Looking at my 325 dodge hemi and wondering if it is feasible to use the capped off water ports at the rear of.the head to supply and return water to the heater..i don t know the water path in hemi s..but it would.seem like.using both for.heat might cause issues???or am i wrong due.to.lack.of knowledge with hemi.s??? I think the water flow is Bottom of radiator Water pump Block Heads Top of radiator. So you could use one side at the rear of the head but the return would have to go to T into the front of the engine someplace that feeds the top rad hose.
I've stared at those plates too. I think that the pressure will be the same on both sides. If a guy could find a small 12v circulator pump that would push the water through the heater. I'd bet you could use the same plate for the in and out.
using one of the block-off plates will work for the IN connection to the heater; the RETURN line from the heater should enter into the water pump in the same area as the bottom or cooler side of the radiator via a barbed hose fitting. (Assuming there's a port for it) This RETURN should be before the t-stat. This will allow quicker & warmer flow regardless of whether the t-stat is open/closed. An inline shut-off valve on the IN hose or connection would be req'd to turn off the flow when not needed. If both are at the block-off plates...there'd be no flow, except for using an auxiliary pump, but why go to all that trouble?
I kinda figured it would be even pressure...i asked be ause when i built the firewall bracing the passengers side rear head port is really vonna be close to the firewall..where as tbe driver s side bead sits further forward so i ll have plenty of room for the supply on that side...i ve planed to make my own water crossover pipe for between the heads in front..with a provision for the upper rad.hose.to tie.into it...maybe this would.be a good place to add a******* for.the heater.return hose.... On another note..the crossover hose between the heads up.front...i don t care for.the.looks of.the.system hot heads sells...thinking of making plates for.the.heads and tapping them.for npt fitting...but it seems to me that the small.diameter of the cross hose would be stifling to the water flow from the radiator ...ideas??? Just tryin to ensure that the hemi runs.evenly cool.on both sides of the motor...maybe run a pair of hoses from rhe radiator to the motor?? Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Hot water out of head into heater core - that's one hose Out of heater core to suction side of water pump - that's the second hose. You CAN use both heads with a T for the inlet but you can't use one head for inlet and one head for outlet. How did the factory do it ? You could run a hard line under engine back up to rear head area for a heater hose connection.
Supposedly, a stock cross-over from a 392 will work on a 331, not sure about the Dodge 325 or if it even has the same port locations. I've been looking for one for some time. Thought I had one located; still working on it. Alternatively, I'm about ready to make my own if I can't find the 392 x-over. I bought some 90º & 45º 1-1/4 pipe "weld-els" from McMaster-Carr. They have very tight radii and are 1.66" nominal pipe diameter with ~ 1.27 ID....see McM page 75. Some boss plates would have to be made with the appropriate bolt holes and water passage holes. This all will take some time to make. The RT head sits 7/8" behind the LEFT head on the 331, so that will have to be compensated for in some manner. A piece of pipe or pipe-sized DOM would tie them together and a larger stem tee'd in at the middle to make the t-stat housing
The size physically was the reason i went with the dodve hemi...i.started will a nice re buildable 354 jemi..good crank and choice of M/T or Veniola pistons that came with it...19nos between the 2 brands.. And your right about the possibility od needin a heater in a hot rod around here....took only one summer before i hooked up the heater in my old.vega wagon hot rod....many a night where ya at least needed defroster to see where ya was going.... Why not just move ? Then you won't need a heater. Sorry man lol With that crazy water pump , you might have to run your second line from the heater core directly to the upper tank of the radiator.
Trust me i ve thought about movin out of michigan several times..... The water pump is a one off Lil John B (buetera??) that i picked up years ago from.a friend who s dad was friends with John....they never ran it and it was a gift from his son to me when i built.the.vega 15 years ago....kept the blown 400 in the wagon cool...figure it ll keep the hemi cool...i was figuring on running the heater return line back up.and into the feed from the radiator into the head crossover tube???guess i ve got a bit before i have to worry about it...i just needed ro make sure that using borh rear head ports wasn t feasible..if so i was going to have to.move.a section of the firewall bracing to clear the*******..not an issue now Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Co-incidentally I was just thinking about a heater for the hemi. Routing out of the back of the left-hand side head, then into the water pump (Chevy) The two outlets at the front of the heads will go directly to the top of the radiator. They have t'stats in the hoses with bypass holes...(below)
great way to accomplish the task. where did you find those in-line t-stats ? what will you be using for a fill neck on the radiator? For the heater lines on the 331, I plan on coming off the left-hand rear block-off plate as well....need to make a boss yet. For the return, the BB Chevy WP has a 1/2NPT port. Also, I drilled/tapped the intake manifold for 1/2NPT where the head has a hole but there wasn't a crossover in this manifold (Industrial). This is where the temp sensing bulb will go. The plastic jar is just to protect the dash gauge.
That looks good, sounds like we're on the same page? I found the T'stats here on the Ford Barn from memory...if it helps here's the card which came in the box with them... The filler will be at the radiator cap as per normal but it's moved to under the hood...not in the stock location on the deuce grille shell (pretty common practice nowadays)....see below....I might put a brake-bleeder somewhere along the cyl head to purge any trapped air...still undecided.
Just a couple of miles north of 12 and 127. I tried living in the city once and it drove me nuts. I grew up on a farm so I had a hard time in town. Now my brother lives down in waterford ad is fine with it. I have needed a droster in June many times. LOL
