purse!

Got to tell ya. The grass between the street & the sidewalk is the boulevard ( I will mow the lawn but you get to do the boulevard). The lawn belongs to the property owner but the boulevard belongs to the city but the property owner is responsible for the upkeep.

You got that right. We have five acres in the boonies. No one across the entire 1/2 mile dirt road. Five acres is 330' by about 20' beyond our fence. I still get to mow that section because the county forgot we live here....Except once a year when taxes are due! WTF does this have to do with a shoebox? Hell I'm just commenting on what's here.
Once in Illinois our Governor got caught having a shoebox full of money hid!;) He may have driven a 49 Ford or 56 Chevy!

on a similar note, the k-car saved chrysler's ass, and it looked like a shoebox to me. when ford came out with the taurus, chrysler chief lee iacocca said it looked like a "baked potato." but boy did they sell!

  15. x3 on stove bolt for early chevies down here(at least going by the 60's aussie hot rod mags i have) they all refer to 49-54 chevs as stovebolts, 49-51 fords as spinners (single spinner or twin spinner depending on the grille "bullets") and 55-57 chevs a shoeboxes.

  19. Another curve ball for you all.
In NZ we call then Fords either single spinners or twin spinners.
Shoebox is a recent term here that I gather was imported from the USA.
