I think if you're spending $1000 or more on a vehicle or project, it damn well should come with a title.

take the 2 and build 1 out of this one!
I will say this. I'd rather show up at the car cruise in a 50's 4dr olds than a 2dr ford 77LTD-2,.
check your state on getting titles. some are easy some a pain

I see I'm the "FNG" and we have a lot of unemployed comedians.... Well it's not in China and I only put down a deposit, I really don't want to back out of the deal. Unless it's really bad idea to move forward.

So come on guys what's the consensus, should I buy it or not? I don't have a lot of money in the bank so this is a really big deal for me... I'm desperate to get back into this hobby.

Rick, do your research hun, look into the title issue first and foremost...before anything! Secondly before you buy, see what you can do about opening those doors, make sure it's something simple and not something that's going to cost you more in the long run...I personally wouldn't pay $1,000 and I'm sure you can get him or her down another $200-300...if your heart is really set please do your research...maybe if you know someone who knows what they are looking at take a second look over it...it's a nice looking car and would make a great family car...

Just my $.02 - something we've all seen a lot of today... :D

Aside from the title being a problem, you don't get much for $1000.00 anymore. The engine and trans must be worth at least half of that if it turns over.

Well, if you're still dithering, weigh up what it needs and how well equipped you are to deal with it.

Can you sort out the no title issue easily without any hassle?

Are you familiar with these cars enough to know why it doesn't run and know exactly what it needs to make it run and know where you can lay your hands on the parts easily and cheaply?

Are you skilled enough to tackle the work without getting disheartened and ending up regretting all the work for little or no reward?

Have you always loved Olds 4 doors and always dreamed of owning one?

Unless the answer to every question is a wholehearted yes, then you should consider walking away from it.

You asked for opinions and had a pretty overwhelming negative response from pretty experienced people, and you are asking again, do you think the tide will turn and you'll get overwhelming approval and support? I don't think you'll get that.

It's your call, but as it stands it doesn't have a lot going for it.

    Mart.

Oh yeah, hold the phone the other way up!

I would pass!! Number one killer for me would be the price and no title.

  13. The way scrap prices keep fluctuating, it's always going to be worth at least $500. You can pick half a dozen parts off it and make at least $300, the valve covers will bring $50-$75 on eBay every time and weigh basically nothing. I don't think even at $1000 you could get hurt too bad. Buy it, fix it, enjoy it for a while. I had a 4-door I cruised in for years and the view is the same from behind the wheel.

I bought a 56 Olds 88 4dr htp out of a local junkyard, no papers, last summer. They wanted 1k, as they can make quite a bit by sorting metals and selling it that way. I did get it for 800, hoping it was a good motor...it was not. 60,400 orig miles, door stickers confirmed that fact.

Too far gone to sell as a project, so I parted it out on hamb. Tough way to make money. Maybe 50% profit over the cost.

4drs are not too popular I guess, because I had 3 100% rot free doors for $50each, and no one bought them, or asked about them.

So, I would think 1k is not a big risk if you have to bail out.

Ha, mine IS. Last pic of it shows it heading on an all expense paid vacation to Asia. The roof ripped off right after this pic. $197 there.

If you are tight on cash like said just tell the dude you will give him $1000 with him furnishing a title or $800 with you getting one but be dang carefull. When you go to the DMV with the vin the car could be stolen, you just don't know. Its your money but no title is a 50-50 flip of a coin. You are actually buying a parts car,and parting it out won't get your money back.Good luck !

No title in ca is trouble. I looked into it and its a pain and not 100% you'll get it sorted.
Gotta be more potential projects down south.

I have bought 6 different cars without a title and registered them in CA, if you have AAA go to a field office with your bill of sale. Pay the transfer fees, and an extra $100.00 to file under lost title. Tags for the car in your hands the same day. Also works the same way at the DMV you just wait in line longer, either way it's registered. A lein sale is a BITCH, but not the same as your situation.

Lost titles are no big deal. Just more expensive. I've only had one car that had a clean title

Maybe we're missing the point here. He did say that he made a deposit, so it would be the stand up thing to follow through. A deal is a deal.

2 door or 4 door!!!!! The car is worth what some one is willing to pay. No one can really be the judge. The question is. IS IT WORTH IT TO YOU????????

The man told me registration would be easy even without a title. I told him I would have to check that out... therefore if I feel it is too difficult or too expensive I can back out of the deal.
