Vintage Tach Collectors Show and Tell

Lump's tach is a 1963-1964 Chevrolet Impala 409 tachometer with the 7K face. Small block cars got the 6k face. Its missing the metal housing that bolts to the dash housing.

I had this Mallory on my gasser, but it didn't like the MSD box. Had to swap to a newer Sun to work with it.

 

I've had this "football" tach & EB-9A sender for a long time & finally got the sender converted by Williamsons. It works great. They're good people to deal with.

 

Yep, they did a conversion on the Sun blue line tach in my Comet.

 

That tach is for a 64 Impala and they are available new from Classic Industries. If you ever want any old tachometer restored or converted to work properly with aftermarket ignition systems give Redline Gauge Works a call at (661) 259-8891 and ask for Shannon, he has been doing tach conversions for 24 years and does the job right, also a quick turnaround time.

 

Was wondering if you all could help me out with some info on this tach.

Dad used it in his '57 Chevy (270hp 283). It's a Stewart Warner with curved glass.

I've been trying to hlpe my folks by selling some things for them. What is this tach worth?

 

For some strange reason, that style S/W "wings" tach doesn't command the higher prices of the later S/W "wings" tachs. (And I'm not talking about the new repops.) There are two similar ones on Ebay right now with $100-$200 asking prices & no bids. If it was a functioning mechanical "wings" oil pressure or water temp gauge, it'd be gone instantly. It might have to do with the connectivity factor, i.e. those others don't have the necessary stuff with them to make them actually work. It appears that yours has all of the wiring & connections & you know exactly where it came from & how it was connected, As result, I think that raises the desirability factor of yours. Yours has the proverbial "provenance." Anyone else have any insight for this guy? Am I off base?

 

$20.00 swap meet find. SW 765 with matching sender (not shown) from around 1962. Story was it was bought for a early 60's Cougar race car and never installed. Passes all tests as well as the sender as set out by SW in their service documents.

Nice thing is it matches the rest of the gauges that will be installed in the dash of my "A" coupe. The bracket for the tach is just something I whipped up for the tach and a button for the horn.

 

The Tach in my 62 Impala and my 55 chevy there both old school and I drive them

 

An 8000 tach, 12 volt, with an early SBC sender has got to be worth at least $300. If it was anything else, you'd have a hard time finding a buyer.

I hate to get rid of it, but my folks are in their mid 70's and still working to fend off the loan company!

Lots of cool old stuff in this thread; here's my contribution:

It's not an automotive tach, but I'm planning on mounting it in my car anyway and using a mech tach drive to turn it. This was given to me years ago by my grandfather who used it every day on the job for many years at Eldon Axle plant (part of Chrysler, right next to Plymouth Assembly in Detroit) - thought it would be a nice bit of history to put in my mopar.

 

Not sure how old or desirable.

 

I did indeed, I didn't snap a picture of it, but it's a black box with blue lining - has a few attachments including one wheel with a 12" circumference to allow measurements to be made in feet per minute.

The only issue I can see setting this thing up in a car is that I'll either have to drive it off the crank, or build a little 2:1 gear box if I come off the cam / distributor.

 

I had one of the Tachrads in my '64 Chevy II Nova SS. I wanted to take it out of the car when I sold it, but the new owner said "no way".

 

Here's the Falcon Sprint specific ('63, 64 & 65 only) one in my '63 Sprint. The Comet Caliente tach was the same, only the lettering different.

Here's one I used to have... it's a Don Garlits Stars and Stripes tach. I sold it to someone here on the HAMB several years back. I have a few other old tachs, but no pics of them... nothing else quite like this one though.

 

Any suggestions on where to have a tach repaired. Have 3 Sun Supertachs that don't work.

 

Gotta love a " Tachrad " with a Muntz 8 track player above it....cool.
