This one sure caught my eye, mainly because it's a view of my hometown. This is looking north on Calhoun St. from the southern area of downtown Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The spires of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in the background are still visible. Sadly, as can be seen in the attahed Google street view, nothing else in this shot has survived.

Wish I could read some of the other signs better. Sappenfield's Sport Shop is visible and above it on the second story is Scott's Recreation. Scott's Recreation always seemed strange to me as it was a bowling alley that you had to climb a set of stairs to get to. An old phone book I have states they were open 24 hours a day and also had an indoor golf driving range.

I never bowled there but they also had some pool tables and a room full of pinball machines. The place was kind of dimly lit and seedy looking so of course I have fond memories of sneaking downtown a couple times to visit the place and spend a little money playing pinball. My mother would have been shocked if she'd known; my dad, not so much.

The building further down the street with the big sign on the roof was, I believe, The Peoples Trust Bank. At the time of this photo I think it may have been called The Dime Bank.

Across the street was Duesler's House Of Music and Lenkendorfer's Coffee Ranch, both also long gone. I hadn't seen this photo before; thanks for posting it. Let me know if you have a larger copy of this shot.

I went looking for the 1959 Thunderbird Junior photo posted by raceron1120 in post #53920 and could not find where he sourced it from to get more information like location, but I did find this one from 1963. It is from Detroit with the Penobscot building in the background and was the grand prize in the CBDA back to school contest. (anybody know what CBDA stood for?)

 

How many of you realize that that locomotive was made by General Motors? Electro-Motive Division. The factory was, and still is in La Grange, Illinois. There was also a factory in London, Ontario, but it was closed lately and is now is in Muncie, Indiana.

 

I should say that GM sold their locomotive division in 2005.

A few pages back, Jimmy Stewart was mentioned in the B-36 posts. To me, he and Ted Williams were true heroes, unlike many stars who made promotional films during WWII and never came close to combat, they both were in the thick of things. Williams almost bought the farm in Korea, but managed to land his crippled fighter.
