What could be causing this? Do I have to replace the generator? Any information would help a lot.

Always check the cheapest thing first, in this case check the belt for proper tension and condition.

 

is there any output from the generator?

 

Then have the voltage regular and generator checked out by someone who knows older electrical systems.

 

Quick check, start the car, with car running disconnect battery, if car staying running, the Generator is putting out. If car dies...either generator or voltage regulator is shot...

The light means the charging system is not working. There are several things that can cause this. If you want to diagnose it yourself, get a Motors manual of of Ebay that covers your year falcon. Read it and do the tests as they say. Then you can figure out what is wrong, replace the bad parts and then polarize it yourself. It's not rocket science. Probably the voltage regulator or the generator. Get a shop manual for it if you can.
