  2. wow, what a giant rv, think you must have had a Lincoln at minimum to haul this thing! would be nice to see that one in person, anybody know about a surviving one of these?

    NO,---NOT near Inglewood---Probably over the Santa Monica mtns.
    During WWII, I lived 1 mile from NAA where P-51 Mustangs & B-25 Mitchells were built & tested.

    That would be an A-36 Apache, the 'Dive bomber' variant of the first Mustangs. The main difference was the main-plane (Wings), To incorporate the dive breaks that were in the center of the main-plane a complete re-design was necessary.
    North American Aviation took this as a chance to 'Beef up' the main-plane to include two bomb racks and four .50in (50Cal)M2 Browning Machine Guns. It also had to incorporate the pre-mentioned and quite unique hydraulically operated cast Aluminium dive brakes.
    Although known as a 'Dive Bomber' the aircraft was in fact envisioned as a low level Attack Aircraft. This resulted in top power and performance being produced below 12,000ft with the use of the 'Sea level rated' Allison V-1710-87 with 1,352hp (988 kW) at 3,000 ft.
    Although the aircraft now is considered a poor performing version of the Mustang it acquired a reputation of sturdiness and precision in bombing. The Germans being on the receiving end of the aircraft dubbed it the "screaming helldivers".
