Just think the Boss' recent blog post and subsequent comments belong here. So here . . . http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=732705
Looks like the price of gas was 21 cents/gal and a quart of oil was more. Using the CPI calculator, 21 cents in 1948 has the same buying power as $2.01 today. Wish gas was $2.01 per gallon.
And it looks like the '40s. What is remarkable is that nearly 30 years later the price of gas wasn't much higher. I remember 29.9 cents for regular and 31.9 for hi-test (ethyl) as late as 1972.
I used to commute through that tunnel 5 days a week going from Granada Hills to UCLA. It was great when the freeway finally opened.
ditto I still drive through that tunnel almost daily. It's solidly bumper-to-bumper EVERY morning; which is why we're (Metro) adding an HOV lane to the adjacent I-405 freeway to the east but its pretty amazing that its still there and still functional.
That is a cool photo. Terribly unsafe IF that's a public thoroughfare like it appears to be but cool to see nonetheless.
Unsafe ? DBAP Really dude there used to be people that had fun and lived a little. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
My dad was in the Road Rebels in the late 30's (Los Angelos) His 34 Ford and his 32 Ford His 34 at Muroc Dry Lake (now Edwards AFB) Tim

I don't know if this was posted or not but it is pretty neat. I keep looking to see me walking down the Blvd. from the movie show. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=7LpPKAhW9-s&vq=medium Movie says 1953 but the Street Cars were remove in about 1956. So I would say later than that.
There is a thread here on the H.A.M.Buger about this video but I never get tried of looking at it but I was just watching it right now and at 3:37 there's a blue and white T-Bird making a turn in front of whomever is filming and it seems to me that there is no one inside the T-Bird Maybe one of you guys can watch and see what you see.
You can see the driver against the background of the light colored car behind, as they wait for the light to change.
