The Plymouth definitely has a soul. It's been on most of lifes big adventures with me as a faithful sidekick to what ever crazy crap I ask it to do, and come out stronger. It's been a somewhat comfortable bed some nights when a hotel room wasn't available 2000 miles away from home, and three times it's given it's all to protect me when someone else has done something stupid near us. Like a gental old horse it's compliantly put up with a beloved girlfriends amature handling when her car broke while I was out of town. I don't have anything in my life that I can trust as much as it. If all that doesn't count as having a soul, I'm not entirely sure what would.

Well personally i dont believe in souls but i do believe in energy that some could call a soul. My galaxie tends to act up whenever i have a girl in the car, almost like my car is jealous.

But you never know, we could have such a tight bond with our cars we may be reading into it too much.

I have a soul, and you can bet that when I kick the bucket, I'm still gonna be lurkin' around my cars, making sure nobody does anything stupid.

  11. Don't know if they have a soul or not, but I've always talked to my old cars when I'm driving them and occasionally give them a pat on the dashboard when they've made me proud.

How can you be an old car guy and not have an attachment to them that rivals your attachments to things like your dog, for instance.

I believe there is something there and it just might be a soul.

Years ago I had an old Chevrolet Station wagon I used for a tow car and each time I had the miles adjusted on the car it ran better.

My friend and I used to joke about it because the car had about 250 thousand miles on it but each time my friend adjusted the miles the car appeared to like having less miles on it and it always ran better.

    Strange but true story.

  13. Word !

Tell this to clergy and they will lay hands on you- if that doesn't help they may plan a special exercise for you.

Tell a shrink about your cars soul and they will give you head pills, if that doesn't work they will lock your ass up in a looney bin.

Cool thread. I say yes, though not in the dictionary sense. It depends on how someone interprets the term.

  16. Maybe not so much soul as character......different vehicles definately have different characters, and can seem quite human in a way. Some will cocoon you and take you wherever you want to go for years, and others will test your diagnostic skills on a weekly basis.......infact So Cal...your truck is positively telepathic....it's telling me that if it has to go, it wants overseas travel, and wants to come live in NZ.....:)

Yep, no they certainly do have a personality as well as a soul, we are blessed with Mertle's presents she has done us and is still doing us real proud with ever trip we take, every trip is a jurney and all the other cars we travel with have you know good supension shiny paint disc brakes and up to date engins but Murtle is just as we found her in the farmers machinery yard only with new tires, brakes and reco'd suspenders oh and you know the usual plugs points filters ans so on.

Look she is a 49-50 L133 Inter so she is 62 or 63 years young still running the Silver diamond 220 six and just the other day she could not of done me any prouder when we all got stuck behind a clan of those bicycle road racers you know the ones that take up all the road and give you the shits, well when I was given the oppertunity to pass I give her a boot full and half of it came out the rear leaving the treadleys in a cloud sorry but we all thaught it was quite fitting, laugh we almost shat.

So clearly Myrtle also has an opinion on cyclists.

  18. I've had several instances of odd coincidences with my cars.

I had a guy back into my '57 Plymouth's door and mash it in. He took off but I found the guy and long story short he had to pay for the damage. During the following week I had to get an estimate and have the other guys insurance guys come take a look at my car. The dent ended up giving me a nice check. After the insurance guys left I went to get a bite to eat with a friend. When we got back to the house I noticed that the dent was gone. There was a small scuff and the trim was a bit dinged but the huge dent had popped out. That check ended up paying for the supplies to paint my car. Can you say Christine? Haha

My '57 did not like girls...

One time I was on my way to pick a girl up for a date and as I pulled out of the gas station I heard a loud clang and my car started vibrating badly. I pulled over and noticed something behind me in the road. One of the fan blades had broken off and gone straight down...in between the radiator hose and the tranmission cooling lines in a 4 inch gap...instead of through the hood, fender, or anything else. Of course I had take the fan off then to stop at my house and swap fans.

Another instance I tried to start the car to go to a dance and she wouldn't even spin over. I had to take the starter loose and knock it with a hammer...never had that problem again.

Another girl got her finger slammed in the door as she tried exiting the car...there was no wind or anything..but somehow the door had enough force to smash her finger flat.

Needless to say I never got anywhere with those girls...and I still have the car. I've put over 80,000 miles on the car and the only real issues was when a girl was around...Was my car jealous? Strange coincidence? Probably just coincidence right? But its still nice to imagine my Plymouth has a mind of her own...

If cars and trucks have a soul then what about spray guns, toasters, or leaf blowers? :D:rolleyes:

  21. I've had a few of those give me crap over the years. Maybe so!

  22. ..My '57 did not like girls...

First souls now a sexual preference too.
I suppose I could be introduced to a law suite if I were to say that this 1957 automobile was a
Fag and your girls could also file suite for sexual discrimination.

  23. Everybody's going to have a different view of whether cars have a "soul" or not, but there's certainly something there that connects with us rodders. And I'm not so sure that it doesn't come from us rather than the other way around - I know a lot of people who can't get anything mechanical to work right for them, and I've had instances when it seems mechanical devices just revealed what's wrong with them in some subtle way, and worked fine after some attention. A little time spent in careful examination and thought as to how something is supposed to work and getting it back to that point seems to me a good education in physics, mechanics, etc. that seems to be so sadly lacking in today"s "throwaway" society.

your truck doesn't have a soul, it has a short.

  27. My 15mm socket has this uncanny ability to hide from me. It must have something against me.

My glasses hide too, they think its funny because I can't see them. I get very angry when they laugh at me like that !!

My coffee cups are always having a meeting on the bench. They all walk overthere and hang out together , I think they do it just to pass the time. But they have yelled at my glasses for laughing.

One time at this bar, a chair jumped right in front me. There I was minding my own business and a chair wants to pick a fight. I showed it who's boss though, I sat on it and farted! Oh wait- maybe that happened before and thats why it jumped in front of me to pick a fight.

This one time, at band camp .....

  28. Don't know for certain whether a vehicle has a soul or presence or whatever but there is definitely SOMETHING there. Here is my tale and you may judge for yourself.Be aware that it a bit long so feel free to skip this post.My affair with my 1955 Pontiac Safari actually started when I had just turned 11 years old. The local Pontiac dealer had just received a brand new turquoise and ivory Safari and it was displayed in their showroom. I must have stared at that car for a week until one day it was gone! Sold to some lucky individual. Many years later a good friend of mine had one(bronze and ivory)in his used car lot.An Arizona car with factory a/c it was in beautiful shape but the asking price($3000) was a bit much for me as I had just purchased a 68 Chevelle for one tenth of that.It eventually disappeared off the lot.Fast forward to 1994. I had just been re-married and moved to Southeast Michigan and was looking for a new vehicle. Scanning the local trade paper I came across the ad for the Safari. Upon calling about it Ilearned that the owner had originally placed the ad some two years prior and had no responses. He was considering re-listing it when I had called. Was the car waiting for me to call? Who knows? This past summer I had an inner wheel bearing go bad.I had stockpiled a few as they are hard to come by and I went crazy trying to find them hidden somewhere in my shop. As I had the car up on stands I decided to do as much work as I could while waiting to get a new bearing.I hadn't greased the chassis in awhile(with 22 fittings it isn't the easiest)so I decided to do that.I swung the left front wheel to get access to the fittings and heard a strange thunk and the assembly move upward. Upon inspecting why I found the lower control bolts(ALL of them!)had loosened up.The front ones took nearly a full turn and the rears had loosened to the extent that there was nearly a quarter inch gap between the arm and the crossmember!Strangely there had been no noise from the front end or any indication that anything was amiss. So what was it exactly that caused me to find this potential disaster in the making? In the nearly twenty years I've owned the car I have had many things happen to it that have caused a temporary halt to operation but it has always given me ample warning. It has only ridden on a flatbed once and that was due to a ballast resistor failure.I carry a spare now.So as the original poster asked as to whether a car or truck has a soul:draw your own conclusions. There is DEFINITELY something there.

I don't know. Perhaps you should see what the Midi-chlorian count in her motor oil is.

    Yes, they definitely do.
My 64 Galaxie convert loves me driving it, and I love driving it. We now know each other and it just cruises along the road.
I know it sounds kinda weird and freaky, but I just enjoy driving it.
