    Kev,
Just out of curiosity, is your red oxide primer rattle canned or do you take the time to spray with automotive grade paint as you go along?

If it's rattle canned; Rustoleum, etc. do you find you have much problem with rust coming through right away since you live near the ocean (I assume)?

The work all looks great. Blows me away that you weld all those loose panels together and when done it looks well, "right". Looks smooth, and original to guys like me that don't know the difference. I REALLY admire your abilities.

Your cardboard bed is cooler than my metal one.

  10. Thanks guys. One hand has been operated on and is fine, the other (left) is being done in November.

For years I have used Rustoleum rusty metal primer in rattle cans. It gives a real good protective coat . With a good coat or 2 I never get rust coming through. It is not like those watery, thin primers. With the ocean air and fog, not to mention my stuff sits out side a lot, it just makes sense to prime stuff as I go. It also covers without the tiger stripes an can be touched up much later without showing.

  13. flattyv8....The master cylinder is Mopar, not sure exact application. Chassisworks used to carry it in their catalog. It is aluminum. It probably needs rebuilding, been sitting around my place for many years.

  14. Nothing goes to waste with you my friend. Looks great! Glad the hand deal went well, hopefully the other one will get done without a hitch too.

I'm sure you've heard this many times before, Kev, but - you're a magician. This truck has really come together.

How close is the cab to a stocker?

It looks like it's going to be a blast to drive. Anyway, that's all from me, carry on. :)

Who say you can't make Chicken Salad out of Chicken Shit! Great use of odd parts. Most people would have thrown them out.

  18. Very nice work, Kev..this thread has made me regret selling my willys PU project...had almost the same identical base to begin with...an old sedan front half with doors and a nice cowl.firewall and original frame/front suspennsion/axle and a clapped out 'glass tilt front...had somekinda 40s pickup back half tacked on crooked..it was awful but rust free and I let it go because it looked like too much work to make it right..yeah, right. My project was twice as nice as yours and I wussed out...doh!
Congrats, you are truly a man of vision with the talent to back it up.

These are the best builds in my opinion, Using stuff that most people think is too rough. (stuff nobody wants) and turning it into something everyone wants...Great build kevin...

  20. Brent....From the back of the doors forward a Willys sedan is the same as a Willys pick up. I have never measured a pick up other than the curved corner on the top of the door (sedan is same door but top comes to 90 degree corner) And back window size. I think my cab is pretty close size wise to a stock one but I'm not trying to make it exact, just using my eyecrometer. I figure if it doesn't look weird then it is OK.

You know you have a good build thread when you have to sort through the pages of praise, to find the actual project hah

Ditto on that!!!! Kevin's work.... past, present & future is like taking a on-line course in how to build a hot rod & how to do it RIGHT.

Let's us NOT forget ...... as inexpensive (low-buck) as possible.

Very impressive, always a blast to follow your builds!

  28. I got a good start on the bed. I am not trying to copy a stock bed. I am trying to build this truck with a 60's competition look so a short fabricated bed should suit it. I just want the bed to be as simple as possible without looking weird. I was happy with the size of the cardboard pattern so I cut 2 sides from 18g cold rolled. Then I ran it through my bead roller with step dies to raise the center.

My brake is too short so I took them to my friends shop to bend, thanks Bill!

I made the posts out of 1 1/2" x .083 wall square tubing. It goes across the bottom also and connects the posts. Panels are plug welded to the posts.

Bent up a front panel that will bolt in.

Here it is sitting in place. Now I need to build some floor structure, a tailgate and mount the bed to the frame. There will be some panels added later that will go down and cover the frame rails.
