Looking for 1936-1956 Buicks and/or Packards in the Myrtle Beach SC area. Any HAMBers have knowledge of junkyards having this kind of old tin? Thanks! John
This should be interesting. I've been going to M.B. bike week since '89. Rode all over that area and as far south as Charlston, SC and never seen a single junkyard. I'm sure that there has to be at least one around there but I've never found it. Unless it's a golf club junkyard!
Try Temples Auto Salvage in Batesburg SC (803 359 9063), which is about 20 minutes outside of Columbia. Ask for Russell..he has thousands of cars and most used to be 70s and older, but alot got smashed when scrap was up a few years ago. He will have a mental inventory of all his old stuff, give him a holler. Good luck, -Abone.

Hey Im not from Myrtle Beach but from Columbia, there is a good junkyard here http://www.easyexport.us/copart-locations/auction-in/sc-columbia Ive bought my Crown Vic there last year, it had a damaged left side but I repaired it and it didnt cost me too much. I know it's not Myrtle Beach, but if you use online auctions and you are from another state/town, they always provide shipping

OK Andy. Taking my laptop, the TS has free Wi-fi, so I'll contact you via pm once we're there. Driving in from Hotlanta and after the stay will go up I-26 from Columbia to Clinton. West on US 72 to Greenwood where I attended HS. FastDriver, does that yard in Columbia have any old tin? Taking tomorrow off to prep for the trip.
Columbia has a couple of you-pick yards - I was in one a couple weeks ago and while there weren't too many HAMB-related cars, there was a '57 Chevy tudor sedan in the one. Also a '64 Catalina and a '64-ish Buick Special with the little iron V8 that replaced the aluminum one. Hardly any rot on them compared to up here.
Think about it...... If it was the same up here as it is down there you'd have to change your user name to "dustynewyorker"!
I wished I'd had time to pull the front fenders off the Chevy. They needed the bottom rear patched, but the headlight eyebrows were perfect. But then all the cars I saw in there, I could have just as easily sold as projects here. The real shame was the '66 Coronet 2-door hardtop... no rust on that sucker at all.
Attended the Cruise to the Coast Antique Car and Truck show in North Myrtle Beach 10/12. Met a few local folks and saw some interesting cars. Saw a real nice 53 Special 2 door Riviera and a 60 LeSabre.
jr9162 just wondering why you would leave Augusta go to Columbia then Greenwood, when you could go straight up 25 unless you just like riding
We drove from Atlanta to Myrtle beach taking I-20 to Florence, then south to the beach on US 76, SC 576, and US 501. When we leave MB, we'll backstep to Columbia. From there I'll flip the coin as to whether to take I-26 to Clinton and US 72 to Greenwood, or continue on I-20 to St. Andrews and take US 378 to Saluda, and US 178 to Greenwood. I usually drive Hwy 25 from Greenwood to Augusta, after all it's known as the Old Augusta Road. Until I reached adulthood, I lived on both Hwys 178 and 25 in Greenwood County, graduating from Greenwood HS.
Sure was. I talked to the owner quite a bit. I took pics of it, and the 60 LeSabre. Lady said she wanted $38,900 for it. Bit steep for my blood considering it was only a 364... You may have seen me, I was the guy walking around with the blue NAVY Veteran baseball cap...
seems like everything east of I-95 has been swallowed up either by scrappers or people building goddamn golf courses.... there are some small local guys but they're sketchy on operating hours......... i guess being your own boss has that advantage.
i live west of Augusta and it looked like you were taking the long way around, but you are doing a lot of driving and it sounds like you know what you are doing.
I may have seen you, but then again there are a lot of retired navy guys around the beach. I am Big/Tall with shaved head. My wife had on a tie dyed t-shirt. She signed the VW as she is a breast Cancer Survivor.
Their really is not a good junkyard near the Myrtle Beach area. Every thing rust away so fast here. And just in case you don't know Columbia and Rock hill are not in the Myrtle Beach area.
My father in law lives in MB and we come in on 501 and there is a big junkyard with some old iron out front, it's close to Conway and not far from MB, I keep saying I'm gonna stop, but I never make it, I don't know the name, sorry....Brian
^^^^Bummer, I regret not stopping last year, there was a complete 60-64 Corvair Wagon and a 56 Merc Montclair out front, looked like someone just drug it out of a barn, still had fresh chicken crap all over it but seemed pretty solid from the road, black and coral, the wife and kids were getting antsy and had to keep going! Should have faked a leg cramp or something!....Brian
Yup, not only has the good old, buildable stuff gotten scarce, so have the junkyards that used to be their homes.
A word of thanks to my "new" HAMB friends who met me and the wife at a wings and things restaurant tonight. Andy, Jim, Brian, and others... We enjoyed the meal and looking at your rides in the parking lot. Had a good chat about cars and swapped a few ideas. Keep in touch and eventually I'll get down there with my Buick. I appreciate the effort you guys made to meet and greet us. John
