whats up H.A.M.B ers!! here is some of the pics that i promised about my first build ever... a 1953 Plymouth cranbrook. all original. flat 6 217 in her with the hydrive ******. she runs great now!! brakes have been completely rebuillt. I am now working to put in a new clutch because it seems to be collapsed. I bought this thing in Sacramento, CA for 600 bucks!! it has every single piece to the car... but the original owner decided to take everything apart in efforts to rebuild it. thats where i come in... trying to put the puzzle back together. i will update with new pics as the time goes bye..
you know that the hydrive as a special clutch set up right? do you have a hydrive manual? looks like a good start
No I do not. When you say a special setup.. What do you mean? When I first got the car, the column shifter was real stiff, but I could get it in to all the gears. But now when I step on the clutch and try to put it into any gear it just wants to grind the teeth... So I figured the clutch was going out. I wish I had a manual!! All I know is that it shares the engine oil and it is a semi auto. Only using the clutch to put it into first gear and if you wanted to drive manual. Has anyone pulled a clutch out of a cranbrook before? Is it hard to do?? I have a guy that wants to charge me 250.00 to change it and a shop that will rebuild the clutch for 200.00.
i have pulled and replaced my hydrive clutch it can be done in one day, and i had no experiance when i did it. also the transmission dosent actually change gears. you set it in 3rd and it has a torque convertor tah allows you to take off with out the clutch. the funny thing is some of the paper work says because of the torque convertor setup these car are rated at something like 400 ft/lbs of torque, but on have 100 hp. i sent you a pm with my number if you have any questions.
Neat car. I had a 53 Crankbrook 4 door for a while too. They're a nice cheap introduction to cl***ic cars and can make a good cruiser. Have fun with it.
Would you notice that the O.P is banned from the forum? Probably won't be getting a response from him.
I had one in highschool in the early 60's. Man those *******s would bust a head gasket at the drop of a hat. Dont ask me how I know!! I changed 3 of them ****ers.
Ha yeah that would have been grounds for a-hole status.. I didnt notice it at first. Too funny, thanks for the morning laugh
I did notice how close the cylinders are, I wonder if that is what the problem is/was. The gaskets are not that expensive but I would hate to keep fixing it.
