I've owned both so I can't say I favor one over the other. My only reason (am I being selfish?) to have a split would be to be able to find posts about customs without havinig to scroll through (50 to 1) hot rod posts to find them.

Ryan you have done an incredible job keeping this board going. I don't think anyone would have any complaints about any decision you'd make to improve the board if you thought in was neccessary.

I'm hot rod guy and most of the time I find myself reading a lot of tips and discussions about customs, both on the same page is fine for me.

Another "if it ain't broke don't fix it" here!

The forum already moves too fast for me to see much of it. This would mean that I'd miss even more. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Well what I am seeing by reading through here is all the hotrod guys are saying leave it alone and the custom guys want their own section, but as usual we, (the custom guys) are out numbered so it dosent really matter what we want we will be out numbered as always, so we will keep searching like always. Now I dont mean to sound like a whiner because this is a maijor kick ass board so there is no way that I am complaining about it, its just hard to get a fair vote when the numbers are so one sided. I came here to learn. I contribute when I can and I try to be sure I'm educated on the subject before I post but the main intent is to learn. In the short time I've been here, I've learned a lot from both sides of the house. It's even affected my build (for the better I hope). I say it ain't broke. There's nothing to fix.

Well, after all, I AM "Jkustom", so that tells you which side of the fence I was born on.. But I like hot rods too, and Im juuuust about ready to start putting my roadster together finally..

I like Customs, I like hotrods too.

If there was a dedicated Custom section, It wouldn't be any different than surfing the main board now, as interesting topics still catch your eye.

It would take longer to check everything out though, I think.

I like having it all in one spot.

    Its 2012. Fuck segregation.

NO!!!!!!!!!!! The HAMB is just fine as it is, I'm more of a Hot Rod guy, but looking at a fine Custom from the 1950's now and then is fine with me. If you want to see a failure of split Forums, a heading of everything check out the AACA web site. Spliting up the masses into seperate groups is just wrong, IMO Bob

^^^^^ What The37Kid said - life's too short to spend chasing around different forums, and hot rods and customs go together like fish and chips ;).

Take a look at the XL (Sportster) forum if you want a laugh.

  18. Customs are a part of our culture for sure, love em all, but the HAMB has seen enough changes over the years.

Growing pains are normal, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Keep it the way it is. I enjoy learning about kustom stuff just as much as hot rod stuff. Each side has something to offer each other.

Personally, I see no benefits in separating them. It isn't like there is any problem right now with the present system and it is nice to see threads on hot rods and customs on the main board. I like looking at both kinds of cars.

Leave the board the way it is.
You should not have to do the leg work for someone that is to lazy to figure this place out on thier own.

To me it's in the grey areas between clear classifications that the magic of the HAMB happens. There is such a wealth of stuff on here that fits into neither the custom nor hot rod category, yet fits in better here than anywhere else on the 'net.

One of my favourite threads, for instance, is the Cyclecar thread, which is going on for 3200 posts. This is on the fringes of "topic", but such a thread wouldn't get this kind of support on a dedicated cyclecar website, much less on a general Vintage/classic site. It definitely requires a hot-rodder's mind-set, but it defies classification.

I see a lot of stuff getting directed to Dogfight, and rightly to my mind. Perhaps some way of making the HAMB and Dogfight mutually better accessible might stop Dogfight from being relatively neglected? I know, how hard can it be to bookmark a page? but, off the top of my head, how about the option to include Dogfight, Ford Barn, etc. in searches? Or listing one's DF subscriptions among one's HAMB subscriptions, and vice versa? Or even integrating memberships completely? Just some ideas.

Likewise, there is a lot of strictly Ford Barn stuff on the HAMB: it is very hard to draw the line. I'm not complaining, by any means, but one wonders if the Ford Barn is redundant if the greater part of its content is duplicated on the HAMB. Perhaps make content movable from one to the other? I can see that making a lot of work for the moderators, though, because people are going to start posting stuff in any old place and leaving it to the mods to "file" it.

This isn't quite what you were asking; I hope it's nevertheless of use.

I have a custom but also love hot rods. I agree that the cross coverage is a good way to learn so leave the board the way it is.

With a 95% hot rod crowd it is pretty interesting that 20% of the votes want a custom section. :D

Seriously, the problem with separate sections will be all the crossover posts with tech and other similar stuff. And of course, so many things are stuck together with hot rods and kustoms. But there are certain differences. If we were a few hundred people on here, this discussion would be totally unnecessary. With 175 000 members, it might be a different story.

But as a dedicated traditional kustom guy AND a dedicated traditional hot rod guy, I am not sure if the mixed thing is especially good for us who love traditional kustoms. The kustom posts dissappear among the huge amount of other posts.

To hear the hot rod fans say it is good as it is, really has no value for this type of question. It would be more interesting to hear what the POSTERS of traditional kustom threads think. The people that make all the effort to build, promote or/and teach us all about traditional kustoms and their history through their posts.

What do they think? They are the ones that should be encouraged to post more and get others to do so. It's their thoughts that should be heard through the hot rod snowstorm.

I am on other boards and there are no problems checking a couple of more sections instead of one.

Maybe one section for hot rods, one for kustoms, one for tech and one for bullshit/OT.

Just to get the O/T stuff off the "real" board would be a big improvement. The posting is so heavy on the HAMB nowadays, so a new post ends up 10 pages back in 24 hrs.

To have the O/T off and to be better to mark the posts with the prefix would maybe the best first step?

The mentioned Cyclecar thread is very cool and interesting. Still I think it is a non hot rod/kustom topic. Good O/T material and definately something that grabs this crowds interest. But traditional American hot rod or kustom? Nope...

These are just my thoughts as a traditional kustom lover... :)

maybe this is too obvious and I'm missing the point, but couldn't the threads have the word Custom (or Kustom)in the title and those who only want to see them use the search option?
i use it to search for ideas relating to specific topics all the time.

I'm 'ol school and love traditional hot rods and vintage drag cars. Though I can see value to having a separate forum for Hot Rods and one for Customs I like the H.A.M.B. the way it is now. But regardless of whatever change may come JalopyJournal.com will be remain as my first stop during my daily visit to Planet Internet.

Would it be possible to have three sections?

One for Hot Rods, one for Customs. . . then a third section where both posts wind up for those people who like it just the way it is?

So we'd have the HAMB as usual, but folks would also have the option to only see the posts tagged "Hot Rod" or "Custom".

Not sure if I'm making sense here.
